Goodfellas (1990)

Comments

This is the first movie I think of when someone’s talking about a movie you catch on TV and end up watching the rest of just cause it’s on. I actually have a painting Henry Hill did on my wall back in the day when he was going on Howard Stern and all that. It’s like a kid painted it, but the Goodfellas connection makes it real.

The movie is pretty closely adapted from the book Wiseguy that Nicholas Pileggi wrote with Henry Hill. Some stuff was left out, like Henry joining the army and being dishonorably discharged and more info about the Lufthansa heist. Other than that, it's mostly small stuff like the fact that it was one of Paulie's sons that went on the double date with Henry and Karen rather than Tommy, at the time of his disappearance Tommy was married, and Henry and Karen eloped in real life. Some of the last names are different as well (Jimmy Conway=Jimmy Burke, Tommy DeVito=Tommy DeSimone, Paul Cicero=Paul Vario). Tommy really did kill Billy Batts, who was a friend of John Gotti's, and he is assumed to have been murdered as payback (although a few people think he was killed by Jimmy for being a rat). The Air France and Lufthansa heists were real. The main issue with the accuracy of the movie is whether or not the stories he told in Wiseguy were true. He was definitely a bigger scumbag than he comes off in the movie.

It's been a while since I've seen this movie and totally forgot how many actors in it that also pop up in The Sopranos, most notably (no spoilers here since they're part of the main cast) Lorraine Bracco and Michael Imperioli (the guy from White Lotus who was shot in the foot).
