Left Hand Magic Art Style - Poll
Added 2021-09-21 03:23:15 +0000 UTCAlright! This has been waaayyy too delayed. The truth is I had a lot more trouble than I'd hoped in getting a consistent application of anything but photoreal results. As is, I'm not entirely happy with the alternative style option, as I couldn't quite get the more anime/comic style I was going for to be replicable across all of the test images. Which, given that there will be hundreds of images in the game eventually, wasn't a good sign. Instead, what I had to settle for was a digital oil paint style, which I'm just not so sure about. The photoreal option (which is what Haven's Port uses) actually appeals a bit more to me, I think And not just because it won't give me as many headaches.
Still, ultimately, the choice is yours! Because Patreon is stupid and I can't make an image post a poll, here are the two links to compare the two styles! Note, these are BIG images, probably better viewed on a monitor, else you're going to be doing a lot of zooming -_-.
Style 2 - Digital Oil Paint Style
So...which style would you rate see for Left Hand Magic?
P.S. Oh yeah! The Blue Haired girl on top is the game's Blood Mage, I think this is the first time I've actually shown her to you guys! I might still be tweaking her a bit farther, but only to add tats if I choose to. I haven't decided yet.

Sadly, due to the number of images the game will have(and the fact that I'm a solo developer with no staff), the process needs to be one that can be automated to a reasonable degree. And, after days of fiddling with photoshop actions to do that, I couldn't get a style like what you're talking about to consistently apply to all images without having to tweak each individual image to a degree that would utterly cripple production speed :-(. Trust me, something like that was what I was actually trying for, it just didn't work out.

One easy way to achieve such a style would be to just add black boarders to objects and around the character outlines. And adding a bit of grain over the whole image post rendering also looks great. Also reflections should have clear defined edges, so that they don‘t look like airbrushed on.
