Doctor Who 8x7 Kill The Moon

So, we've had Let's Kill Hitler and now Kill The Moon. To my surprise, I saw on IMDB when I got the description that this episode is not well liked. I thought the concept was cool and unusual, but hey, I guess we all can't agree!

The ending with Clara was a bit surprising and sad, but she did bring up some valid points. Curious to see where this goes...

Doctor Who 8x7 Kill The Moon

Some background on The Meanie Doctor. The first actor way back in 1963 played the role reflecting the paternal authority figure of the attitudes of the times, such to say he was a bit severe. He softened as the times changed. In the 1980s the Sixth Doctor appeared and the writers decided to experiment and give him back that severity. It was quite unpopular from the outset, significantly due to his immediate post regenerative state. Gripped by memory loss and trauma he was paranoid and hostile to the companion and literally gripped her. To be clear he tried to strangle her. The remarkable Steven Moffat has long had a fascination with both dark leads and trying to make the mistakes of the past fit within story logic. And so we get Capaldi's Doc who seems at times cold, ugly and brutal. However Moffat does make good on his challenges. You've seen how the colder incarnation allows him to play with themes of loneliness of old age. And then there's Clara. She's far exceeding her time with Eleven to become a character who's confident, singularly minded, quite personality powerful. Their unique dynamic will continue. And the, what's the word, the synergy of them, their togetherness changes both in radical ways making both more interesting. This makes for more than a few fan favourite scenes. The presence of Danny Pink in his role as a soldier also draws on the past. Almost every incarnation of The Doctor has shown a strong dislike for military people. The exception is the Third. To be concise he had a number of people, UNIT, who might fit description of companion who were army, especially Brigadier Lethbridge Stewart, Kates father, who we could call one of his best friends despite their constant biting heads. (And if you ever fancy a classic Doctor session, the Third is highly addictive) All to say Soldier Danny is part of Steven Moffats challenge to himself to explore the Doctor's lack of empathy for anyone military, and the contradictions that come with being a friend to UNIT.

I think this is one of those episodes where there are some good points but perhaps could have been executed a bit differently which is where I think the mixed reactions stem from, I like the Clara/Peter version of the Doctor dynamic, I really enjoy them antagonising each other lol Kinda surprised Doctors and companions don't have more fights! I just think the point he was trying to make could have been done without the Doctor just going 'Right, I'm off' lol So all that was a good idea and the discussion of just how much should the Doctor help in humanity's cause is a great rabbit hole to go down just think even for Peter's Doctor him just bouncing is a bit out of character. Regarding the egg part, I mean yes it's a bit weak but if you started hating on Who episodes with weak science you have no show lol Also, can we give some props to 'I'll hit you so hard you'll regenerate' lol What a line.
