I'm glad you guys enjoyed this show. I'm loving your guys' reviews!

That, and it's like playing with a house cat in the morning then in the afternoon seeing it standing over the mailman with their throat torn out. River is not a house cat, River is a lion. It recontextualizes everything you've said and done and the unrealized danger in it all is terrifying. As you say, is it all a game to her? Does the lion know 100% where the line is when you play fight over a ball? or an apple?

At the beginning of the episode, Kalee chased River through the ship to recover an apple, and declared in triumph that nothing in the 'verse could stop her. At the end of the episode, after River shot the 3 men without looking, she smiled at Kaylee and repeated the same line. I think one of the reasons why Kaylee was freaked out was that, not only did River perform a seemingly impossible feat, but after doing so (and killing 3 men in the process), she acted like it was just another game.

There's no question that one of the reasons Joss Whedon was asked to direct the first Avengers movie was that he proved with Firefly that he could juggle a large team of characters and make you care about each of them, and he proved with "Serenity" that he could handle a major motion picture featuring many expensive visual effects. Also, he wrote a successful series of X-Men comics in the early 2000's, so it was known that he understood and had experience with comic book superheroes.

Just a thought about the Councilor with Anara and maybe not so meaningless if you want to look for deep meaning in things. They all show "the real me". When I watched this it is what I got out of this episode (truth be told when talking with a friend about it during watching it on their first watch and my second they came up with most , I only wish I had seen all these things.) Mal = is brutal when he needs to be. Jane = is honorable and does go on the rescue. Zoe = Wash is more important to her and willing to give up even her past for him. Wash = is a badass at heart. Book = is ....well.... is more than a preacher. Simon = brave but not a fighter. Anara = hides true feelings. Kaley = not brave a good soul but not brave. And River = has hidden power.

I've seen plenty of shows that had a great first season, then suck royally in the second. At least that didn't happen with Firefly. We should all appreciate what there is, it is 1000% better than anything being made these days.

There’s so much content in each episode it’s impossible to catch everything on your first watch. To me the “real me” reveals through torture were about Walsh mostly, and then Zoe and finally River. Even though Mal was the one visually tortured the most, we didn’t learn anything new about the real him. Walsh was physically tortured and revealed the real him, as capable of heroic acts as much as the rest of the crew. Zoe was emotionally tortured and revealed that, despite her extremely strong bond with Mal, she is devoted to her husband above all else. River is constantly suffering the consequence of what the Alliance did to her and it’s psychological torture, she revealed part of her true self to Kaylee. That she is stronger than what you might assume. I agree the counselor/Inara plot was the weakest part, although they referenced, when they were collecting the money to rescue Mal and Walsh that Inara asked unsuccessfully for her intervention.

Another good episode. I can see you share the pain of all Firefly fans as to this show being so short-lived. I don[t know why I never put this together before, but both Nathan Fillion, William Shatner, and Lorne Greene are all Canadian. I guess Canadians make the best spaceship captains? Maybe it's a prerequisite.
