The episodes after Susan died were darker, slicker, and more outlandish and absurd. There was a little more heart and realism in the earlier episodes, and the concepts were simpler. In later episodes there was a sort of cynical nihilism, but it was better-produced and snappier, though sometimes less funny overall. They also took out Jerry doing standup at the start, which shifted the tone. I think Jerry felt the show going downhill a bit, which is why he decided to end it after season 9, even though he made the Guinness Book of World Records for the most money ever turned down.
