Update: Space Westerns

Hey everyone. Glad people are enjoying the newest random anime review. But with this next one I want to do something a little different.

I've personally loved Space Westerns for a long time. They're some of my favorite shows, and have been really influential as a genre. And yet when I look online for discussion of them, I don't seem to find much. So I think I want to make something that covers the history and influence of the Space Western.

I want the video to be shorter. Not only because I promised myself I'd have it out before the end of the month, but because I want it to be concise. After a 50 minute video that was almost double that, I think I want to challenge myself to be able to express everything in less time. And with something like this, where the video has one clear focus, I think it should be possible.

The script is currently ~1000 words in. I want it to be less than 4000 by the final draft. And I want it to just be a brief history, a talk about why the genre works and is influential, and then a discussion of the reasons Space Westerns aren't made that much today.

So if you like the genre or don't, I wanna hear why, to get more perspective. Though honestly the only thing not solidified in my mind is the title. I've got a few ideas I'll lay out here:

Like I said, pretty simple. Let me know what you think.

Again, I'm super stoked for this video! I can't wait to know your thoughts and experiences. I grew up on space westerns and the thing that appealed to me the most was that the story telling was VERY immersive. Space westerns do a very good job at making fantasy seem so real. There's also a special philosophy it teaches about living your best life despite the struggles. The world building around space has always captivated me and getting to know a gruffy team of unique characters made the experience all the more fun and exciting. I mean, there's something so badass (and oddly relatable) about gun slinging, android shooting, ship busting, booze guzzling, mercenaries just trying to pay their rent. I wish there were more space westerns now cause new animation technology can make it even more compelling. The visuals are just as important as the story and sometimes more important than any dialogue. Watching the ash of a cigarette fall off as it panels up to a grandiose shot of stars and watercolor purples, is beautiful and leaves a lasting impression. Space westerns left a huge impact on me as a kid and even to this day, I go back to those shows for comfort and inspiration.

I love this idea! Space westerns are an excellent blending of genres that go so well together. I mean, the DNA of westerns is all over the roots of sci-fi. Battlestar Galactica literally has a wild west shootout scene in one of its episodes, Han Solo was a Kirk Douglas inspired cowboy, Buck Rogers etc. Living in a time with such rapidly evolving technology and society, mixed with a frontier just waiting to be trailblazed, westerns and sci-fi play off each other's strengths. I'm really looking forward to this one
