Poking Around Pt 82

There’s an air of finality on this page because not only is it the closer for this little introductory arc (poll coming up next page), but I happened to finish drawing this 11pm New Year’s Eve 2019 so it could be scheduled to be posted first thing 2020 (UK-time). EDIT: Reuploaded to fix a few typos. This is why I need a proofreader.
Again, thank you so very much to everyone for funding this comic throughout 2019. I hope this arrangement continues throughout next year.
Without further ado, the TL Notes (much shorter than the previous page!):
- “Mild(ly) Good End”: Phonetically spoofing the sci-fi novel Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke (best known for co-screenwriting 2001: A Space Odyssey), which details a peaceful alien invasion and a resultant transcendent evolution of the human race. It also happens to be the title for one of my favourite episodes of the anime RahXephon.
- “Murkcrowin’ like a Parliament”: A group of crows can be called a parliament. A Murkrow is this.
- “Cloud cuckoo land”: an old fashioned phrase that in modern times denotes someone very strange by conventional standards of the time, saying or doing things that would only make sense to themselves. It’s also a level in the video game, Banjo-Tooie.
- Gengaraugh Ó Tagahamé: A corruption of Gengar, my attempt at an Irish-sounding name and the gay manga artist Gengoroh Tagame, best known in certain circles for his 2-part work My Brother’s Husband getting an official English translation and publication. Fair warning, Tagame’s other works aren’t quite as… wholesome as My Brother’s Husband.
- “You Are All Going to…”: They’re supposed to be the three pixies of the Shinnoh Lakes, but also a very covert reference to the Red Queen in the first American Resident Evil movie… what, did you think it was something else?
- “If You Not Stan”: A reference to the how K-pop fans (predominantly female) identify who they like to support on Twitter (not to be confused with JoJo's Bizarre Adventure stands, which are superpowers basically); apparently lifted from the early 2000s song Stan by Eminem about a very obsessive fan. I guess they “re-appropriated” the term?
- “I heard someone once say…”: a direct quote from the late 90s/early 2000s animated satire Daria in a rather touching scene. In a series first for the Season 4 finale, the titular teenager deliberately seeks out her mother for some life advice, and her mother opts for outright honesty: adults have no more control over life than children do and that message touched me very deeply indeed.
And that’s it. Happy New Year, people. And thanks again. 🎉
