Shutter Island (2010)

What I really remember about this movie is that scene where they're interviewing the woman and she asks for a glass of water but then we see her hold nothing in her hand for a brief second.... that frame haunts me!

I am only basing this on people I know. When they watch movies they don't appear to really pay attention. It is like their consciousness is watching, but their subconscious is thinking of other things, which is why they miss dialogue or action. In the end they really don't remember details. That is why I am so drawn to Rob & Trin; they pay attention and very little gets past them.

In my opinion and I watched this movie several times, I am 100% sure that he didn’t regress. I think unfortunately that he didn’t want to remember his life and subsequently what happened to his kids and what he did as a result. He just wanted peace. It’s still a very sad ending. This movie is pure genius, Di Caprio is excellent as usual.

@Cindy Same about The Sixth Sense. Knew what was going on from almost the get go. I've never understood why it's so surprising. But I grew up so steeped in movies... that certain ingrained likelihoods tipped me off.

It’s a really good movie, very atmospheric, but they gave away the truth about DiCaprio‘s character way too early. Great performances though, and heartbreaking ending.💔

as I said in my comment below: He did not regress. That's why he asked on the last moment 'is it better to live as a monster or die a good man?" It tells you that he willingly chooses the lobotomy because he can't live with what he has done. He can't live as a monster.

I know what you mean. I won't give away any spoiler, but my daughter and I went to the movie theater to see The Sixth Sense when it first came out. Just after one early scene we looked at each other and said the same thing. We KNEW. As you wrote, there were too many clues. This is not because we are overly intelligent. I think it is because we pay close attention to a film and we want an understanding of, and interpret, character and motivation. That is the reason why I will only go to see a movie in the theater alone, or with my daughter and son-in-law. I can't stand someone constantly yammering in my ear, or continually asking "What did they say?" or some other inattentive question.

Cindy

Never hear about this move before I loved the entire vibe it felt cozy, mysterious and unique. The way everything started breaking down towards the middle and end of the movie had me questioning what was happening every second it was masterfully done. The scene with him pulling his kids from the water absolutely breaking down had me about to cry the acting was insane. The ending was really sad I hope he was playing a part pretending to go back to how he was but I don’t think so I think sadly he just regressed again

oh my i've been so addicted to TWD that i didnt even see this get posted! my number 1 movie and i know yall will enjoy it as well.

I also wanna point out again that HE blames himself for that, not that I blame him for it. Even though I definitely understand.

Ninaofthe90s

what do you mean she didn't tell him? He just confirmed it himself in the last 15 minutes of the movie that she did. He said that there was something in her brain, and he ignored it and didn't get her help.... at 2:07:25 in the video "After Dolores tried to kill herself the first time, she told me she had an insect living in her brain. She could feel it clicking across her skull pulling the wires for fun. She told me that, but I didn't listen". Now I used more direct words, but it means the same thing. And she literally tried to kill herself!! ...so no I don't think I'm painting a wrong image. Did she say "honey I have a mental illness"? no, she used different words, I think most people would, but he makes it clear in his story that he understood very well what she meant.

Ninaofthe90s

This is one of those movies that makes me question my reality. Am I really on this website? Am I really typing these words right now? Do I even exist? Seriously though, the editing is strange. There are several scenes with continuity issues - a character's arm for example is in one position in one angle but a completely different one in the opposite angle. I wonder if that's on purpose since "Teddy" is obviously living a delusion.

Michael Celia

She never directly said that to him though at least based on what the movie gives us. He was told by other people in his life that his wife had issues including a doctor but she was never sitting there like "I have a severe mental illness and I will snap please send me to a mental hospital" or anything like that. That would've probably convinced Andrew to take her in but she wouldn't ever request him to lock her away herself. Now I'm not justifying him doing nothing about it, it very clearly was still the wrong decision because his children paid the price, but you're painting the wrong image in the way you worded this comment.

Reavezz

yes you got it right in the end. He didn't regress. That's why he said: "Which would be better, to live as a monster or die a good man?" He decided to have the lobotomy because he couldn't live with what he did. He doesn't blame himself mostly for killing his wife. I mean sure he does - but mostly he blames himself for not listening to Dolores. She basically told him she has a severe mental illness, a bug in her brain - and that she could snap anyday. he didn't take it seriously and didn't get her any help. Instead he stayed away drinking and then she killed the kids. That's what he blames himself for. He could've protected the kids if he had listened.

Ninaofthe90s

Good to know! Wìll give it a try.

I love this movie, which is weird to say when considering the subject matter. But it is so well constructed that it is always a good rewatch, with friends at home that have never seen it, or in this case with Rob not knowing anything about it, other than it was good, because 1. People can guess but are never absolutely sure about what is going on and 2. Always find some new detail in the rewatch. The ending is always heartbreaking, him in the water, and then - to what to me is - the choice of "die a good man". Absolutely wonderful performances by Leo and Ruffalo, a man that still deserves more for his acting than just being awesome as doctor Banner and been utterly lovable as a person, he's been killing it, acting wise, in other projects for years and years.

I love Scorsese but I have to be honest. Spoiler!!! I figured it out pretty early on back when I watched it in 2010. I like the movie a lot and I've watched several reactions - but I can't help but notice how obvious the twist is. Of course you can say "that's just because you already know the twist". But I figured it out pretty early on and now rewatching it - it's not very subtle. There are other movies with great twists, and when I rewatch them I can still admire how well the twists are hidden. You can solve it if you pay a lot of attention but it doesn't spoon-feed you. This movie on the other hand hits you over the head with it. Way too many clues and therefore it wasn't as mysterious as I had hoped. But the atmosphere is still pretty great, Scorsese and DiCaprio together are always a win. There are a lot of other things I can appreciate about this movie. Sir Ben Kingsley and Michelle Williams are amazing. The cinematography and music as well. And I do love the emotional component. It's just very predictable in my opinion.

Ninaofthe90s

As always, the book is better than the movie. I read it when it came out, and I remember when I got to the last page I went back to page one and started over to see all the things I'd missed. Leo is a great actor, but the book is so much better .

Michelle

damnnnn why'd I see this at 3 am. I know what I'm doing tomorrow!

Bblack 118

Omg I mean this in the nicest way but it pissed me off how quick Rob guessed it 😂 this movie is a major mindfk for sooo many people and the reveal ending is what makes it so loved and acclaimed, and here goes Rob guessing it less than halfway through lol you’re too smart for your own good!

Reavezz

I am so excited!
