Doctor Who 8x01 Deep Breath

And we are BACK with a brand new Doctor! I know nothing about Peter Capaldi, but from what I've seen so far - he's left me impressed. I love that he is an older Doctor. I feel it's so suitable coming from the 11th Doctor and what he had to endure in the many years leading up to his regeneration. It just feels right to me that the Doctor is weathered and worn a bit.

I am so ready for this season - Geronimo 😊

I couldn’t tell if you finally made the connection to The Girl in the Fireplace or not. It looked like you almost had it when they mentioned Madame Du Pompadour. I could see in your face that it reminded you of SOMETHING, but you couldn’t make that final connection.

Did the Doctor push the droid, or did the droid jump? I like that they made it deliberately ambiguous. Missy draws attention to it in the outro too. And the Doctor himself tells the droid “do not make assumptions about how far I’ll go to protect them.” Some food for thought!

And so begins the era of my favorite Doctor and favorite companion! I love that you caught that the Doctor’s broom metaphor unintentionally reflects his thoughts and confusion about his own identity at this point: after so many faces, so many “replaced parts,” who is he, really 🧹? What sort of man/Doctor is he? He doesn’t know, and we know how the Doctor doesn’t like to not know something. As for Clara, we have started to see a more fleshed out picture of her as a person ever since the “Impossible Girl” arc resolved. Her friendship and bond with the 11th Doctor grew and deepened into something really special and tender across the last three episodes (The Name of the Doctor, The Day of the Doctor, and The Time of the Doctor), for one thing. And we’ve also started to see more of her prickly personality shine through. I love the line in the previous episode when she describes herself as “bubbly personality masking bossy control freak” when she’s in the truth field. And in this episode, we got “nothing is more important than my egomania.” LOL. We also see her draw on her experience as a teacher to get out of a tricky situation. (Having worked as a teacher’s aide, I can personally testify that experience working with middle schoolers will more than qualify you to take on villainous aliens, cyborgs, and more, LOL.) So to sum up, we have on one hand bossy, control freak, “5 foot 1 and crying, you never stood a chance,” teacher Clara, and on the other hand, we have this older, less patient, less filters, attack eyebrows, Scottish (“I can be angry now!”), not “a hugging person,” “who frowned me this face,” “I’m not your boyfriend Clara (my mistake, not yours!)” Doctor 🧹. And the question is, what sort of relationship/dynamic will they have? I won’t answer that, but I will say that, to *me*, they are the most fascinating Doctor/Companion pair in all of Doctor Who, and I can’t wait to experience this amazing season with you :)

Here we go with my favorite doctor, can't wait to see how you will feel about him as the season progresses, and we get to see more of him.

Well, the moment has finally arrived. After watching all your great reactions up to this point I have finally caught up with you. This is the first reaction I have watched where I don't have the next episode reaction ready to go, I have to wait a week. It feels weird lol. Clearly the only solution to this is you must now do daily Who reactions. Sorry to do this to you but I don't see any other way really...

I loved your thoughts on regeneration and how as you've gotten more experience of the show you've adjusted to the experience more and can appreciate each Doctor as you know you only have so much time with them. It's wonderful to appreciate that while it's always sad to say goodbye to a Doctor, its also exciting to get to see a new one and get to know them. I did enjoy them using Clara as a stand-in for fans who complain that a new Doctor isn't 'their' Doctor and to see her taught a lesson. Steven Moffat actually wanted to cast an older Doctor when he took over the show but was impressed enough by Matt Smith to cast him anyway. Now we get our older Doctor, with Capaldi being the last Doctor born before the show started, and almost certainly will be the last who was born before William Hartnell (the First Doctor) died, which was 50 years ago last month. If that doesn't hammer home how old this show is, I don't know what does ;) It's good timing that they brought up the mystery of who gave Clara the Doctor's number, just as there's a mystery of who put the ad in the paper for them both. I've been meaning to mention the former recently to remind you that there's still something about Clara that hasn't been resolved yet.
