Buffy 7x14 First Date

Comments

I think this was the first time I noticed that!

Anya was cleaning it for Buffy. Dawn was checking out Buffy's clothes when she spilled the pizza.

Yep, second time now. The first time I ended up with a broken wrist but this time I was lucky and got away with barely a scratch, so no need to worry. It WAS a low speed collision but it wasn't a grandma driving. It was a VERY tall South African guy (I'm 6'1 myself and the guy was still towering above me!). I was cycling home when he (extremely) close-passed me and then immediately turned left, cutting across my path and causing us to collide. After a lot of shouting it ended with me telling him to hand his licence back before he kills someone. Feel free to have a word with him Juliette!

Wood n Spike (sounds like a medieval tavern) is something I never expected but NOW LOVE and am obsessed with! It's one of the best little plot twists and I'm so invested! You know, a few people said they didn't like S7 but I think it's brilliant. It's had so many surprises, call backs to older episodes, funny moments, it feels good, the GILES thing, and now this! But we need to talk about you. Your second time getting hit by a car. I am a little concerned (and not amused, which is a strange thing as I usually like hearing about mishaps!). I hope it was driven by a grandma going 5km! Otherwise, I need to have a word with this person! Are you okay???

I never expected to like Andrew. I have been left surprised. VERY surprised 😆

Oh really, I thought she was cleaning it for Buffy! I do know that Buffy sometimes borrows Dawn's clothes. That's cool!

I LOVE IT TOO! It's so unexpected!!

The principal looking in the mirror - obviously looking at Spike - always bothers me. It's such a fundamental lore goof!

The shirt Anya tries to clean is a callback to Conversations with Dead People, when Dawn gets pizza on Buffy's shirt and she says "She'll think it's blood."

The rearview mirror bit and that Spike wouldn't have a reflection didn't even register with me until you mentioned it 😂

Melanie

I loved this whole story arc of Wood being the son of one of the slayers that spike killed in S5 Fool For Love, although she is played by a different actress.

Something that always bothered me this episode (way more than it should) is Robin only just realizing that Spike is a vampire when he sees his face turn and not when he looks at him in the rearview mirror. Something that I love though is the callback to when Dawn spilled pizza on Buffy's shirt in 'Conversations with Dead People'. Dawn said that Buffy will probably think it's blood, but when Anya is trying to clean out the stain, she says it might be pizza. I side with Giles when it comes to the argument he had with Buffy about removing Spike's chip, but I understand the logic behind her decision. However, I don't understand the logic behind her wanting Spike to stay knowing that he poses a serious threat, which proves Giles' claim that Buffy's judgment is clouded when it comes to Spike imo.

As Nell said, demon Lissa was played by Ashanti, a popular recording artist at the time (and since). I am not familiar with her music but she has received any number of awards, usually in the category of R&B (rhythm and blues). She also has a very prolific career in film and TV. She was 22 at the time of this episode.

I loved how Andrew tried to pump information from Jonathan/The First. "A new microwave?" LOL.

Love this episode! Finding out that Principal Wood is the son of a Slayer, and one that Spike killed no less, was a great reveal after making it seem that he was dodgy. Now of course we have the problem that he knows it was Spike's doing and that is obviously not good. I love that Xander attracting demon women is something that's been going on since the very first season. If I were him I'd be suspicious of any woman that talked to me! 😂 I remember being very surprised at the time that Ashanti starred as the date/demon women (I think I remember something about her being a big fan of the show, which is how that came about). What to say about Andrew? I mean, he's obviously done some awful things in the past and should face justice for them at some point, but he's not inherently evil, just easily led. And you know, good on him for standing up to The First and trying to help by obtaining information from it. Is it wrong that I kinda like him by this point? I can see Giles point about needing to forget about dating, etc, and start getting serious about what's to come, but at the same time, if it's likely that some/all of the gang are going to die soon surely now's the time to live their lives while they still still can right? Thanks for another excellent reaction Juliette. Hope you have a nice relaxing weekend after all you've been through recently 💜 (and I definitely hope you had a better Friday than I've had, what with getting hit by a car on my way home from work and ending up in a heap on the floor. Second time it's happened now!)

Crucial turning point, of course, for the final season. All the important characters in "Buffy" get iconic intros, but that "is-he-or-isn't-he" buildup for Principal Wood--- was something else! :D

Chris Carman

So great the way they kept adding so many new concepts to the mythology in this last season: the potentials, the bringers, the son of a slayer... This series kept giving until the end. And I always find the Buffy/Spike dynamic in this last season very bittersweet. There finally is a genuine connection between them, but there's also a certain sadness lingering in their little conversations.
