Better Call Saul: S5E06 Wexler v. Goodman First time watching!

At this exact point in time (Wexler vs Goodman episode, NOT LATER) ... I really don't understand how you could possibly feel so sorry for Howard given the shit that him and Chuck did to Jimmy in the past? "Not justified" ???? How can you possibly put into balance some bowling balls thrown on his car and some hookers sent to his table ... with the things that both Howard and Chuck did to Jimmy? They tried to take away his job, his livelihood, they always treated him like crap, they always humiliated and wanted to destroy his career. Jimmy pot himself through lawschool just to get his brother's approval, he took care of him every fkin day ... but he was never good enough for these 2 toolbags. And don't give me the "that was Chuck, not Howard" bullshit! Going along with it is the same as doing it! They were celebrating Jimmy's suspension with a 25k bottle of scotch! Did you forget that "extra 33 cents for the cassette tape, and the apology he had to make in front of Chuck"? Both you and Trin were furious back then ... WHAT HAPPENED? Did that vanish because Pretty Blond Boy had a few jokes played on him? And now he's tying to make himself feel better by throwing a job at Jimmy? Namaste, my ass! Awwww, poor Howard, right? SPOILER: What happens in future episodes is a totally different thing ... my question is for THIS moment. Not to mention that Howard's future fate resides much more on Kim's shoulders. She was the driver for that ride.

The scene where Jimmy works his magic against Kim at the meeting with Mesa Verde is top tier television. Honestly 10/10.

Yes, Kim is mad at Jimmy in the end of this episode, and rightly so. But how can she teach him a lesson? He's impervious to any attempt to be held accountable for his actions. So she makes him feel regret and fear the only way she can — she plays him like he played her. She makes him think she's mad and forces him to really come to terms with what he did, then twists it into a marriage proposal — her original intent all along. We all have no problem seeing Jimmy as the con man, but "Giselle" is the master. Jimmy does it every day, but when Kim does it, she does it big and kills it. Jimmy sells fake collector coins to a drunken business man for a few dollars; Kim swaps out the Mesa Verde drawings at a government office and saves the company millions of dollars. Jimmy uses a look-alike to get his client a mistrial; Kim creates an entire town full of church-going friends of Huell to get him out of an assault charge. Kim played the player in this episode. It's one of my favorite scenes in the series.

Your reactions are all my first times watching Season 5, and holy SHITTTTT, I was SO MAD AT THE ENTIRE MEETING SCENE, insane that Jimmy pulled that stunt. And I'm completely thrown for a loop with the Kim cliffhanger chat! This is wild. What a great show.

Sure, Howard doesn’t deserve to be picked on over and over again, but he’s no saint either. He treated Kim terribly when she worked at HHM and very much took out his frustrations on her. He also was Chuck’s lackey in his battle against Jimmy. He really dislikes Howard for being Chuck's yes man and blocking Jimmy from the firm, as well as punishing Kim so severely for Jimmy's screw-ups. He represents everything that Jimmy hates about the establishment.

You are right (and you mentioned it in a previous episode), that the reason we get so frustrated to the point of anger at Jimmy, is because of Kim. We want Kim to have better, and clearly Jimmy is not good for her, especially when he takes it to the level of being Saul. But, as good a person as Kim can be, she has a dark side too, and has, on occasion, allowed (and even participated in) some of his antics. She's having a hard time of it now, because she's the one that was embarrased and affected directly by what he did. I can't believe you guys are already on Season 5.

Rob, Trin - huge respect for your aftershow conversation. Obviously, for us it's easier because we've seen it and had a lot of time to process these events. But I have to say, right off the bat, your insights are very accurate and shows how well you understand these characters and the greyness of their actions. I really enjoyed listening to your summary. Thanks!
