O'Brien's duel is easily considered one of the darkest in the entire series since it made him think he should have died. Also, Mr. T was basically assimilating people, hence why Domino is empty and why he could take other people's appearances via reading memories.

But then, after young O'Brien passed out, his father woke back up and was able to save his mother as well (probably should have shown that in the anime). The end scene is his actual mom and dad living in the hut like O'Brien said but it's a fake O'Brien who shows up like the fake Obelisk Blue Sorano. O'Brien still feels guilty though, because he still technically left her to die. She only survived because his father was lucky enough to wake up. Trueman (Mr. T) used that guilt to psychologically mess with O'Brien's head and make him think she had died because of him.
