Poking Around Pt 95

It’s a new month, a new page and a new font for the dialogue; I wanted something that complimented the art a bit more and I think Action Man may just fit the bill for now.
There’s quite a bit of subtext coming, so please look forward to what comes next; we’ll get back to sumo bit soon enough. At least there are plenty of Translation Notes to tide you over in the meantime. Thanks again for your time and support.
TL Notes:
- “Montréal Morn”: One of my favourite Marge Simpson lines along with its follow-up.
- Dynah: A cheap pun on diner, and a portmanteau of this doll from the stop-motion 1990s tv version of this nodding doll character (she was re-designed in 2008 before being dropped entirely with the DreamWorks-produced 2018 hard reboot) and this lady. In fact, there’s quite an interesting article here, with a translation of what character designers Ken Sugimori and Yusuke Ōmura intended with the character-in-question.
- 1984/Orwell: The George Orwell novel.
- Baklava Says: a combination of a sweet pastry popular in predominantly the Middle East (but also Algeria, Greece, and Turkey), and someone who was catapulted into fame after winning a televised baking show.
- MaxShroom Soup: A reference to a key ingredient needed for a soup introduced into the DLC for a certain pair of video games. The font I used is spoofing the English typeface used for Z-moves.
- “Nighthawk”: Albert may have his in-universe explanation for the nickname, but it’s also a reference to the Edward Hopper painting of the same name. In fact, both the lady in the 3rd panel on this page (and Kuroki in the previous page) is a reference to another of Hopper’s paintings, Automat.
- “S’more about what you said”: Back in Part 28.
- Men Over Flowers: Something Tori touched upon back in Part 62. In short, the pun works better in Japanese. The actual phrase goes 花より団子 hana yori dango (Boys [Preferred] over Flowers); Kuroki altered it so it reads 花より男性 hana yori dansei (Men over Flowers).
- Men Over Flowers (2): The image itself is an amalgamation of things: a fighting video game; a video that made me very… happy; an obnoxious character with sunglasses (I was strongly reminded of him by a recent-ish film); a hybrid of this long-legged lady and this… praying mantis?; a hybrid of this spring-armed girl and this plant lady; a hybrid of this rabbit and this succubus; and lastly, this one whom I saw a lot of fan-art of last year. The winged one is supposed to be this creature.
- “You were fine with Mrs Amatan”: Did you catch that on Part 67?
- Barefoot Confessor: A pun on an American television chef.
