Doctor Who 5x1 The Eleventh Hour - CLEAN
Added 2024-07-24 21:00:10 +0000 UTCEverything is.... new. Different. New Doctor, New logo, New theme, New FEEL. I don't know if it's just me but it FEELS so different, and I will say that I think this is a good thing. Especially for people like me, who were SO enamoured with David Tennant and also Catherine Tate. If it had the same FEEL, maybe it would be harder to form a connection with our new Doctor. Maybe I think too much!
But, I do like that it's different. It helps, if that makes sense.
I do try not to carry across my feelings for pasts Doctors and I try to embrace and welcome our new Doctor and companion to the best of my ability each time. I have no doubt that in time I will adore the Eleventh Doctor as well, and he will come to mean just as much to me. To be honest, I did sort of have a little thought (selfish, I know) that maybe I won't be as emotionally attached to the Eleventh Doctor so I might not cry as much in series 5 and beyond. That's just me wanting to not be crying ALL the darn time like I have been 😅🥲
I.... like him. I've never seen him before, Mr Matt Smith, but he seems sweet and... nice? If I can say that. He's funny, quirky, kind, thoughtful. A really good start, I think.

By the end of the episode I completely accepted Matt as the Doctor. This series 5 ended up being my favourite out of them all. Plus also it introduces my favourite Doctor, TARDIS interior, and opening sequence.

2024-07-26 03:46:57 +0000 UTCBar some little bits of sexism throughout the episode, it was a really strong introduction to a Doctor I think! A bold fresh start with a new cinematic-y feel. The word of this series that you'll probably come to associate most with is "fairytale", this series tries to capture the feeling of reading a storybook as a kid. There's some wonderful character moments to come, Amy is a fantastic character who I have come to love a lot more in recent years with some time to move on from losing characters like Rose, Martha and Donna. She's cheeky, fiery, but with a gleeful childlike heart at times. I'm not a big fan of Steven Moffats chauvinism at times which does sadly leech into the wonderfully paragon and heroic character of the Doctor as his self insert character.. but thankfully, it can mostly be overlooked due to the strength of the acting, writing and direction. There's a fantastic youtube video that goes into great depth about the history of women in Doctor Who by a youtuber called Verilybitchie who does a good roundup if anyone wants a rundown of what I'm getting at. (Does contain hefty spoilers for this series and possibly the next, one beyond so perhaps best watched later or only if you've seen the show before!)

I vividly remember watching this on a DVD player with my brother, and laughing at the Doctor trying a whole bunch of different foods (I have also tried Fish Fingers and Custard, your description of "probably quite nice" is genuinely 100% accurate, they are nice, but even as you're eating them your brain goes "what the fuck are you doing") I was the same age as young Amy when I first watched this episode, and I loved the Doctor from the first second I saw him. Especially that moment when he tells Amy that "everything's gonna be fine", because you could tell he wasn't saying it like the other adults, he was empathising with her.

A - It's not your duty to do anything of the kind. It should be your duty to make good Doctor Who. That's it. That's all the audience cares about. Periodically, Doctor Who must change a lot because that's what it does best. It doesn't survive change, it survives because of change So occasionally, often coincidently with the change of showrunner, you have to sort of wrench things around a bit. I know I didn't go into Doctor Who thinking that this was the perfect time for a massive change. But the fact was, Julie, Russell and Phil were leaving, David and Catherine were leaving, everything was changing. All we could do, the best way to conceal that level of change was to change everything. Do you know what mean? If everything changed, it looks like a bold, new decision and a new era. It was frankly. if David and Catherine had wanted to continue I wouldn't have done that. It would have been the same TARDIS because there was no way that version of the show was worn out.

2024-07-25 11:08:41 +0000 UTCThis is 100% true. Moffat's Tennant version was landing in Amelia's garden before full regeneration & she would help him back into the TARDIS, he would fly away. Amy would then meet up with the 10th Doctor when she grew up but he would have no idea who she was because we eventually find out that was The Doctor from the future she met as a child! S5 would 100% have been David's last!

Interesting. As pairings go, 10 and Donna are my absolute favourites but 12 and all their companions are absolutely perfect character/relationship arcs. No disrespect for the others (incl. 13 onwards) though.

2024-07-25 09:53:54 +0000 UTCI had the hardest time deciding between 10 and 11 as my favorite doctor. The problem is that we tend to rate Doctor/Companion pairs, rather than each individually. I ultimately realized that I liked David Tennant more than Matt Smith, but I like Karen Gillan more than Catherine Tate. 10, 11 and 12 are all great, so I can easily see other's choosing differently. Interesting fact: Steve Moffat tried to get David Tennant to stay on as the Doctor for season 5, and David Tennant seriously considered it. I think the combination of Karen and David would have been incredible!

2024-07-25 07:35:00 +0000 UTCYou've had new Doctors, you've had new companions, but this is the first time you've had a new Doctor AND companion. Usually there's one constant to bridge the gap. It definitely is a big change, but there is one constant, one bridge between what's come before, and season 5, and that is Murray Gold and his score. There were familiar themes in here that have been used for Tennant and general excitement building. Oh and I'm truly happy that you didn't recognise Karen Gillan. She's become very well known in the Marvel universe (and also Jumanji) which has made her very recognisable among reactors, that they know instantly she's someone important (and not just a random police woman). It was refreshing to see you react to it the way we all did the first time. I felt the same way "wait is that grown up Amelia or not?" You've got lots of great adventures to come, but it's Doctor Who, you already knew that.

As much as I loved Tennant and, at the time, was unsure about Matt Smith, this episode was amazing and proved my doubts utterly unfounded. You're right about everythiing feeling new and as others have said, it is all new, but at the same time you can still see The Doctor doing his thing. The writing shines here and over the next few episodes as we learn the subtle differences with this new incarnation. Great stuff as always Jules. Cya next week <3

I love both styles and doctors equally, and actually this is the doctor that I grew up with in a way, I had seen older episodes here and there, but Matt was the first doctor I watched as the episodes aired. I have since re-watched seasons 1-10 so many times that it all feels familiar to me now. You are going to love this era I can tell, and don't you worry, the tears will not go away...

Pretty much describing every era of the show as a "virtual time capsule for british television". A show that is constantly rebuilding itself every half a decade.

I prefer David, but Matt does manage to maintain the quirkiness and compassion that David had while bringing something new. I look forward to seeing your reactions to the rest of this Doctor. And I won’t spoil anything, but you should expect somethings that first appeared in David’s time to make a return.

The female Prisoner Zero is played by Olivia Colman who will go to star in numerous wonderful TV shows and in 2018 pick up the Best Actress Oscar for The Favourite. Patrick Moore was a well known amateur atrologist who gained world renown over his lifetimes work and helped NASA map the moon for the Apollo 11 mission. He was a beloved TV celebrity in the UK and presented the BBC's The Sky at Night series for over 40 years. Go glad you loved this episode, can't wait for the rest of your journey with the 11th Doctor!

He's been in a dozen movies and productions. FWIW Tennant didn't transfer well to Hollywood and has only played in a couple bit parts here and there. Karen has done quite well too.

That being said: 11 is also brilliant, he really is. The new feel is a good thing, imo not better than series 1-4 but with other strengths. Storytelling will be a little bit more confusing but there are wonderful episodes ahead. Oh just you wait...

Just a head’s up, before watching episode 2, there’s a very short mini episode to watch called “Meanwhile in the Tardis 1”. The second minisode (Meanwhile in the Tardis 2) will be watched a few episodes later in the season.

The 11th Doctor, and especially, the 12th Doctor are my favorites (I love all the Doctors, but those two are my favorites). And this series, along with series 4 and 9, are my favorites, so I am really excited that you are here now. The chemistry between Matt Smith and Karen Gillian is sensational (even in behind the scenes videos you can see they are having such a great time).
