EXCLUSIVE Patreon Q&A - Whatever This Is Episode 2 EXTRA

Comments

A little bit. I think there were still some very good episodes with Winchester. Once Winchester and our guys become a bit more friendly and BJ grows a mustache there's still some good stuff there. But yes eventually it got a tiny bit too preachy and also some storylines got repeated. But there's still some good stuff there. I liked that they gave Klinger more of a role after Radar left and I think he developed into a great character.

Maybe after you're done with all three seasons you an do another one of these discussions and do the same thing Red Letter Media did with TNG, discuss your most favorite episodes and all the episode types etc for the whole show

In regards to future Star Trek shows, they actually not THAT far away. You probably haven't heard a lot about DS9 because TNG was sooo big, but DS9 is the best of all the shows for quite a number of people. DS9 and TNG ran in parallel during TNG's 6th and 7th season and it's absolutely worth watching them that way. They share some characters, some recurring Star Fleet admirals show up in both shows, some world events are being handled in both shows at the same time, so it's really worth it. They're meant to be seen together in that time and really expand on the ST universe together. DS9 is also the show that fleshes out its big cast really well. It probably has the biggest regular cast of all the shows and absolutely every single character gets its own stories and gets fleshed out, so I think you'll really enjoy that one as well. You have a lot to look forward to :)

Just wanted to say: You pronounced my name pretty much perfectly. Slight American accent obviously but other than that you got it absolutely right, so don't worry about it :) Josh actually pretty much nailed it :)

Additionally, at least two actors from The Next Generation also appear in that fan-made series: John de Lancie and Denise Crosby.

Rhett Coates

Have you guys ever seen the movie "Dark City"? It's film noir and sci-fi, I loved it. "Scott Pilgrim" is also one of the best films I've seen.

About "Star Trek: The Animated Series" - I know some commenters have said "it's not canon", but even if it isn't, it still introduces ideas that show up in later series. Plus it is the original cast - including some guest characters from The Original Series. And even though it's a cartoon, it's NOT made for kids. In fact, Gene Roddenberry hoped it would be broadcast in prime time. There had been previous animated series that were originally shown in prime time: "The Flintstones", "The Jetsons", and "Johnny Quest". So, even if you decide not to do reaction videos for it, you should still watch it, anyway. Personally, I think you'll be missing out if you don't. You may be surprised at the quality of some of the episodes! Also: it's only half an hour!

I actually thought seasons 4 and 5 were the best, then it went downhill after Frank leaves.

Collin Freeman

Red Letter Media, because they went to film school and whatnot, have taught me a LOT about movie and television production, stuff I didn't pay attention to before. Long-time fan.

Lin Phillips

MASH is a phenomenal and hilarious show. Until Trapper John leaves.

Chas Summers

Correct but the movie was based on a real account of doctors serving in Korea. I got all seasons and the movie right here haha :)

Andreas Schmitt

TV series was based off of Robert Altman 1970 movie starring Donald Sutherland, Robert Duvall, Elliott Gould, Tom Skerritt (Alien), Sally Kellerman (TOS:Where No Man Has Gone Before) and many others. The movie was a Dramedy.

Regarding what M*A*S*H is, I think a bunch of other people have explained it a bit already, but it's basically an 11 season show that started out as a sitcom but progressed relatively quickly into a more drama based show, still with humor, but more serious. It's about doctors at a Korean War mobile army surgical hospital (hence MASH), which is a medical unit directly behind the front. It's based on stories from a bunch of doctors actually working at such places. It explores the nature of war, and it was aired during the vietnam war. It was one of the most successful shows ever. (hence 11 seasons).

Maybe you can make Star Trek continues a Patreon only thing. It's not that many episodes, but it's worth watching. It ties in well with the first movie and even places a few hints at TNG (without spoiling anything). James Doohan's son reprises his dad's role as Scotty in it, so it has some high caliber stuff going on there, including the return of a lot of episode guest stars from TOS reprising their old roles. It's a really fun show. I get that it's breaking with release order so maybe watch it on Patreon as a special :)

I can understand some of your reactions to "smart classical movies". I'm struggling often with classical literature. Frankenstein is such a classic but damn is that book boring and long winded. Moby Dick is awesome in the way it is written, full of so much poetry, but that also makes it really hard to get through.

Andreas Schmitt

Fun fact : Close Encounters of The Third Kind and Lost both have TOS and TNG connections. You’ll have to wait until we get there to find out what they are but TOS and Close Encounters will happen before season 3.

BURKE Wells

I read the John Campbell novella "Who Goes There" which is the story from which The Thing came from (1938 I think) and you can just visualize what he described in the story if you've seen the movie. Carpenter did a great job of remaining faithful and yet adapting that sci fi story. Great story and great film.

Collin Freeman

Mr. Plinkett started with TNG movies and was begged by the Trek fans to do The Phantom Menace when he finished with the last TNG film.

I was thinking about the length of TOS and I fully understand you guys being uncomfortable. Of course you have to remember that other than ads for their sponsors and station identification, commercials breaks were there to give you a couple minutes to go to the bathroom, grab a drink, let out the dog to do its business etc. And because of doing uncut reactions you unfortunately don't have the much needed break that would normally be there. Plus for years stations as well as after its initial release had cut the episodes down and even though I had seen the episodes several times it wasn't until they were remastered and released in their full original format that I saw scenes in almost every episode for the first time. So the run time you see now is about 3 to 5 minutes longer than we saw it in the 80s and 90s and I was excited to see scenes I never saw before.
