Buffy 6x3 After Life - Early Access & Full

GREAT episode. LOVE it. The talk with Spike at the end is a highlight and it's such a pleasure getting a real and raw insight into Buffy's thoughts, feelings, and emotions right now. I feel sad for her, she's been through so much. She's incredibly strong, brave and resilient. If anyone can get through this, it's Buffy. She is so much more capable than what she thinks and my goodness, I'm often in awe of her πŸ’œ

I hope you all have a lovely weekend! I'm looking forward to NOT spending my Sunday in bed this time and actually being able to do stuff! I want to finish playing Strange Horticulture and want to try out the new Creatures of Ava game that is on Game Pass! So that's my plans and I'm excited πŸ˜…

Buffy 6x3 After Life - Early Access & Full

I did not read the moment on the tower as an attempted suicide, more a re-living of her death and trying to figure out what's happening to her. A longing to go back to the heavenly dimension, no doubt, but can somebody try to kill themselves if they don't even understand that they're alive again?

On the other hand it's a nice sneak peak for her future when she dies for the third and maybe then final time. She felt complete as in "job done". On the other hand, since Faith is in prison, and no new Slayer was chosen after Buffy's second death - maybe Willow resurrecting her is within Buffy's "destiny" anyway. I think it's a nice touch that the author's vision was that Buffy gets a reward for her sacrificing herself at the end of the show's initial run. Just undoing that because a new network was found imo would have been unsatisfying and would lessen the character arc from season 1 -5.

Dawn taking care of Buffy at the start of the episode is such a beautiful expression of sisterly love. It's one of my favourite Dawn moments, of which there are many. And then it's book-ended (well, almost) with Buffy running after Dawn to give her a lunch bag; Buffy taking care of Dawn.

Oh wow, lovely catch!

Juliette Gaming

Oh, I didn't know that! It would have been SO tough on him.... There's so much I don't know as I can't google!

Juliette Gaming

OH WOW........ !!!!!

Juliette Gaming

Spike has EVERYONE figured out haha! He's rather perceptive... I guess he's been around a while 😜 Yeah, the Willow thing.... Like, what is happening?! Can we have the girl back who floated pencils in the air, please!

Juliette Gaming

That is true!!

Juliette Gaming

I can't even imagine what she's been through. I feel so sad for her. She's got to be the strongest person ever 😭

Juliette Gaming

It just seems wrong that Buffy would be sent to a Hell dimension, but knowing she was in Heaven 😭😭 I feel so bad for her. The poor girl has been through too much.

Something interesting that I think is very symbolic is Buffy symbol is the hand for that spell they did in 4x21 . As the slayer she holds all of the gang together and she fights evil but now those hands are damaged just like Buffy is.

I do like Spike and especially his growth within the limits of the evil he is. (Vampires in Buffy are really evil, they don't have a choice, like Demons seem to have.) I think the problem, that some of the people who don't like the character, have with him, is that they forget that he's not capable of "turning good" and are ultimately disappointed when we are reminded of that. But as I wrote before, if vampires had this capability the whole show would make no (moral) sense, because it would in consequence turn Buffy and Angel into ruthless killers, who kill every vampire they meet without any distinction (apart from the soul-thing obviously).

Here are some quotes by Anthony Head that explain why he wanted to be less involved in season 6: " I lived in Los Angeles for five years, while my partner Sarah and the girls - Daisy was four and Emily was six - stayed in England. I'd try to go home to them every three or four weeks. The production team would work dates around me, and every time I got the chance to have six days clear, I'd get on a plane. Anything less than six days was disruptive - I'd have to leave as soon as they were getting used to having me around." "I can't put into words how much I missed my family when I was in LA. Even now, I feel emotional about it. It was a real test. I owe an enormous amount to Sarah. She knew I'd always wanted to work in America and when I got the chance, she said, go for it, I'll hold the fort here. In hindsight, it gave us all a wealth of opportunity, Buffy ran for seven seasons and I had the best time of my life. There were moments, though, when I thought I was insane and I would really struggle. I'd put the song Highway, Highway by Stephen Allen Davis on in my car, and just sit there and weep." And apart from that, it does make sense storytelling-wise that Buffy's mentor is not always around when she is getting older. The show is all about growth.

Oliver

Now thinking back to when Buffy is resurrected and the demons are trashing Sunnydale, she asks "is this hell?" On first watch it's a throwaway line, but now in context, she had been ripped out of Heaven and this doesn't look like the Sunnydale she left!

A few things to note with this episode: Willow lied to Tara, again. When the demon copy of Buffy said "did you slit the throat, did you pat it's head, the blood dried on your hands", Willow tells Tara that she understood the words, but not what it was talking about. Demon Buffy was obviously referencing the sacrifice of the deer. Spike had Willow figured out when Xander said "Willow wouldn't do that", and Spike replies with "Oh is that right" The Demon in mist form says to Buffy, "Or did they even give you a choice?" Demon's correct on that point, Willow specifically didn't give Buffy a choice, because she hadn't even grieved until she thought the spell had failed (once again Willow has major issues with feeling or dealing with negative emotions). Think of how Willow was last two episodes, practically ordering the rest of the scoobies that "No one is backing out". It seems fairly obvious she didn't even really stop to think of what was truly right for Buffy, beyond just wanting to get her friend back (and it could be extrapolated that then she didn't need to go through any sort of grief process herself). Willow having the arrogance to have expected Buffy to thank her the moment she got back. Like seriously just be glad you have your friend back, even if you did rip her out heaven to do it. As Spike said, there are all consequences to magic.

Claire Eyles

To add on, they have no reason to believe that the dimension you go to when you die is based on how good of a person you were. They have never encountered a creature from a heavenly dimension, so they might not even know that such dimensions exist.

Lime Pie

I think of the Buffy dance as Xander's snoopy dance lol

Michael Short

Numfar, do the dance of joy!

Jonathan Hall

I don't think they thought she was in hell because she deserved it. I think they thought she could be there because she died in the portal that went to a lot of demon dimensions like the one Glory was from, which was described as a hell dimension.

Jonathan Hall

When the first thing the person you resurrected does is try to kill themself, it's never a good sign. It seems as if getting a taste of heaven is like taking the most powerful drug times ten. She may be having some serious withdrawal symptoms for a while.

Bud Haven

Jules, you made it longer than I usually do before reaching for the tissues during the final Buffy/Spike scene. It has been a long while since I first watched this episode but I definitely remember being sceptical, as were you, that Buffy would have been in Hell. After all, 'Death was her Gift', not her punishment. Oh, wonderful, you think everything will be peachy keen, Jim-dandy, hunky-dory, and just plain fine for the next two seasons. 🀣🀣 What show have you been watching???? 🀨🀨

David Schmidt

Yay! Buffy's back :D *does the Buffy dance*
