UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E20 Return to Tomorrow

Comments

TOS Sex Scoreboard Almost but no Kirk 7 Chekov 2 Bones 1 Spock 1 Extra: No intertwining this ep. We almost got a horrifying situation. It was close to a Kirk - Dr. Pulaski rama-lama-ding-dong. Ironic is was an android-robot that she was going to get in that stopped it. Big question is, if Felacia had entered the android, lived a long time and since she would have been fully functional; I wonder who she would have hooked up with?

I know a lot of people aren't the biggest fans of this episode, but I always liked it. If nothing else, the "risk is our business" monologue does a great job at encapsulating what Star Trek is all about. The acting, particularly Shatner's, can be a little corny at times, but Nimoy really carried a lot of the episode playing the villain for a change. On that topic, you have to feel bad for Chapel here. She has this unrequited love for Spock, and the first thing Henoch does upon assuming control of Spock's body is compliment her. Even if it's not Spock, it must have been gratifying. Then the second thing he does is brainwash and manipulate her. I don't know if Twilight Zone or Outer Limits ever did a similar episode, but I know SG1 and later Trek series had their own "playing musical chairs with people's bodies" episodes. I agree with Josh on this one. There are stronger episodes, but it's still pretty good. The scale of Sargon and the others' lives over the eons, and the questions of immortality that brings, seeing the cast play different characters, Sargon and Thalassa getting one last romantic goodbye before oblivion. Lots of great stuff there. Also with the echo effect of the possessed bodies, it's funny that Alex's studio has an echo. Sounds like he was possessed as well😂

Bartell La Rue voiced the Guardian in "City." James Doohan did the honors in the excellent animated episode "Yesteryear,"

Mark Chrisco

"Have no fear, Sargon is here!" 😆

Brad Barter

Oh dear, thank you for the correction. I completely spaced. Bad Trekkie memory.

I always loved actress Diana Muldaur. You'll see her again.

tyranusfan

Yes. I instantly recognized the Kirk and Bone’s blooper scene.

BURKE Wells

I’m pretty sure “Destruction “ is from ST episode as well.

BURKE Wells

This episide is definitely where Shatner got his perceived reputation for dragging out his sentences during his close-up shots.

Brad Barter

Next weeks episode Patterns of Force will also tap into another historical conflict from the 20th Century, to say anything more than that would give too much of a spoiler about what the episode is about.

Brad Barter

We'll see Diana Muldaur again as a different character in season 3 of TOS with dark hair. I don't want to give away anything further than that but we will see her long before TNG season 2.

Brad Barter

The initial line in the song is by Bones taken from the episode I-Mudd, "it's worked so far but we're not out yet." Followed by the first real line of the song, "I want to know what you're thinking..."

Brad Barter

It is the next one that I was think was this week so Alex get ready for a new poster. This one is also a favorite - but next week is the one for the poster.

Ricky Johnson

The actor that plays Scotty (James Doohan) was the voice of Sargon. He was also the voice of the Guardian of Forever in “City on the Edge of Forever.”

Tom Occhipinti

One of my favorites! The acting was pretty impressive, at least for me, as it gave them a chance to flex a little. Shatner did well, and I loved Nimoy's acting too. And the lovely Diane Muldar. You'll see her again, much later, when we get to TNG. But this is one of my Top Ten.

Firekrys FWO

The "Risk" speech Kirk gives in the briefing room is one of the most common pieces of dialog referenced by Star Trek fans as neatly encapsulating what the Enterprise, its crew, and the show was all about.

Collin Freeman

I can’t help but notice the coincidence between your last Firefly episode and this one. Both Captains kiss a woman and then immediately collapse to the floor. FYI: in the 1980’s, there’s was a hit pop song from the band Information Society that samples Spock’s line “Pure Energy”. It’s called What’s On Your Mind (Pure Energy). Bones is also heard at the beginning before the music kicks in. Also, Kirk’s speech definitely iconic and pops up in documentaries.

BURKE Wells

I’m glad we agree

Josh (Target Audience)

I never liked this one as a kid because it all took place on the ship but I enjoy it more now.

Chas Summers

In last week's episode, there was a Vietnam war analogy, Kirk got poisoned, his friend's wife was almost raped and was then murdered. But sure, goofy fun.

Chas Summers

You are right, Ralph Senensky was given the more emotional episodes to direct. One of Shatner's best hammy performances, there are many more to come. This episode had a few good scenes in the second season blooper reel. Check it out.
