FIRST TIME WATCHING Groundhog Day (1993) REACTION

Comments

amazing movie i studied this in a philosphy class in college. He was in the loop for about a thousand years. yes being selfless and letting go of his ego and doing so naturally just because it's the right thing not in order to get out of the loop is what is implied to have stopped the loop

Chloe Arabella

a good one

Wayneppanic

Love this movie.. this is my second fav Bill Murray feature. β€œWhat About Bob” is my favorite

kimburley

Love this film and I think many of us can relate to feeling like we're stuck in Groundhog Day - reliving the same nonsense day after day - it always reminds me that I need to shake up my life, do something different, make a change in the world! I think the Barman has relived that day so many times not in the same sense as Phil but the fact he's stuck behind that bar day after day seeing the same lousy men try it on with women, he's seen it all before!

@AmethystRock

I'm super thrown off by that bartender.... what was the point of that character???

Angelina Sargent

Great reaction, this is one of my all-time faves! Watching it again, the manipulation part sort of gave me Passengers vibes. If you haven't seen it, I hope you can react to "It's a Wonderful Life". Similar themes to this one. (Just please, please use the black-and-white version, not the awful colorized version!)

JM63

Such a fun movie! Though the old guy dying and then getting all the soup gets me every time. :(

Rebeccaf87

Saw an interview with the director once, and he estimated that for Phil to perfect all the skills and knowledge he had of the entire town, to the level he did, he would have had to spend over 20 years in the time loop.

Keith Duperreault

Woodchuck!

k4rizz4

Also, just to clarify and define what a Groundhog is: it's a marmot. Here in Colorado we only refer to them as marmots. I've heard them being called Groundhogs, woodchucks and even Whistlepigs but like so many things, we can use the words interchangeably. As Rob pointed out fall/autumn.

Maggie Barbour

Technically she did, she just doesn't remember it. Or...maybe subconsciously she does. They were all trapped for the same amount of time. More importantly, Phil now believes in himself and that he does deserve Rita and that it is ok to be happy. Having said all that....great point JD and one I'd never thought of!

Dorinda Schaper

I'd like to know how they figured that out...I was thinking more around a few years πŸ˜‚

Dorinda Schaper

What a movie! Egon is Harold Ramis who also written and directed the movie btw :)

lemmy101

Such a fun film, been many years since I'd watched it, was fun doing it with you guys

Kim Magee

I think as the audience we are conditioned to monitor small and subtle cues that a character knows more than they let on. It might have been a miss this time. But I will also state that as somebody with more hospitality experience than I care to elaborate on, I learned not to react to stuff like this as I prefer not to involve myself, and still curiously listen whilst I looked busy :)

Sven Hudec

The barman kept shaking his head because he was hearing the lame, cliche, cheesy chat up lines

Jaxon's Jerseys

I love this movie. It's a classic example of how to deliver deep meaning without doing crazy things.

Count Monte-Cristo

Bill Murray plays the "obnoxious, sarcastic, pessimistic character trope so damn well. He's great. I think the eye-rolling bartender has just heard it all, and is sick of it. We don't have groundhogs where I come from, but I've heard the stories, which is why it took me a long time after it came out in theatres to watch this movie. It was only after I heard the premise, and not just saw the title, that I became interested. Great concept. If you like Andie MacDowell, she's in a great movie called "Four Weddings & a Funeral." Have you seen it? One of my favorite Hugh Grant movie. Love him.

angie808

I usually watch this every Groundhog Day, one of my favorite movies, and lots of great funny quotes.. Fun fact, they filmed this movie in reverse order because Bill Murray usually becomes more cranky the longer a film shoot is, so the beginning of the movie when Phil is a jerk, is Bill Murray when he is actually more grumpy..

Superpotroast

Haven't you watched this already?

PsYcHoKiLLa

One of my favorites

Chris Reed

it's a fair thought lol

Chris Reed

New Hampshire here, totally agree!

Carrie Petty

17:33 - why not? It's barely snowing and visibility is great. When you can't see 2 feet in front of your car due to snowstorm - then you stop.

Scarlett Monrow

Groundhog day isn't a national holiday that we "observe" here in the United States, it is on our calanders and it gets news coverage each year during the weather segmant of the morning nrews. It's more of a fun type holiday like the movie shows it as a light hearted winter celebration. Here in Texas pray the Groundhog doesn't see is shadow so we get an early start on Spring, and Tornado Season!!!

But if it was common would not even be worth reacting to? Have been in that situation myself so just saying

Take a Ticket

The director of the film, Harold Ramis, once said that, taking into account everything Phil had to learn and experience, it was figured he spent between 30 and 40 years reliving the same day.

MaggieS61

A bartender rolling his eyes at someone trying to pick up women at the bar doesn't mean he knows the guy is in a time loop. That makes no sense

gcdnr2272

Every Groundhog Day people in the US ask, β€œdid they little bastard see his shadow?”

Ben

The sublime tragedy of Groundhog Day is that Phil didn't end up with the Rita who knows his secrets, saw him at his lowest and became his trusting partner, but the Rita who saw him as inexplicably perfect.

JD Nevesytrof

Sadly, Groundhog Day is a thing. Punxsutawny Phil is the most prominent one, but there are groundhogs (or similar animals) all over the US who supposedly predict the end of winter. I work at a local news station and our meteorologist absolutely hates Groundhog Day. Every Feb. 2, he goes into a hilarious "don't-get-me-started" rant...naturally the anchors always get him started. BTW, someone apparently somehow figured out how long Phil spent in his time loop and it came out to over 12,000 days or nearly 34 years!

Michael Celia

Yeah it's celebrated all over the US & Canada, but I have no idea why we still do it lol

k4rizz4

Groundhog Day is not a real holiday here in America. It is not observed by any government(national, state, but maybe local/city) that I know of.

Matt O'Keefe

Have to laugh at the bit at 17:30, Rob seems so adamant he wouldn't drive in that. If we in Canada didn't drive in weather like that we'd be homebound for months at a time.

Kenton Kruger

Such a funny movie! So great! I can't wait to watch it with you two :-)

Dorinda Schaper

I couldn't click fast enough!! This is one of my all time favourite movies :D :D :D Thank you for adding this to your poll.
