Willow S1E06 Watch Along

Hey Peaches! We're back with Willow and the gang. When last we left our small band of would be heroes they were attacked by Trolls. Kit and Willow were captured, and the rest of the party attempts to rescue them. What follows is one of the best episodes of the show.....until the end. Odd story structure, surprise actors, and subverted expectations (in a good way) abound!

Hey thanks! Yeah i'm just wondering have people not watched Buffy, ATLA, or read Percy Jackson? Episode 5 was all so much of what made Buffy great. And with 6-8, everything may not always make sense 100% of the time but as long as the character arcs are jiving and honored, as long as it's fun, that's a great time for me! It's an added bonus that there's so many cool mythic elements and symbolism in the storytelling

Exceptionally well said, Jamie! I’ve been having this same discussion with friends elsewhere, about the quirks and weirdness of the original film and how the series is doing exactly what it should to follow in those footsteps. Of particular consternation to so many people is the music, and as you’ve said here I’ve been pointing out that this series is FAR from the first fantasy epic to use counterintuitive music cues. I personally love it. And I too am eagerly awaiting the reaction vids to episode 7 AND 8, both of which I was very happy with.

I’m hoping they finish this show was great the last two episodes blew me away

Are you guys not reacting to the rest of the season? Was waiting to binge watch it with your videos. But understand if yinz are not totally onboard and you may have higher priority series that could take it's place.

Hey guys! I've been a big fan of your stuff for a while now. To answer your question, here's my take on the show, which I'm really loving so far. The original film was definitely a fun, lighthearted, and imaginative adventure romp, but it also has many elements that fall into full blown, freaky (occasionally scary) bizarro-camp. It's not Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. Willow is, and has always been, WEIRD. So the necessary tone isn't just lighthearted and fun with levity, it's got to also feel a bit offbeat. In my opinion, this show has evolved some of that more seriously off-putting weirdness into a more palatable self-awareness that feels like an incredibly similar vibe to Avatar the Last Airbender, which I think was a good choice. The music, the jokes, the polite trolls, the now-we're-friends with the bone reavers, etc. all play a part in that and I think that's a good thing. It feels very Disney and like a fairytale, while also feeling as quirky as the original Willow. As far as the music, I don't have a problem with it at all, I think it's fun. Willow is FAR from the first fantasy/period/genre show to use modern music and I like it because it adds directly to the slightly discordant vibe it's going for while also adding to the story and themes and serving as emotional cues for each scene it's used in. However, the show as a whole takes itself seriously enough to truly invest in the characters and their hero's journeys, and cares about seeing them through and developing everyone. So from my perspective, the best way to enjoy this show is to understand that it's weird intentionally and try to embrace it! :) As Im typing this you guys haven't posted episode 7 yet, but I really enjoyed it and I'm excited for the finale. I'm so glad you both decided to keep watching!

happy you caved on watching Wednesday! But I kind of wish you caved on "the sandman" because I think it is more up alley. But I will take what I can get

I was debating mentioning it to them, but I figured they've probably had it requested plenty by now and I know how busy they are but I agree, I think they'd LOVE Wednesday :)

Since you guys brought up the notion of why the show doesn't click and pointing out moving the story along and having multiple mysteries. Please consider doing a reaction to Wednesday, it is an example of doing all that right playing with a couple mystery elements and answering questions as you are asking them except of the bigger mysteries it is leading you toward. I get how it might not be something you would gravitate to, but I don't see you not liking the show. A lot of reactors are coming around to watching it and I haven't seen a disappointed reactor yet. It might be a good compare and contrast with Willow in terms of story-telling. Also, its not like new Sabrina or Riverdale or any of those shows that are dark and humor is not a priority. Wednesday hits a better balance of dark comedy that is more kooky than spooky and only a couple moments throughout the season of being ooky.

I'll be interested to see what they do with the girl at the end. Everybody is jumping to the Crone which means it may be too obvious, but then, nonobviety is not necessarily what this show is about. It would be interesting if they were playing on the idea of Maiden, Mother, Crone (a motif also played with in Sandman when he visits the Fates). Given they cut to Good Vibrations she could be an opposite equal possible ally. But that would leave out the Mother unless Sorsha is the Mother. I doubt the show has that much depth. But, it would be an interesting misdirect.

What's not "clicking" for me is the editing of this show. Both the structural editing from scene to scene, and the continuity from shot to shot, takes me out of the episode. Characters often pop up on the screen when they were standing on the other side of the room the shot before. There's often times where it feels like parts of a scene are missing, and they've tried to cover it up with some off-screen ADR. Maybe they didn't get all the coverage they needed for every scene? Maybe they were re-working the story through the edit? Either way, it's very sloppy.

I AM UPSET lol my worldview is crushed — my family has always said “I learned from watching YOU” since I can remember (I’m 25yo now and I’m the youngest of 3) and I just thought it was an ‘us’ thing for some reason, not a reference. & then using it around my peers no one else would know the reference apparently because no one ever said anything !! Guys, I just don’t know why so many people have a problem with the (mostly) credits music. This is far from the first fantasy/historical/period film or show to use anachronistic music, and I simply don’t feel like it’s as jarring or tonally disruptive as many fans are making it out to be. The voice of Madmartigan was provided by Kilmer’s son, Jack, who also did VO work for him in his biopic VAL. And his appearance (in quotes) here leads into my theory for how Mads could be more fully integrated into the story… I believe there’s an element of time travel at play here. The young woman in the cage at the end of the episode is likely the Crone, or possibly Fin Raziel, but at a much earlier age. The Immemorial City exists out of time, or maybe back in time. And at some point, I imagine, I HOPE, that Jack Kilmer will be brought in to play a younger version of Madmartigan. He’s almost exactly the same age as Dempsey Bryk, who plays Airk, and I think it would be gun to see Young Mad pal around with his future son.

Pretty sure the whole “fight trolls in the dungeon” thing came from the old NES game from back in the day…

Jason Marbach

Her hair got a streak of red in it after episode 4 when she saved Flash. Was wondering if you guys noticed it.

Tay Schumaker

The voice of MadMartigan was Val Kilmer's actual son
