Dear Ms. Jessica,

Yesterday I saw a humantaur. Everytime I see one, I am asking to myself a question I can't answer. Luckily I know someone who may know it... Here is the question: Do they have all organs (or most of them) twice?

How are humantaurs on the inside? Do they have two sets of organs? Two pairs of lungs? Two digestive systems?

Well it looks like a lot of you want to learn about humantaurs today. For once I can give you a fairly straight answer.

Yes, most human taurs, or taur like mutants in general, have two sets of organs, and here’s why.

All of our organs are designed for the bodies they are in. An elephant heart is bigger than a human heart while a mouse’s heart is much smaller. Thus, a humantaurs heart, or really any mutant’s heart that has more body mass than a standard non-mutated human, will need to be bigger and more powerful to supply more blood to more areas of the body at once. 

More blood circulation means you need more oxygen so you need more powerful lungs. It means you need more fuel to power those organs so you need a more powerful digestive system, so on so forth. If one organ gets bigger, all of them need to get bigger.

But there’s a problem. You can’t just make hearts bigger and expect them to work better. In the medical world, we call an enlarged heart cardiomegaly, and its usually a sign of an awful disease. Simply put your body doesn’t have room for a bigger heart. A larger heart would have trouble beating, and thus put you at greater risk of heart disease.

So there’s really no extra space in a standard human torso for “more heart” to go. That’s why extra organs tend to form in extra torsos. The standard humantaur mutation essentially has a double set of every vital organ. 

This does create some interesting “side-effects” so to speak. A humantaur can take breath’s twice as deep and hold their breath twice as long as anyone else. This actually makes them very good swimmers, despite their appearance suggesting otherwise. A humantaur can also scream twice as loud as a normal human by emptying both their lungs at once. Metal music isn’t my thing, but that’s why humantaurs can be so intense when wailing on the stage.

It also means that a humantaur’s rate of breathing is much slower than a humans, since they get so much more oxygen per breath. Their rate of digestion is slower too, due to their elongated digestive tract, so humantaurs just go to the bathroom less than us. It also means that humantaurs have that awful bloated feeling after a heavy meal longer than us too. 

Speaking of meals, humantaurs have to eat twice as much as a normal human just to get their daily dose of energy. Usually humantaurs don’t quite eat double the food that they used to, simply as force of habbit, and this usually results in most humantaurs losing some body fat shortly after their mutation. However, it’s important that they eventually start eating right or eating disorders can develop. Anorexia is no joke.

There’s one other interesting side effect to mention. Humantaurs have longer life spans than other humans and mutants. Quite simply put, their organs are redundant. A humantaur can have one heart fail and the other will keep beating. Their quality of life will reduce. They will be less mobile and have to really monitor their daily activity, but they will be alive. This also means that if an organ fails, they can rest in the hospital waiting for an organ transplant as their secondary organ does all the work. It’s estimated that humantaurs should be able to regularly live to be over 100.

Humantaur physiology is very interesting despite them being classified as level 2 and 3 mutants. I’m happy to see so many people taking an interest. Stay curious!
