UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek The Original Series - S2E2 Who Mourns for Adonais?

TOS Sex Scoreboard Half naked man that looks like a... like a.........a...... well kind of like a Greek God. BUT no main crew scores. Kirk 4 Bones 1 Spock 1 Extra: we do give a hottie hook up to Lt Palamas new +1. The look on her face a few times tells us she took a ride to the top of Mt Olympus.

Yeah, I never was a fan of the "god entity" episodes, and this one is the most literal interpretation of the trope. Q is handled much better, and Trelane's race and the Organians were more sold as just very powerful aliens(his parents were actually pretty polite). Generally later in trek these near omnipotent aliens are recycled so there's not so many kicking around, and they rarely claim to actually be gods, which makes the stories far more compelling and tolerable. It is nice to see more of Chekov though. I love the scene where he says he's 22 and Kirk is like "yeah, I'll handle it. You're just gonna hit on her". As much as Kirk has a reputation as a womanizer, he generally knows there's a time and a place, except for one particular episode that bothered the hell out of me.

For anyone who cares, Michael Forrest guest stars in episode 1 of Star Trek Continues, reprising his role as (an aged) Apollo in "Pilgrim of Eternity". Now while STC is by no means canon, there are some great stories and it is pretty true to Gene's original vision. There are ties to the original series, and the cast and crew did a great job producing the 11 eps of this fan-made show, which also stars Chris Doohan (Jimmy's son) as Scotty.

You are correct. The intent was Carolyn was being "ravished" by Apollo during the storm. Apparently got past the network censors.

Got to love 1960s Star Trek. They could conceive of a future with no famine, money or war, ships which travel faster than light, aliens, transporters, mind melds, phasers and photon torpedoes ... but not of a future where women don't lose their jobs when they get married 🙄 ST was certainly progressive for its time in many ways but it still had a lot of sexist moments worthy of an eye roll. At least it was balanced out in this episode by Uhura getting to do something different!

Loved "In search of..."

This popularized the idea of ancient alien visitors - and many painful documentaries over the years. Some of them with Nimoy as the host - they were fun as a kid but very painful today....

Wow, Star Trek came up with the Ancient Alien theory way before "Ancient Aliens". I also find it funny that Spock is using a slide rule in this episode. I've seen him use one a few times in the series.

This episode is fine. Not great, but very watchable and well acted (except for Scotty). My hunch is Mirror Mirror will be deemed the most fun episode. Doomsday Machine is my favorite I think.

I agree that Michael Forrest and Leslie Parrish did excellent work in this episode, although I don’t think Carolyn Palomas has much of a personality. Bjo Trimble, the super-fan who created the Star Trek Concordance, opined that Palomas was the replacement for Marla McGiver, because she was “just as stupid.“ (Trimble disliked female characters who were immediately bowled over by charismatic men.). I thought that Forrest’s performance of that last speech was especially fine and moving. This episode also introduced some new musical themes, especially the muted trumpet call played while Apollo was describing the death of the gods. That musical theme will reappear during key moments in later episodes, especially during the third season. Something I never noticed before is that the rubble remaining after the Enterprise destroys the temple looks strongly like an actual Greek ruin, i.e. an archaeological site. That’s a very nice touch. Interesting note: in the novelized version of the story written by James Blish, it is revealed that Carolyn Palomas returned to the Enterprise pregnant. McCoy speculates on the obstetrical procedures for delivering baby gods. It goes without saying, the sexual politics of this episode would not survive five minutes in our era, and really shouldn’t have been tolerated in 1967 either (I mean, it’s pretty clear that Apollo was about to rape Carolyn (or actually was raping her) during that storm). Episodes 4 (“Mirror, Mirror“) & 6 (“The Doomsday Machine“) are especially good, and I think you will like them. As a piece of writing and acting, episode 6 is just about flawless. Episode 3 isn’t bad, but it’s stuff you’ve seen before.

Chekov was also added after the first season tried to be as inclusive of human races as possible but as Gene Roddenberry stated the Russians said, "oh the ugly Americans they've included everyone except anyone of the Soviet Union," so he was added to be even more inclusive. Also Majel Barrett said that they had hoped there would be peace with Russia in the future someday and they didn't want to make things worse or express any of the then current negative views of communist Russia in Gene's equal view of all mankind in his vision for Star Trek.

The Chekov character was introduced to tap into the Monkees and Beatlemania at the time. You'll notice his mop-top haircut as the season starts to resemble Davy Jones and then it goes away after a few episodes that were shot in the season.

This was one of my favorite episodes as a kid because those "cheesy" effects were amazing at the time. Today, well it gets you a pretty good laugh - but in the 70s this was stuff you saw in blockbuster films! Overall just a regular episode - there are two overly done themes in Star Trek (not just TOS) - weekly overzealous god or the out of control computer(remember Landru). Spoiler - I think we get fewer gods and more computers going forward.

Ricky Johnson

Leslie Parrish played Carolyn Palomas. Most beautiful female guest-star in the whole series, in my opinion. That Greek dress she wore was specially designed for her. No tape, pins, or hooks. She held it up by her body and sheer willpower.

Collin Freeman

I would say a lot of the fans agree with you Josh. There are far better episodes in this season that makes this slightly forgettable with the exception of the imagery of a Hulk hand holding the Enterprise and a giant Apollo. God-like aliens get phased out over time in the franchise or are significantly curtailed.
