The Haunting of Bly Manor E4+5 The Way It Came - The Altar of the Dead

Guys please watch Midnight Mass (also from Flanagan) after this!

The 5th episode is a metaphor for dementia and the horror of losing your memory. Flanagan is something of a king when it comes to metaphors.

What is it with Flanaghan and episode 5 of his shows? Episode 5 of Hill House was devastating ('The Bent Neck Lady') and I always end up crying for Hannah. The way the memories of Owen's interview shift each time is so very creepy and its so beautifully done!

At 3:40 when Trin says this actress is doomed to not have a nice marriage πŸ˜‚ I can't wait for her to meet Love Quinn someday. 🀐🀫

Unlike Hill House... this is the gothic horror genre. It's more romanticism mixed with mystery and psychological horror. A slower pace, a melancholic atmosphere... usually set at a remote castle or estate. Focusing on guilt, love, loss, and the past haunting the present. I love that it shows how we can be haunted in different ways... as we see that Dani is being haunted by guilt. What's done really well is the progression of the of Eddie sightings. Before meeting Jamie... he's only seen as a reflection to Dani. But the more she starts feeling for Jamie... the more 'Eddie' manifests fully, and closer. The night of the living room sleepover... Dani sees his bloody hand on her bed. Dani can't stop looking at Jamie after she returns from the funeral... then 'Eddie's behind her with his hands on her hips. Kissing Jamie... he's right there looming. But Dani took the big step of dealing with it (and facing her true feelings) by throwing her bone (his glasses) into the fire. The clues to what happened to Hannah are woven in so smartly. For example... in episode 3, when everyone gathered for the late night sleepover... they finally wake the kids to take them to their beds. Hannah is walking with Miles... and Miles says that he had a bad dream about having hurt Hannah. And in episode 4, when everyone is gathered for dinner... Flora consoles Owen about death. When she talks about maybe being dead and not knowing it... the camera is lingering on Hannah. The perspective in episode 5 is masterful... just so achingly confounding and compelling. The startling way it reveals what happened to Peter thru the view of a memory. Hannah is slipping in and out of memories. With that jumpy quality of dreams & dementia. She repeatedly returns to the memory of when she first met Owen. It's probably comforting. It's also her subconscious trying to get her to realize her DENIAL. (Just like 'Owen' screams to her.) To remember what happened... to remember that something is wrong. (The interview with Owen was a couple of years ago. If it was really just a flashback... then she couldn't know anything about Rebecca Jessel yet. That would be in the future. But this 'interview Hannah' remembers Rebecca. That's why her 'interview Owen' says that Rebecca is 2 years from now. 2 years after that interview. So how could she know that? Owen even says he's not really there. Meaning it's the Owen of her mind. Her subconscious is pushing at her to realize this is not the real moment, nor just the replaying of a happy memory.) There's nothing more heart wrenching than Hannah desperately repeating her name and other current info to hold onto herself. Ghost Hannah trying to ground herself to the present is such a clear parallel to the dementia that Owen spoke of with his mother. RIP Hannah. Wild that she died just moments before Dani arrived. F-ing Peter!

Such heavy episodes πŸ˜ͺ compared to last weeks. RIP Hannah Grose!

These two are the best episodes of the series, I think.

2 of my favorite episodes. Both hauntingly beautiful & tragic. Owen's speech at the bonfire in ep 4 is so powerfully felt. And ep 5... what can be said... tour de force. Mike Flanagan is known for his game-changing 5th episodes.

I literally just started A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms but I can't wait to wake up tomorrow and watch this perfectly splendid show with you guys πŸ–€
