Hancock 2008

Don't know if it's been mentioned but Will Smith is working on Hancock 2 after I am legend 2.

I think it was a timing thing with this movie that it was underrated. The third act had to grow on me, but I really like the first two acts.

So, one thing you guys said a few times is that you didn't know why you'd never heard anything about this movie. I can't say for sure, but I have a few theories. HANCOCK came out in 2008, which ended up being a defining year for the superhero movie genre. Prior to the 2010s there were FAR more misses than hits. Even the few redeeming franchises like X-MEN and SPIDER-MAN had fallen off a cliff with their most recent attempts at the time. For every WATCHMEN and BATMAN BEGINS there were a dozen RISE OF THE SILVER SURFERs and CATWOMANs. Stick with me here. While HANCOCK does actually allow Will Smith to do some decent emotional acting, the promotion for the film was entirely different. It just looked like a goofy action comedy with a likeable antihero yeeting whales into the ocean and destroying buildings. There was zero depth. I don't remember Charlize Theron even being in the trailers. So people went into the theaters to see a superhero movie at a time when superhero movies were usually terrible, and an action comedy at a time when those genres didn't really crossover beyond a quick quip or scene to break the tension. Basically, what I'm saying is... most people kind of assumed HANCOCK was going to suck, and when everyone goes into something expecting it to be bad, and then gets a movie they weren't at all expecting, it's going to influence the way you feel about it. It gets worse for poor HANCOCK. One month before its release, Marvel Studios dropped the film that would go on to redefine the superhero genre for the next two decades in IRON MAN. One month after HANCOCK's release, Christopher Nolan would drop the single greatest superhero film ever made in THE DARK KNIGHT. Let's just say nobody was talking about this film.

This was not even remotely what I was expecting either nothing about this screamed “superhero movie” I was very pleasantly surprised by it though
