Buffy 5x14 Crush Reaction

OMG OMG OMG

Sorry, I'll try to calm down 🀣 What an amazing episode! I am such a fan of this season. We know the characters so well by now, we love and adore them, and that feeling just heightens everything. My goodness, I'm happy.

Rewatch update: I'm at season 4, episode 18! Soon I'll be watching that funky final episode of Season 4 and might pick up on a few more things that I didn't know at the time.

Buffy 5x14 Crush Reaction

Comments

Exactly! In my original comment, I said the same about Joyce asking Buffy if she led him on. I know it came from a place of genuine concern, and it made Buffy say the bit about hitting him. But yes, very true on all accounts.

Melanie

Hmm, I think it makes sense that Buffy was so repulsed; Spike has spent years trying to kill her, after all. It would be very jarring to be faced with that type of change of heart, and it's not like he's reformed. Considering the split with Riley making her think there was something wrong with her and even Joyce here asking if she "lead him on"! (Ironically, I do think her antagonism towards him has fueled his desire since that is his "love language" so to speak.)

Mo

I like that you mentioned how, on rewatch, you miss how Riley and Buffy used to be. I think people consider it a mischaracterization that they broke up, but it makes sense to me. He replaced his main purpose in life - the Initiative - with Buffy. But Buffy isn't currently in a place where she needs him, not the way he wants her to need him. He's not my favorite character, but I'm annoyed that people try to alter your perspective on the show. That's why I watch! I love your empathy for all the characters, even the villains sometimes, lmao. And yes, I'd say that Spike is super interesting (and handsome!) but he's NOT someone who Buffy could ever love. But he clearly loves her, in his own twisted way (Remember how he got Drusilla back? "I'm gonna find her, tie her up, and torture her until she loves me again!")

nataly

True. I'm always fascinated when I hear other people's opinions on shows. I only watch one other reactor for shows, and both him and Juliette point out things I never even considered, noticed, or connected. It feels like I'm watching the shows through a different lens, and it's fun! I don't judge other people's opinions on characters. I may share my own in some cases, but it's always a light-hearted discussion for me. Unless I haven't had enough food or I'm tired, then my comments may not have enough explanation and come off as abrupt which I don't ever mean for them to lol.

Melanie

Very much agree with you, Melanie!

Juliette Gaming

I do agree with that. Spike's an interesting character for sure, and he adds a mixture of comedy and chaos to the series that wouldn't be the same without him. I love Angel and Buffy together because they were each one of a kind β€” her the only Slayer, him the only vampire with a soul; they understood the loneliness being the "only one in the world" kinda thing. It made sense that they would be drawn to each other in that respect. I do love Spike though. He may be toxic, but he's fun πŸ˜‚

Melanie

Sweet Tooth! I can't wait to see how they wrap the story up in this upcoming final season (and many thanks to you for turning me on to it in the first place!)

Neil Hanson

Yeah, I have noticed there's a LOT of polarising comments during this season. A lot of people disagree in the comments about Riley and take his side of things. It's interesting seeing how divided the community can be. As for Spike, I don't know if I'd really want to see him together with Buffy in a relationship but I like him very much as a character and his feelings for Buffy is very exciting and interesting for me. I think he genuinely cares for Buffy, and we've seen that genuine care and feelings of love displayed a few times now. I get why some people don't like him, but I'm a fan πŸ₯°

Juliette Gaming

I'm still a Buffy/Angel gal but I think it's because I like Spike's character that it just becomes interesting and exciting for me. I've said a few times that I don't think they'd be together and I don't even want that to happen haha it's just weirdly fascinating!

Juliette Gaming

I haven't actually! I don't rewatch many of my own episodes but I think that's a cool idea to go back to an OLD episode and see haha

Juliette Gaming

I totally get that about the spoilers! I'm the same when I'm talking about shows to others. I don't want to say the wrong thing, and my foot often lives in my mouth at the best of time haha 🀣

Juliette Gaming

She's something, isn't she πŸ₯° I almost don't mind she's incredibly evil haha

Juliette Gaming

I actually just now watched the second last episode of season 4 so I think you are right, Neil 🀣 with the next season of Sweet Tooth coming out soon, I might be focused on that for a bit so I may be okay hehe πŸ’œ

Juliette Gaming

I wish people who watched reactors allowed them to feel however they feel about characters. That is, after all, the point of watching someone react. Spike is very much being a vampire in what he considers love.

nataly

That's true. Spike is a walking red flag for many reasons, and the few "good" things he's done, he's expected something in return, like praise or acknowledgement. Even his speech towards the end is him refusing to take any responsibility for his actions and blaming the women in his life instead of admitting that HE could be the one that's doing something wrong lol. But hey, chip or not, he's a soulless vampire, so being a walking red flag is kinda expected I guess πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Melanie

I've always had problems with the fascination with a Buffy/spike coupling. Spike is an obsessive stalker. He's taken pieces of her clothing, he's built a shrine, he's even built a dummy Buffy. obsession is not love. It's an act of violence and selfishness.

Mark Sahba

Are you also rewatching your thoughts on former episodes? I think it must be interesting in hindsight.

Oliver

You are right to note the conversation about The Hunchback of Notre Dame between Willow, Tara and Buffy as foreshadowing the Spike and Buffy relationship. It is a very superficial similarity. I am not sure where the love triangle with the Bishop, hanging of Esmeralda, and Quasimodo dying in the fire come in though. But the singing gargoyles in the very sanitized Disney version were cute.

David Schmidt

I just realised that Buffy lets a few vampires go in this episode. Maybe they didn't have the budget for the dusting, or the episode would have went on for too long with the added fights. Or, maybe Buffy didn't want to risk fights when Glory is out there, because if something happens to her, then Dawn will basically be left unprotected. I don't want to put too much here. I also deleted my last comment because I wasn't sure if it was classed as a spoiler (even though it was in this episode). I'm never sure what to put or how much to say in the comments about the current episode which is why I rarely leave them πŸ˜‚

Melanie

DRUSILLA!!! I know we recently saw her on Angel, but it really is such an amazing treat to have her back on Buffy for this episode (in present day, not a flashback). I love her and this episode so much.

Britney

I have to agree, this really is such an amazing episode! Juliette, if you're not careful your rewatch will actually overtake your first-time viewing and could result in breaking time as we currently know it! (Don't question my logic, it makes perfect sense! πŸ˜‚) I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this one. Have an awesome weekend Juliette.
