Apocalypse Now (1979)

The boyz discuss Apocalypse Now.

Comments

Having watched all three, I think The Final Cut is the best version. Keeps the essential elements from the eerie plantation set piece and cuts out the pretty fun (but unnecessary) extra playmate stuff.

Daniel

So an mst3k page mentions that Joe Estevez fills in for Martin after the heart attack on several iconic shots. Including the mud rise… Loved the episode, did not hear this discussed. Any input as to whether this is true or not?

Andre P

You guys should just deactivate comments altogether, not just in the discord. Nothing worthwhile has ever been written here.

Pumpkin Pie Hair-Cutted Freak

This movie and episode rules. You guys should read “the cia guy” Jerry Zeismars book Ready When You Are. It’s a great book about filmmaking from an Assistant Directors perspective and has lots of great stories. He was the 1st AD on this and many other huge movies and is a hero to those of us in Production.

Parker “the one and only fresh pot” Gibbs

Rest in piss ABZ Discord. I was so excited to have other people with similar tastes in movies and comedy to talk with (and occasionally hear from the hosts as a nice bonus) but instead it turned into a platform for a handful of psychos and bullies to air their own opinions while shutting everyone else down. Such a bummer. Really excited about the new Zombie Squad features though! I’m sure you guys will eventually watch the GI Joe miniseries that was also a pilot for the cartoon (where Snake Eyes is more of a Harpo Marx-esque physical comedy character breakdancing and miming), really looking forward to that if you get to it.

Justin Paul Strong

Oh cool thank you so much for the recommendation!

Would like to know if Stanger ended up getting Rick Baker: Metamorphosis. It sucks that Rinzler died pretty young because his books are always well-researched and engaging with awesome photos. Looking forward to hearing Rodgers' thoughts on the HBO Stax documentary inevitably on an upcoming pod. I watched the first episode with my ten-year-old and he dug it - incredibly well-made.

Sarah Tippishly

In J.W. Rinzler's (R.I.P.) excellent The Making of Star Wars book, he mentions that Apocalypse Now was originally Lucas' passion project, to be shot from the perspective of the Viet Cong, if I'm not mistaken. When nobody went for it, he decided to make a kids' movie with the anticolonial elements he had in mind when drafting Apocalypse Now. There were tons of iterations and diversions before Star Wars was made, but since the movies are my only frame of reference I can only imagine Lucas' A.N. as the plot of Star Wars transposed to Vietnam, which would've been really weird to watch in the 70s.

Sarah Tippishly

Because of all the music I listened to in the 90’s, I know chunks of dialogue from movies like this by heart. This song sampled the whole “good and evil” speech from the beginning of the film. I knew this bit of dialogue long before I ever saw the move. https://youtu.be/DmHwUIIcJ7o?si=jnUsd3MKXLLMzWJH

This probably isn't the place to ask for technical help, but I'm trying to listen via RSS using the Podcast Addict app, and no matter what I do I still can't get my much older sister to admit she's my real mom. Do I need to Override Global Player settings to fix this?

Quint Essential

I can't believe that I'm going to watch 3 different versions of a long ass movie in one week. This has been an awesome deep dive.

william o'connor

Would love to see a universe where Apocalypse Now got straight to video sequels like Starship Troopers, following Willard. Apocalypse Now 2: Apocalypse Next

Nolan-Globus

The "sleazy emcee" that introduces the Playboy bunnies is Bill Graham who was THE concert promoter of his time. He owned Winterland, the venue for The Last Waltz

Schifrin's List

Excellent episode gentlemen. Only thing I missed was having Stanger give a shout out to the Dp. In this case it’s the legend Vittorio Storaro. He’s always been one of my favs and he’s one of the rare dps that totally revolutionized cinematography (i.e. The Conformist). A.N. represents the pinnacle achievement of every department but as far as cinematography goes…one of the all time greats. Unfortunately Storaro peaked out big time on Apocalypse Now. I don’t think he’s ever come close to the greatness displayed here. These days he’s obsessed with vivid colors and all his stuff looks like complete shit (ex. Bullworth, Dick Tracy and woody allen’s last 5 movies). That said, wild achievement and inspiring to this day. Perfection.

Pod Ween Satan

I’m behind on my listening but does anyone have any ABZ adjacent criterion channel suggestions? (Things that haven’t been covered but are in the same milieu?)

Frosty peaches

Two weeks…two weeks!

Pod Ween Satan

It's gotta be a CIA/spy thing to ask for something, but instead of taking a yes or no answer, offer a cigarette for the acknowledgment.

VHSMIA

I’m tired and lazy but what are the names of the books and doc they are talking about. I’m super interested and in need of this

BuffaloDave

Tom Waits met Kathleen Brennan because of One from The Heart. So it was worth it.

Bring me the Head of Warren Oates

Damn. Nailed that one. Kudos

Salmon

They really left Stang hangin’ on his symbolism takes. I thought they were all insightful and liked hearing them. Quit being mean to Stanger

Alec Ogg

IMO the only flaw in the original cut is that the deaths of Clean and Chief are too close and similar. The scene in Redux with the holdout French plantation owners (the de Marais family, literally "of the Swamp") perfectly fills the gap. I assume they are supposed to be the Lotus Eaters. It's a takedown of colonialism but it's also beautiful and romantic and totally unnecessary from a plot perspective, but I love it. Aurore Clement: smokeshow

Fantastic episode

Jason Moss

This is probably one of my all time favorite movies. I was crazy excited about the Redux version but couldn’t have been more disappointed in it. Super cool to see all the deleted scenes that you’d always known existed but hadn’t seen…that’s undeniably fun. That said the thing that kills it for me is to see Captain Willard smile. In the beginning of Redux there are a series of scenes where there’s some goofy hi-jinx and on multiple occasions Willard has a big silly grin on his face. That just feels so wrong to me. All the other kids on the boat laugh and fuck around and then there’s Willard…just brooding and full of rage with his mind focused on the mission. To see Willard laugh and smile…man it just messes the whole experience up for me.

Pod Ween Satan

My dad’s a Vietnam veteran- 1st lieutenant that also went to Hofstra for undergrad. Some say this was his war experience. They’d be wrong.

Hammerthrust Von Sexron

I podcasted about this movie myself maybe five years ago and while I'm not gonna say it made me insane, it definitely... infected my brain. I watched the theatrical version, Heart of Darkness, and Redux in the same week, which doesn't seem ridiculous if I'm going to be talking on mic about it, but the movie WOULD NOT leave my head the whole time. I just couldn't stop thinking about it, the same way you might get a catchy song in your head for five days. It wasn't until we recorded that I was able to sort of get it to stop running like a Mobius strip through my mind. Needless to say, I didn't need to rewatch it to listen to this podcast. What a great fucking movie.

John Arminio

Yup for sure and the bird bunny is notorious smoke.show Colleen Camp from Clue

PatrickKilbrogan

The French woman who gets naked is a smoke dot show. Another stunning lady in the ABZ canon, up there with James Woods' secretary from Videodrome.

David Bauer

They really said “you couldn’t pay us enough to read your opinions”

44866320I’m excited to hear about the new format for Zombie Squad. There’s an episode of MacGyver called The Ten Percent Solution where he has to break himself and a Jewish guy out of a gas chamber built by Nazis. Also, I’d love to see you guys cover Deadbeat at Dawn for the pod. It’s a blast.I’m excited to hear about the new format for Zombie Squad. Any thoughts on what blu ray version to buy? There are a few tonchoose from. Also speaking of PTSD I saw a 4k restoration of First Blood this weekend at the theatre, crowd was into it, what a movie.

Dan Skisak

First time seeing this was the Redux cut in theaters. It's one of my dad's favorite movies and took me to see it. Pretty sure I watched Full Metal Jacket around the same time.

Darryl Bowen

His are not as bad as Edward James, Almost

David McElroy

Same!

David McElroy

Pretty successful anti-semite too

Brendan Crowley

In this movie you can see the acne that resulted in Laurence Fishburne's distinctive acne scars.

Data Janitor

Stanger going from a profound character analysis of Chef and connecting that to the extinction in the wild of the tiger in Vietnam, then straight to a Tony the Tiger bit, exemplifies why I love this podcast. Amazing.

John Arminio

All day I’m going to think about McGruff trying to extract information from Commander about Buffalo Bill.

Daniel_

New Zombie Squad tier. Talk Soup Pop Up Video style show with the Boyz doing 90s reality show commentary

Salmon

Hoping they were enticed into watching the Redux, would love to hear their opinions on the extra scenes in Shadow Wolves. They have some fun monologues and a playboy bunny who is sexually attracted to birds I think.

PatrickKilbrogan

I’m obsessed with Event Horizon because the studio rushed and chopped it up because they were betting on Titanic to fail.

VHSMIA

Very helpful if you’re looking for your homeless dad down in the bayou.

VHSMIA

One vote for the scariest thing I’ve ever seen which is the MacGuyver bio lab episode where there is a leak and a woman grows a dog face.

Ron Don Volante

Also been listening to the path to paradise, and I agree that the reader is God fucking awful.

Sean

We don’t have a contest yet but this could win “comment of the year 2024” Thanks for sharing

Ryan Stanger

Ah T. S. Eliot… turns out to have been just as good a prophet, as he was a poet.

Bill Devine

1. I am an old person. Saw this at the Cinerama Dome when it first came out. Really radical for the time --no opening or closing credits. You got a paper program, like a play. Totally immersed from the first frame. 45+ years on, still the most amazing film experience ever. (Also saw The Deer Hunter at a studio pre-release screening, and it blew everyone away, but Apocalypse Now had an even greater impact.) 2. Worked with a Viet Nam vet when this came out, and asked him if it was accurate. He said the scene that was most realistic was the tiger attack. He never saw a tiger, but the shock, surprise and terror in a split second conveyed what it was like on patrol. ( Side note: He also once declined to join a workplace organized weekend camping trip, noting that he had done enough camping for a lifetime.)

Courthouse Steppes

Fuck that, I can pick-up any episode where they cover a big movie and know it's good and obviously don't gotta rewatch the movie first

bloodflart

Better use of colored smoke: Apocalypse Now or Megaforce?

Giri Busey

As long as the filmmakers are able to land a big name, like bloodflart, it should be a great watch.

Joe

I really enjoy Stanger's extra-textual close reads of the film. I hope they become a feature on films that deserve this type of analysis.

Irvin

Do you think Furiosa underperformed at the box office because so many Americans just couldn’t sit through another 2.5 hour movie after watching Apocalypse Now and Hearts of Darkness this weekend? I know that’s a big reason why I didn’t go.

David Bauer

Great episode. Recently I was listening to the earliest Shadow Wolves, that I hadn’t heard back then. And in one the guys worried aloud that they might need to avoid movies that were too good, or something like that, as there might be nothing to say about them. But I think this was a good reminder that all the enthusiasm and knowledge on a classic can be great, alongside all the weird ones.

David D.

I think of three of them, Stanger’s got the most deranged dad. I love whenever one of his dad stories comes up.

David Bauer

It’s all good - the patreon credit card is on auto renew so the boys will keep getting my filthy lucre.

K. D. Campbell

I know we don’t know each other, but I’m glad you are still here.

David D.

What about the one with G. Gordon Liddy as guest star?

Adam Ross

I got burned out on the Doors after picking The End as a death song on repeat the last time I tried to unsubscribe from life.

Love when the ABZ crew covers the movie and the doc. The Dr Moreau/Lost Soul double hit was great.

Bryan Risinger

As a listener who has yet to join zombie squad I was always morbidly curious about the discord. But I’m glad you’re moving on to something you’ll find more enjoyable

Dirk Dribbler

This episode was already great, but the TED Talk in the middle about the erotic nature of barns really elevates things.

David D.

So are these watch alongs, or will these extra episodes be in the usual format? You could probably do two extra video episodes a month that are thirty minutes a piece(or more) watching episodes of GI Joe, or infomercials(like you were discussing), and leave the long extra miscellaneous talking to Shadow Wolves.

Don Knott Steiner

I’m excited to hear about the new format for Zombie Squad. There’s an episode of MacGyver called The Ten Percent Solution where he has to break himself and a Jewish guy out of a gas chamber built by Nazis. Also, I’d love to see you guys cover Deadbeat at Dawn for the pod. It’s a blast.

Luke

Offering up this annoying correction for dear old dad Irvin Sr, 1st of the 5th Air Cavalry in Vietnam, Duvall isn't wearing a Confederate hat, he's wearing an Air Cav hat, based on the old Union Cavalry hat. RIP pops.

Irvin

Excited about the new evolution of zombie squad. Discord was too overwhelming and there was basically no risk of the boyz humiliating me directly.

Another ABz coincidence in programming, the Indy 500 was yesterday

The VR commercial stars my friend’s dad and was directed by kathryn bigelow

Don’t confuse cool with heroin- The Roach

Letron Carl

Lots of Vietnam jokes to be made with the hosts pulling out of the Discord but I’m gonna shock the world by being genuine : thanks for communicating your reasons why it was a misfire, thanks for not going full napalm with the roasting during the withdrawal, and of course thanks for an extra episode each month.

Joe B

Did the weirdest double feature of this and Starship Troopers the other day

PatrickKilbrogan

The Chevy Chase Talk Show pilot? Please?

As teen I was obsessed with Michael Herr’s Dispatches, which brought New Journalism to war reporting and was key to popularizing the concept of Vietnam as the Psychedelic War. Later I learned of Herr’s critical role in writing Willard’s narrative dialogue. Dispatches shows how it became possible to integrate the anti war views of Lucas and Coppola with the warrior mytho-poetic philosophy of Milius into a unified piece of art. https://youtu.be/4DMbq0TuSqs?si=RK1mM0QZhCntmaNN

Canadian Day Player

Fuck discord this is a way better idea, long live the new flesh

bloodflart

As a person on the discord, this is a far more exciting zombie squad development.

Dustin

Great episode and the new zombie squad format sounds pretty sweet. I’m always down for more of the Boyz

Nathan Rogers

LOVE The Rainmaker. Such a great lawyer film.

Identical Quinns

The documentary “‘Cord of Darkness” about the short-lived Action Boyz Discord will be interesting.

Don Knott Steiner

Uhh yeah, I’m gonna watch a ‘film’ by a dude named Francis. Nice try Action Boyz.

Another great book about the making of Apocalypse Now is Peter Cowie’s “The Apocalypse Now Book”. The Cinema Tyler YouTube series on AN is also worth checking out. His most recent episode is all about Hopper and the inspiration behind the character.

John King

I love this format, you should do this with Fitzcaraldo one month. I know how much you love getting programming notes!🥸

Dan

I could listen to a full 3.5 hour ep of just Stanger telling stories about his dad

Julian Neuweiler

Tiger Stripe camo > all other camo.

Adam Lane

Watching the Redux version of this at the cinema is my favourite big screen experience ever, will always defend that cut. Movie has its ups and downs, but the OST for one from the heart is also an all timer, I think Waits said he learnt how to write music in notation from Coppola. Anyways, if you see the police, Warn a Bros.

Eugenio Triana

My assumption is the original cut but if anyone can confirm...
