2025-12-19 20:43:48 +0000 UTCnot a wood expert but i was immediately thinking lignum vitae too. my understanding is that, in addition to being very dense & hard, it also is naturally super oily, which is why it was used for blocks in ship rigging - like bearing bronze, under pressure the oil seeps out, lubricating it. the reason this uses a different type of wood for the rest of the pulley is probably cost. you could get away with a cheaper, lower-quality wood for the parts that aren't bearing surfaces.
