This strangely constructed sword is home to an even stranger creature, one that seems to live within the blade somehow, treating it as a snail or mollusk would its shell. 

As the wielder bonds with the creature inside and gains its trust, the power of the sword grows. Actions such as feeding the creature (its diet consisting mostly of blood and bits of creatures your wound with the sword), caring for the blade, keeping it away from fire (the creature’s greatest weakness), and generally praising its performance, will improve your level of friendship with the creature. 

Companions.

You gain a +1 to Attack and Damage rolls with this magical weapon. 

Perceptive Prey. The creature within the sword has senses keenly attuned to danger and will rattle in the sheathe, alerting its wielder, whenever a hostile creature comes within 60 ft of it. This rattling can be quelled by a comforting hand on the sword’s hilt and a kind word. 

Friends. 

The sword’s bonus to Attack and Damage rolls increase to +2.

Wings of Steel. Once per turn, on a successful melee attack, you can cause wing-like blades to unfold from the sword, dealing an additional 9 (2d8) Slashing damage.

Skeleton Key. As an action, you can press the sword to a door or other locked object, allowing the creature inside to use its tendrils to pick the lock. To do so, you must ask nicely and the door cannot have been locked by magical means. After 1 minute, the door (or other object) will be unlocked. This ability cannot be used again until you finish a long rest. 

Best Friends. 

The sword’s bonus to Attack and Damage rolls increase to +3.

Bond of the Blade. At any time, you may use a bonus action to call your sword to you, causing it to fly in the most direct path to your hand. The sword must be able to hear your call to respond. 

Skyfish Slash. As an action, you may hurl your sword, allowing the creature to spread it’s bladed wings and take flight. Choose a number of creatures up to your proficiency modifier within 60ft. and make an attack roll against each, as the sword flies by each at breakneck speeds, cutting into them. A creature hit by this attack takes 45 (10d8) Slashing damage. This attack cannot be used again until you finish a long rest. 

Betrayal.

Friend or Food?

At any time you may put this sword in a fire to roast the creature within. Cooking the creature takes approximately one hour. After the hour, the hilt and crossguard will crumble away, revealing the tender flesh inside. Devouring this morsel increases your maximum hit points by 20 permanently.
