過重…か? (Overweight?)

It’s a bit of a reach, as 過重/ かじゅう kajū (overweight) sounds like 怪獣/かいじゅう kaijū. But in this instance, the term is more like ‘your luggage is over the excess weight limit’, than it being used for people (that’d be 太り気味 futorigimi)

Anyway, this is Yokozuner from this movie. Yokozuner’s name is a corruption of yokozuna 横綱/ よこづな or sumo grand champion. So naturally, yeah, he’d be much bigger than Steve. Interestingly, he is one of a few named characters without a speaking voice. I get the feeling he was based on a gila monster with some Kabuki-theatre style make up.

Anyway, I thought it was really cool they had different kaiju from different countries, making the wrestling thing not just in the US. Sorry this took so long, I was waiting for the artbook to arrive. I don’t know what to deem this as anything except overdue since at the time of posting, it was already March 2022. Oops.
