Buffy - Witch S1 E3 - Full Reaction
Added 2023-02-15 03:00:02 +0000 UTC
Here is the next episode! I really loved this one. I enjoy stories that keep me guessing (even better when I manage to get them right!), so this one had that lovely element to it.
It is wonderful to see Buffy do "normal teenage things" as I know she SO wants a regular life. I can't imagine how upside down her life has become as a slayer when all she would want to do is hang out with her friends, date, and have fun.
I have some things to work on improving as we go forward! This includes...
* Starting to record an intro for you guys with a countdown! For example, "Get ready to press play on one. Four, three, two, one."
* remembering these videos will become full reactions! So for me not to cough or fiddle around when the intro screens are on!
* trying my best not to pause... which is HARD as I've been so used to pausing and talking through my thoughts with Firefly! If I do pause to do that, I need to work out a way to leave those parts in/cut them out without it disturbing the watch a long. Any tips on that very welcome!
I hope you enjoy 💜
When reactors manage to be completely wrong, but totally right at the same time.
I love when this happens. :D

I actually prefer to watch with subtitles! I had comments to have NO subtitles so ever since that, any reactions I watch without. I never used to watch with subtitles in my younger years, but I just prefer it these days.
Thank you for your lovely words! I do often feel a lot of pressure to do everything and I definitely will slow down soon and take a little break once I've finished Cyberpunk on the gaming channel. Keeping up with two channels can be tricky, but it keeps me busy and I'm NEVER bored 🤣

Perhaps an idea is to watch with subtitles - that could help with picking up dialogue even when you're commenting. Although as others have said missing a line isn't the end of the world.
It sounds like you're putting in a lot of time to edit everything - and Buffy fans can be a ravenous lot, always asking for more. Please don't feel like you need to spend more time than you can handle. No job is worth your wellbeing.
By the way, someone might have already mentioned this but you seem to be watching the "HD" version. This version has quite a few issues with colour grading and bad cropping.
As for the episode, this is a really good one. Something that a lot of reactors miss is that the title is _witch_, not _the witch_ - a play on "which", very apropos for the episode.

Thank you, Neil 💜 I got so excited and emotional during Firefly that sometimes I just couldn't shut up 🤣

Thank you for letting me know, Bud 🤗 I'll try my best not to but it's good to know that it's okay on the odd occasion!

I do often feel pressure to get content out and recorded but you're right again 🤭 I need to be in good health to really enjoy it! I'm hoping I'll be better soon as it's just a head cold so nothing too serious. Thank you for all your help 💜

That was my thought too, the annoyance of resyncing. I'll see how I go with not pausing to talk. When I've been doing that in Firefly, I just edit that out and match up the footage so it's seamless.

Oh, I agree with you! I prefer it with full video and full audio as well but unfortunately it's just not legal. A lot of the big reactors I admire and follow have the blurred and no audio reactions due to legal reasons as well. It's just not worth the risk 😞

It would make it quite difficult, really. Personally, I'm still for including the actual footage and sound, like other reactors do. I understand your hesitance, but as long as the full reactions stay on Patreon, it should be fine after all – and is for the other reactors.

It's cool with me if you pause occasionally Juliette, re-syncing only takes a few seconds so it's not a problem as far as I'm concerned. Plus, if you have a few sentences you want to say (or have a laugh/cry) and don't pause, you could end up talking over important dialogue and missing things.

Most Buffy episodes tend to fall into one of two categories, ones that advance the overall plot of the season and ones like this one that fans lovingly call "Monster of the Week" episodes. MotWs tend to be a little more light-hearted and fun although they often have a lot of great character stuff in them, Xander giving Buffy the bracelet, the stuff between Buffy and her mom, and often have some very relatable theme for teen viewers, in this case the pressures that kids and parents face trying to relate to each other.
Each episode is a wild ride, you'll enjoy almost every single one I'm sure.

I'm really enjoying your reactions. If you need to pause occasionally I personally don't have a problem getting back in sync.

Thank goodness for the double reverse plot twist, you were all-in on the mother as the guilty party. Phew!😅

I think a lot of folk (including myself sometimes) either forget or don't consider that you have to basically watch the episode a second time anyway as you edit and you'll pick anything you might have missed. And there's nothing wrong with just saying you don't understand something, or perhaps feel like there was something you might have missed. That's what the comments section is for, as long as everyone is careful about spoilers of course.
I'm sure there are people who feel differently, but I really dislike having to re-sync at any point. I have no problem with the watch-along format as it is but getting and staying synced is the one big hurdle we need to overcome and I don't really see a reason to invite that if we can avoid it. Again, just my opinion is all.
I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Hopefully it doesn't last long, but if it does don't feel you have to record on our account if you're not up to it. Always take care of yourself first and if you're not feeling well you probably won't enjoy watching/recording as much anyway. Can't wait for the next one, whenever that works out to be👍

I LOVED THAT TOO! Keeping me guessing is something I very much enjoy! I wouldn't have suspected that the mother took over Amy's body. THAT was very cool. When I watched it back during editing, I noticed that "Amy" trash talked her dad which was a dead giveaway upon reflection 🤣

Ahhh thank you!! I think that's been my thoughts, too. I haven't been stopping to pause and talk it out during Buffy and I do try to sneak in thoughts between words. Like you mentioned, I am conscious of missing dialogue! Sometimes I will rewind to listen to what I may have missed, and then edit it back together so nothing was lost so that has been working well too.
On the occasion that I am breaking down, sobbing, like I was a few times in Firefly, it will work better for me to pause in those moments as I am very emotionally traumatised BUT I haven't *not* paused in those moments, if that makes sense. I was thinking of the Serenity movie (I won't say what part due to spoilers if someone hasn't seen) and I had to pause when I was upset. For those that saw it at the cinema, they didn't have that opportunity to do that. They just had to keep going. MAYBE that's a better option? I may give that a try next time the waterworks start!
Also if I do miss something, I usually pick it up in editing as I have to edit twice now as well so really, I'm watching the episodes three times 🤭
Thank you so much for your encouragement! I'm so excited to keep going and learn more along the way. I am sick at the moment so I'm a bit annoyed as I'm not sure if I'll be okay to watch another episode on Friday 😫

I loved your reaction to this one. Seeing you see saw between it being Amy and her Mother was so good when you finally realised it was the mother. :) Cordelia is great, she is a mean girl, but she offers such good comedic relief. I prefer not to pause during a reaction, however I do have one other reactor I watch who does successfully handle it, when he needs to pause he will say "Pausing in 3....2...1" and then recount in to start again.

I had no reason to complain about any of your Firefly reactions in regards to you talking over stuff, I've had no reason to complain with any of the Buffy reactions so far. You've done as well as anyone else I follow in that regard. You're fine, keep doing what you're doing imo

I don't mean to contradict y'all, but I feel like the answer is that pausing doesn't really work if you're doing watch-along. It's more than a bit of a pain in the butt for us to pause and re-sync along with you and you're probably better off just learning to sneak in the commentary during pauses in dialogue. It's probably not easy at first but you'll get the hang of it eventually. There's only one other reactor I follow who pauses to comment and while it's a nice bonus the others all do just fine with commenting as they go.
Folks get really worked up about you potentially missing even a single line but I feel like that's a little unrealistic. You're going to miss the occasional thing and we both just need to make our peace with that. And besides, that's what you have us for, to help explain things along the way either just clarification or if you missed it while commenting on something else. Nobody picks up on every single thing their first watch-through.
Pausing to comment works with a non watch-along format with just the embedded video but once if you're going with watch-along then that kinda goes out the window.

Sure! That works, or whatever works for you. If you're crying you can count down 3 fingers. lol. Because trust me, Sara Michelle Gellar (Buffy) is one of the best criers ever. I'm normally too macho to cry, But on one of those rare occasions when Buffy cries? I cry. It's so humiliating.

Thank you!! That makes me feel better. How would that work with the watch along? If I do pause to talk (or cry haha) would I then say something like "pressing play in 3, 2, 1" once I am finished with the pause?

Honestly, paused commentary is perfectly fine. Much better than talking over the dialogue, So please by all means, feel free to comment your reactions to your heart's content. We love hearing your thoughts, and we know how to use a fast-forward button. 😃
