UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - By Any Other Name S2E22

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard Another 2 ball or maybe a 10 ball if there is a stripe. Kirk 7 Chekov 2 Bones 1 Spock 1 Extra: Kissin' yep. So much kissin' but not a lot of BANGIN in TOS.

I do think this is quite a good episode despite some flaws. I appreciate the ending being very much in the spirit of Star Trek, having the Kelvans realize they need not be conquerors after seeing things from the human side, and Spock pointing out that they need not be bound by orders given generations ago. For all we know, this group didn't even understand their own origins. Perhaps the kelvans aren't the warmongers they believe them to be. I don't think they're related, but the race that created Mudd's androids were also from Andromeda. The biggest issue I had was that they brushed over the murder of one of the crew. The more comedic second half would have worked much better if Rojan had only threatened to kill the neutralized crew. Held them hostage to keep Kirk in line. It was pretty fun seeing them try to corrupt the kelvans. Scotty's scene in particular is pretty hilarious, but Kirk completely defeated attitude at how little effect his charm was having on Kalinda is great as well. One thing that I have questions about is the modifications to the Enterprise. Is it now just permanently dozens of times faster than it was? Anyway, it's a good fun episode. Definitely in the upper half for this season.

Agreed

I think the rest of the episode could have worked if they hadn't killed one of the crew

Its in the top third for me. Full of classic Trek themes, including Kirk speechifying and a WTF? ending. Its also the Viewmaster episode, Roddenberry made sure to have them visit the set that week since he wrote the episode. The script was one of the three finalists for the second pilot. Mudd's Women being the other one that wasn't chosen.

You were spot on about the tone. That came from having two writers. The original script focused heavily on the aliens to the point the cast didn’t have much to do so Dorothy Fontana (who did Amok Time and Journey to Babel) wrote additional scenes for the cast, especially Scotty’s drinking contest. I liked the callback to the barrier from the second pilot which also introduced the chess board.

A decent episode. My 2 big complaints about it is 1) these people reduced Kirk's entire crew to styrofoam sponges, and then destroyed the female officer. How do you forget or forgive that? 2) Having it turn to more comedy with the Kelvans towards the end (getting drunk, becoming irritable, corny seduction, Spock and McCoy tossing Kirk back into the fight) just decreases the seriousness of the situation and deflates the enormous jeopardy the Enterprise crew is in.

I like this episode. Oddly enough it was the episode which first told me that Scotty was actually supposed to be Scottish (based on the stereotypical things in his quarters). I thought a Scot named Scott and nicknamed Scotty was just way too on the nose! His accent is so weird that me, a native Scottish person, didn't even recognise it! Don't know what I thought he was but definitley didn't think it was supposed to sound like my own accent! I thought it was so cool to have a Scottish character though, even if he's a walking stereotype and the accent is bizarre 😂

Next up I believe is "The Omega Glory". A lot of people don't like this episode. It's a top five for me. Watch with an open mind.

Your comparison to a stage play when characters just walk a meter away and then can't hear eachother anymore is actually not that far off. TV at this time was very much still trying to be the modern theater. It was mimicking stageplay a lot. Actors were trained for on stage and a lot of good actors still considered that their main gig and TV was still kind of looked down upon. A lot of set designers and all kinds of people, including writers were used to working for the stage. So it looks a lot like a stageplay and is written and acted like it. That's no coincidence. Only with time TV started to be its own thing and really explore what the medium can do. We saw the same thing in games pretty much. Remember in the 90s when games were in CD and had elaborate full motion video with real actors in some games? That was games trying to imitate movies and TV. Many games called themselves "interactive movie", it was an entire genre. Only later did games start to fully explore the interactive nature of storytelling and become its own medium. That kind of transition from imitating classic media to becoming its own and really taking advantage of what the new medium can do is very common.

Another one of my favorites. I think when you first started this series you mentioned Scotty and a drinking contest. Now ya know. "It's....It is green!"

Yes, the actor playing Hanar was in The Naked Time. He was the guy who killed himself with a butter knife. To quote Rodney Dangerfield, "I could tell it wasn't a professional job. The knife had butter on it". To go even more old school, Tamar was channeling Buster Keaton with his expressions during the drinking scene. Kirk was pretty quick to forgive Rojan for murdering Lee J. Cobb's daughter. That was a shock first seeing it as a kid, you'd assume it was the guy who was crushed. I'm enjoying your videos, its good to see thoughtful reactions instead of people who just seem to be there to mug for the camera.

This episode features my favorite ending shot. The music combined with Enterprise changing course for home always got me. Believe it or not, the original version is even better.

It's fun but not the best. Scotty outdrinking this guy is his best scene. Next I'd go with the bar fight, then when he refuses to lower the shields no matter what the popinjay Fox says, and then "I've got to have 30 minutes!" I love Scotty, and its because the actor is so old fashioned interesting compared to modern actors. He and Bones just blow all the future ST actors out of the water.

And Nurse Chapel's first name is Christine.

You point out the one thing that improves in the third season over the first two - many female aliens with some very provocative outfits.

Thanks so much, this is one of my favorite episodes and a loved your reaction! Also, thank you for giving me a visual for the Kelvins true form, Arrival and Galaxy Quest are perfect images. The drinking scenes with Scotty have always been a favorite of the series for me, they both gave such great performances!

This episide not only had an actor from one of the initial 1st season episodes (Naked Time) but the barrier at the edge of the galaxy they passed through is the same as the 2nd pilot episode Where No Man has Gone Before where Kirk's friend Gary Mitchell and the blonde Dr. Daynar had their eyes shifted to glowing silver as their E.S.P. levels were high and became God like beings. Spock had the same lines about all the negative readings the sensors gave but unlike that first episode wasn't shouting it. The actor who played Ro-Jann you may recognize from your Patreon watch along reaction to Forbidden Planet as he stood alongside the Captain played by Leslie Nielsen but he wore a hat for many of his scenes. I may be wrong about this but I believe for the remastered version they made the guy who Bones injected with stimulants look extremely pale and anemic at first and later his colour tone became normal, presumably after eating solid foods as McCoy insisted. I think the casting especially for Ro-Jann was a bit off as his performance seemed to drag instead of making you feel these were aliens in disguise. I also believe as stated the pacing and knowledge of the Kelvans was limited. We only saw them in human form, a still or video of them as they naturally are could've helped promote it better but would've been too costly an effort. We also only saw the devices on their belts as well as the metal material they use but nothing to actually show any sort of technological superiority other than them stating as much. Some more background and even the woman at the helm would've expanded on exactly who they really are and all of this made us only care about the blonde woman and no one else. Also it's Nurse Chapel not Nurse Janis, I guess he misses Yeoman Janis Rand lol.

Brad Barter

You mentioned having heard of "the Kelvin timeline", but no, that's not a reference to these aliens. Just a reference to the particular incident where that timeline diverges from the original canon timeline. But more than that would be spoilers, of course. Also, the shape that the 'neutralized' crew members were turned into is called a cuboctahedron, and yeah, it's a cool shape.

Jeff Cornell

I thought they did a good job of making the Kelvans seem truly alien, despite having human form. They seemed just "off" enough to make the audience uncomfortable.

tyranusfan

One of my favorites just based on the costume design for the female aliens 👌
