Doctor Who 7x6 The Snowman

So, Clara (aka Souffle Girl) is back once more! A lovely Christmas episode, emotional and whimsical, and with an ending I can't quite explain. Whatever is going on, it's interesting and I really don't have any ideas that seem to make sense yet!

I feel Clara is similar to Rory in some ways... Someone who you can't quite get rid of (and don't want to). Curious to see where this goes 😊

I hope you all have been as well as can be! I just want to thank everyone again for being so understanding. Life definitely feels like it's getting back on track.

Doctor Who 7x6 The Snowman

The 10th doctor got his hand cut off and now 11's hand had a mind of its own. Surely there's a connection there 🤣 As per your question of how long the Doctor stayed on the cloud/isolation, the last time he said his age (iirc) was in 6x1 when he told Amy he's 1103. All I'll say is you will find out in a soonish upcoming episode how old he is now. Although you obviously don't know how long he continued to have Amy and Rory as companions from his perspective after 6x1. This TARDIS design/set is easily my favourite. It is so alien yet also futuristicly human at the same time. It's also a 360 set(unlike past console rooms) so they can do shots where they just walk around and around the console. You will probably remember 9/10s and 11s other console were always shot with the door on the left of the screen. That's because the empty bit of the set was behind the camera when facing that way, giving the camera people room to move around. Also, on side note, Strax is easily one of my favourite characters. He is so funny 🤣

I've read a few comments from people saying that basically everything is spoiled for those watching in real time! That sucks 😭 At least there are SOME surprises, even if they aren't good ones 😅

Amazing! I love the colours!

What did you think about the new intro titles?

Adinium

I love that you, and other reactors get to experience her return this way. Sadly for those of us who watched it as it aired, they announced Karen and Arthurs departure ahead of season 7 so their exit wasn't a surprise. It was also announced that Jenna would be taking over, so she wasn't necessarily a surprise. What was a surprise to us was her appearing in the Dalek episode. We assumed in that moment that we'd have a little Tardis Team for a few episodes until Amy and Rory left so when she died at the end we were really confused. Personally I wish I got to experience it the way you did, because that's the way the Doctor experiences it.

Thank you, Alex! I have that one written down to make sure to watch beforehand. I really appreciate your help 💜

Hi there Julie just letting you know that this was the season leading up to the 50th anniversary episode The Day of the Doctor and that there is a mini side that you might want to check out before the episode called The Night of the Doctor when you get to that episode :)

One of the best NuWho intro sequences debuts! Featuring the return of the Doctor's face (an element included in the 3rd-7th Doctor's tenures), this time in a clever shape of space cloud!

The new console is much more "serious" than the more whimsical storybook design he picked for Amelia.

Murray Gold's music on Doctor Who is always really great, but especially Clara's theme is so memorable in its simplicity. It is heard first in the Asylum of the Daleks, when Soufflé Girl aka Oswin aka the Dalek tells the doctor to run. On a rewatch after having seen more of Clara this really hit me. (And there will be some future episodes where they use the theme even more effectively).

This is an important episode for fans of Classic Who - the Great Intelligence appeared twice in the Second Doctor's era, back in the late 1960's. The retrospective foreshadowing (timey wimey!) in this episode is excellent. The Great Intelligence tries taking over the world with robotic Abominable Snowmen in it's first appearance, and uses the London Underground to launch an attack across London in it's second, having been told in this episode that it's a key strategic weakness. Sadly, both serials fell foul of the BBC's habit of erasing or destroying old tapes, and for many years no copies of the episodes were thought to exist. The first serial remains almost entirely missing (though was recently made into an animation), but copies of the second serial were discovered in an abandoned TV station in Nigeria in 2013 - the year after this episode came out.

I remember watching this episode when it first aired and having the same difficulties as you trying to work out the whole Clara/Soufflé Girl thing. What helped me to get it straight in my head was to remember that people assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey... stuff.

I don't think VPN's work with Iplayer, unless that's changed recently.

Daryl

It is also on the BBC iplayer for free - if you (or your VPN 😉) is in the UK

This is my second favourite Christmas episode just behind Tennant's introduction. I too was immensely curious after this episode. Who is Clara? Why does she keep appearing? All I'll say is the answers, when they come, don't disappoint. Great reaction as always Jules, can't wait for next week.

The Rising Ape

The villian, The Great Intelligence is one from Classic Who. A story that is partially missing due to the BBC not properly archiving footage back then. In recent years the story has been recreated in animation form from the audio which has survived. It's called The Abominable Snowmen and is a second Doctor story. It's available to purchase on Prime for those that are interested.

Daryl

I like to have my own head cannon that the doctor changed the tardis as It reminded him of Amy and Rory

New TARDIS set!! The specific reason for the redesign is because of a move of studio. "Upper Boat Studios" was home to Doctor Who since 2004 & now home is "Roath Lock Studios" in Cardiff Bay. This gorgeous 360° set was designed by the late Michael Pickwoad RIP whom I had the pleasure of once meeting. It is the 1st set in new Who that has no holes in it being designed like a big pumpkin. The roof was also removable to aid filming but the set was big enough to have the crew inside it. I'm fortunate to say I have been on this set & have a prized photo of myself at the console on my wall & because it is a fully 360° set when I stepped through those blue doors it felt magical & like you were in the TARDIS for real. Just such a beautiful design!! 😍

I rewatched this episode at the weekend ahead of this reaction and it cemented how I already felt about this potentially being my favourite Christmas special and one of my favourite Eleventh Doctor episodes with so much going for it. In particular we have the return of Vastra, Jenny and Strax from "A Good Man Goes to War" as popular characters people wanted to see again and Strax in particular is a great comic relief character with how he can't help still acting like a Sontaran soldier even in his roles as a nurse and now a manservant. When I first watched you reaction to "Asylum of the Daleks" (which I also rewatched, your reaction I mean) I must admit that I burst out laughing when you said that you thought Oswin's name was Oswald and she'd make a good companion, knowing what was coming (as she's the companion for this episode regardless of how much of a role she has in future). It made this reaction one I was eager for as you recognised her and discovered not only that there was a link between the two characters but also that there's a 'present day' version out there as well an quite a mystery regarding what the deal is with them. In a way it's nice to see them show how much the loss of the Ponds affected the Doctor (and how it had clearly been a while, as seen in the state of the TARDIS), as well as how as much as he wants to leave things alone and not interfere, he just can't help himself in getting involved and saving humanity. Oh and the new TARDIS interior is probably my favourite of all time.

Alice Summers

It wasn't, thankfully! The ending was completely different to what I imagined! I thought it was another Martha moment, with a returning actor but a new character and just a cheeky mention of souffles to make the viewers smile... very surprising!

Juliette Gaming

Same here.

I really hope that the return of Souffle Girl wasn't spoiled for you.

All I will say is I can't wait.

One of my favourite Xmas episodes. Looking forward to rewatching
