The Purge (2013)

Comments

I would build a basement just for them and make sure they get to see the next 60 purges on tv while chained.

Deathhead

This movie is uber-American. Guns, violence, twisted sense of patriotism, and some freaky religious crap all mixed together.

Rick Haydn Horst

Sadly, one of our political candidates suggested that a possible solution to crime would be to have "one really violent day".

AZalan

Always thought this one was bit overrated and kinda boring. But as usual, your reaction made it better

Chris Reed

Uff, yeah daybreakers..... Even Waking Life that I adore, is polarizing amongst critics... Now that I've given even more attention to his trajectory because of your recommendation (Thank you), I've discovery a plethora of titles that, once again, seem thought provoking, but they rarely perform well critics wise. I'll investigate further 🧐. Thank you 😊

Marisol Ferreira Simões

Ethan Hawke did a run of movies that aren't the best but he was good in them. There was one called Day Breakers that is pretty bad but if I see it pop up for streaming I will watch it just because I know he'll at least be interesting to watch. The one that I don't hear many folks talk about that is just legit good is 'Before the Devil Knows You're Dead'. It's kind of a neo-noir movie. Awesome cast top to bottom; Ethan Hawke, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Albert Finney, Marissa Tomei, Rosemary Harris, and Amy Ryan. The last film that Sidney Lumet directed, hella good if you haven't seen it and the type of film is to your taste.

James W.

Agreed, I had avoided it because it isn't my jam, I like dytopias with like zombies and crazy cars roaring across the desert. Watching it with Rob and Trin was way more satisfying.

James W.

Yeah, I would be concerned about killing outside of the purge window but with so much death whatever the powers that be would be hard pressed to discern the difference. My biggest concern would be for my children but as I pointed out in an edit, they are already screwed; no shot they are okay after watching not just the dad and boyfriend die, but then for the neighbors to turn on them. Like, if you aren't just put in a looney bin, then the sister and brother I just the next purge kill cult bad guys. That society doesn't work. Then again, non-purge America kinda feels like it doesn't work most of the time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, It is all fake smiles and you live under a constant state of paranoia, like I wouldn't trust anyone, I would just hide in my house or realistically, just try to get out of a country like that. I would be the one at the border begging for asylum in Canada or Mexico assuming that all of NA hasn't just become a continental dystopic purge state. Then again, I already hide in my house, so I guess I an halfway ready for the purge. :D I just think of how one really bad election had folks either looking at getting out of the country or conversely buying more guns. The US feels insane sometimes.

James W.

For real I am not a vengeful person but there is no those people are walking out of my house after doing that to me and to my kids. Since they were ok with dying on purge night I would have waited until after it ended to kill them so they wouldn’t get any satisfaction out of it

James

It wouldn't work at all, the entire country would implode if people had a day of no consequences.

James W.

I play video games to escape from the horrible world not for catharis but I 100% understand.

James W.

Normally I would get my Ethan Hawke fix wherever I can, but somehow this one slipped off my radar.. and as someone that has somewhat follow his career choices since been what I think as a charachiture of himself as Troy in Reality Bites, he often chooses thought provoking themes for his career path, but more often than not, the very thoughtful hypothetical experiment won't translate to the actual film in the most satisfactory way. In my humble opinion there was a lot to do with the premise, but it was shown on, may I say, on a too simplistic way for the magnitude of the concept, maybe? Because it wasn't just a jump scare movie, it wanted to be more, and it doesn't get there. I don't know anything else about the sequels or series, but for what I've read here, because of some comments, it seems the theme was better explored and expanded on, in another instalments, most fortunately then. Not my cup of tea this movie, but as always a delight to watch movies with Rob and Trin reaction of it, no matter what.

Marisol Ferreira Simões

Another great reaction. Lena Headey is great in everything, even when she is a horrible person I like to watch her be a horrible person. Would love to see you guys watch Dredd at some point, I'll have to try and get it on a poll. Edit: While I respect the mothers restraint at the end, there is no way on god's green earth I am letting people who threatened my children and killed my husband go. That being said, those kids are fucked already. You can't experience that level of violence with no affect. As I was watching, you mentioned Dexter and I had the thought of a version of this film where the crazy kill cult comes to kill someone but doesn't realize that the person they are coming for is basically a serial killer who plans all year for the purge. Like a spider who weaves a web all year, subtly antagonizing a bunch of people and then whoever comes on purge day are their victims. I don't know if they have done something like that in one of the sequels but it would rad. Especially if they cast some one totally unexpected in the role. Then make sure to slow play the reveal that the role is actually reversed. There is an obvious critique of our quietly caste based society in the US. We don't run wild in the streets once a year murdering each other but we have kind of set up society so that more disadvantaged folks take the consequences of our sociology-economic structure. Folks at the bottom, and what's left of the middle, are so exhausted from just trying to get by that rebelling in any way feels impossible. Like the stuff that goes down here that people just shrug and move from is wild. if you start breaking down the world we live in it can bee seen as fairly dystopic. The Yee-haw freedom and bootstraps bullshit is wearing incredibly thin. For all the guff that social media gets, i see way more regular people looking at the world and going, "This obviously doesn't work, why are we still doing X,Y, and Z?" I do enjoy movies like this because they are essentially talking about that stuff in subtext so it doesn't feel preachy, but also it is terrifying/depressing. I live in the hood and I feel like a "purge" situation would be very different here. Either racists would roll in to exterminate people or the broken people already functionally trapped here would turn our town into a Mad Max-like hellscape with groups forming and murdering each other. It seems far fetched but I just look at our history of events like the Tulsa Massacre and I know there are far too many people who would happily repeat that out of their fear, ignorance, and hopelessness.

James W.

I like the movie but it isn't one of my favorites. But it was really nice to watch it with you!❤ Some comments from Rob were so cute. "Are they coming to help?" 🤭 No Rob, not really...😁

Flopsi80

Nah the idea of a purge reducing crime is insane. If someone kills my entire family during the purge you best bet I’m getting them all back the next day. I would not have been able to let those people go I would have killed all of them slowly the idea that those psychopaths are still in the world after what they did to my children I would never sleep again. That blond lady was beyond infuriating I would have loved to see her get her head bashed in by that shotgun I hate her face

James

Surprisingly, this is the first time I've seen this movie even though I've seen all the rest. It's not as bad as so many ppl say it was, just some annoying decisions made. Plus it annoys me to all hell when ppl don't pick up the guns of ppl they kill. Though the concept itself is despicable, the movies are entertaining to watch

Keyuana Gray

The greatness of the writing in this movie: "Charlie, just focus on your sister. See if she's waking up" — while they're duct-taping some guy. Why, though? If she wakes up, she's not going to turn into a zombie or anything. A waste of 30 seconds, and the movie does this a lot!

Dude

Completely agree. This movie was a great introduction to the concept but I think it finds its feet from the second movie onwards

MissKitty

The first movie is great, but #2 and #3 are my favourites and the TV show was phenomenal. Although The Purge was very much a home invasion style, the rest of the franchise branches out to show more of this reality and each one adds something fresh so I would love to see more reactions! Great one, thanks for watching.

MissKitty

Man, everybody but the homeless guy did everything they could to die lol that was a fun watch though

Landon DuVall

The only Purge that I enjoy is #3. Because of EM.

Octavia

I get my stress release killing zombies in Dying Light 2 😅🤷🏾‍♀️

Jenny Lee Villanueva

The Purge siren has been my ringtone since this movie came out 😁💜

Jenny Lee Villanueva

Yeah, the concept of the Purge makes absolutely no logical sense, particularly since something like 40% of homicides in the US are crimes of passion...then again, when is logic ever present in a horror film...plus, imagine the insurance premiums... Nah, if I need to get aggression out, that's what the gym is for...dumbbells don't have feelings...

Michael Celia

Why would the boyfriend try to kill the father to be with the daughter? Why would she want to be with him after he killed her father? I have a lot of issues with the premise that this would be acceptable to the country. The amount of fear and trauma this would unleash. The insurance companies would go bankrupt.

Bradley Weeks

the 2nd is one of my favs as well, I hope they check it out at one point.

Ekk

More realistically you'd likely just wake up in the middle of the night to be spirited away by some shady government group and thrown into a gulag somewhere like how the CCP does it or how the Soviets used to do it. Same with the Third Reich and pretty much any authoritarian state. Check out Haitian Secret Police and how they terrorized their country for decades.

Jack Mingle

Good movie. Great reaction. The only part that ticked me off was how much guilt tripping every member of the family was putting James through. In his mind, delivering the man to the people outside was helping the family. The man was going to die no matter what, so he was saving his family. To me it's insane that his wife and children were so quick to blame him. There was literally no other option. Of course, due to plot armour and movie magic, there WAS another option and everyone (ironically except James) was fine, but realistically the family would've been dead. That's my only complaint. Apart from that, fascinating idea and I'm very interested in the rest of the franchise.

Seiinity

basically this movie is sacrifice your husband for a random guy you’ve never met😂

thomas fowler

My favorites in this franchise are actually the 2nd and the 3rd movies lol mostly because of one character. I also liked the tv show.

Emmy

The idea of Purge is based on a Star Trek episode "Return of Archons". A computer was managing and controlling human population on a planet. After forcing people to act nice and civilized, computer allowed for 12 hours (Red Hour) for mayhem to let people vent.

Scarlett Monrow

there is a TV show about The Purge, idk if that's what you were talking about, but there's 2 seasons. I actually VASTLY prefer the TV series to this 1st movie, but i also enjoyed The First Purge (confusing, that's the title, lol it released in 2018) more than some of these early ones. Over all tho, I'm a big fan of the storyline these movies & the TV series eventually take on. It's quite frightening when you dig into it. Edit: as an American, how do I feel about it? That it's honestly scarily possible to one day become a reality. The government would prob be more subtle about it, but there are... def certain government officials that probably would not mind this happening. We're already a surveillance state... and becoming more and more of a police state.

Love this franchise 💜💜
