Frieren Beyond Journey's End Ep27 REACTION (Early Uncut Access)

Episode 27 | An Era of Humans

Frieren Beyond Journey's End Ep27 REACTION (Early Uncut Access)

Comments

The difference between Fern and that old Serie student is that the old man identified that Frieren was suppressing her mana at an old age. But he was Serie's pupil his whole life and didn't identify Serie suppressing her mana. Fern is a new mage, probably 16 years old, and already identified that Serie is suppressing her mana. Fern's talent is immense for a teenager. Her growth potential is what Serie is looking for in human mages.

Leandro Santos Matos

Your name pronunciations got really good. I just wanted you to know that 🤙🏼

Kcosta

She's a puppet master, a bureaucratic. It's less about ability so much as it's beneath her to travel to such a rotten place to fight someone. She's the kind to wait for invaders to burn the kingdom down and come to her before she nuked them. On principle.

Alex Hencher

Serie suppressing her mana is absolutely bonkers if you think about it. After all, Frieren had a visual representation that her mana reserves probably went well above 10x what she was showing to Aura. If Serie does the same thing, I imagine hers to pretty much engulf a small town. And to think that she has probably been refining it for centuries longer than Frieren so she is honestly probably suppressing it even more than Frieren is. Scary character. Which to me seems weird. I wonder how powerful the demon king was for Serie to not try to take care of them, unless she has some other motive behind her inaction or some reason where she could not battle him.

jastop94

I mean to be fair, Frieren did say she has lost to 11 mages in the past with a majority of them being human. So, it goes to show that people are capable of doing so if they have the aptitude and at least some prerequisite mana threshold to at least keep up for some duration. Though, we do not know when these defeats have occurred against humans, so it might have been some centuries since her last defeat against a human so she would be significantly more refined by now. But it still poses a huge possibility.

jastop94

Serie is such a contradictory character. She says the field of flowers spell is useless all while standing in a green house tending to decorative plants. She says her human students are disapointments but immediately asks fern to be her student. She wonders how frieren beat the demon kings says she wasn't strong enough, expecting her to do it solo. Frierens response of her friends helping juxtaposes serie surrounding her self with mages but never trusting in them. She's one of my favorite characters and I hope we see more of her next season

Ben

Serie is very good at reading others but can't read herself and has trouble being honest with how she feels.

Ian Mercado

The Party defeating the Demon King would make an awesome movie.

Coburnify .

Definitely what Replica did to Fern - based on Japanese context (being cornered or forced to deploy it)

Jan Negrey

Here's an idea for after next week. Let's restart from episode one and do it all over again. :)

James Bell

Cool, thanks. That's how I see it as well.

Caradoc Elmet

Oh! Definitely what her Replica used against Fern... That was my first impression lol and it was so different then anything else we've seen.. I assumed "that" was referring to.... that haha

Jessica McCann

I have a question for you, if I may: You mentioned Frieren previously saying that she hadn't had to use "that" for 80 years. Do you think she was refering to the move she used against her own replica or to what the replica used against Fern? There's no correct answer based on what we've seen in the anime so far, so it's not a test lol. Different reactors read it differently so I wonder how you see it yourself.

Caradoc Elmet

And they've always been there. Himmel has a very different reaction to the Field of Flowers spell than Heiter and Eisen back in ep 02. Like it's bringing back memories for him.

Mike E

We already know the reason for why the demon king wanted to eradicate all the elves in the manga, and I think it should definitely be shown why in season 2. So look forward to it!

Seal Oppa

Elven Magic is also a very viable theory and could be one of the reasons why the Demon King wanted to eradicate all elves, because Elven Magic is something he has no answer for. Or Serie is just so powerful that the Demon King didn't want any other Elf growing into another Serie. Which could also be because of Elven Magic. And the reason why Serie never killed the Demon King is, just as Flamme said, because Serie loves the battle. And she's just waiting for the Demon King to get to her level so that she can finally go all out. Unfortunately Frieren caused an unexpected upset by killing the Demon King. Or both Serie and the Demon King kept each other in check like Batman and the Joker, and they never intended to kill each other. And that's why she couldn't believe someone as weak as Frieren could ever defeat the Demon King, and she couldn't have if it wasn't for her companions. Either way I'm very interested in the history between Serie and the Demon King as well as the fall of the Demon King. Hopefully we'll get the wiser in the future.

Brickland

I was thinking the same when I saw that scene. LOL

Drift3r

We all know that Frieren loves old folk magic. There's theories floating around that it was a spell so old that it's no longer recognised as magic, let alone a spell. It could be using mana in such a way that it's indistinguishable from ambient mana by modern standards, or it may not be using mana at all, but rather a completely different way of tapping into magic. Someone in the comments on one of the previous videos called it "elven magic" that is different to human, demon and divine magic, which I think holds some water. Elves have probably been around for far longer than human civilisation, so they must have their own equivalent of "ancient times", and if that spell was developed in that period, it's no surprise is utterly different to modern magic. Still, that's just a theory, but whatever it is, it's fascinating.

Milosz Skowronski

And here is where your theory about fear from the previous episodes does work. Because here it is actually fear that is one of the things that doesn't let other mages pass. I feel like in previous episode that word could easily be changed to something else. Heck, even here it doesn't have to be fear, it can be just feeling of intimidation. But this is far closer to what you thought in previous episode where there could have been multiple different factors. This episode is beautiful and your reactions are fantastic. It's hard to describe why, but they are. There are very few reactors that are on this level. Thank You.

Jan Negrey

And remember, Serie's intuition is always right.

Milosz Skowronski

Mariya Ise who plays Serie is fine. She's 36 so I'm sure she has a long and successful career in front of her. It's Atsuko Tanaka, the VA who played Flamme, that passed away recently. She was a fantastic actress with a very distinctive voice. She had either leading or important roles in Fate/Stay Night, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Bayonetta and JJK, among many others. She will be dearly missed :(

Milosz Skowronski

"I'm obsessed with this VA" *sigh* Is someone going to break the news to her? Edit: Oops. How did I get those two mixed? I'm such a silly baka.

RJ aka LEMental

Kanne to Lawine: "Three years is such a long time." and then pats her head. Denken to Richter: "In three years you will be much stronger." and then leaves. It just shows the contrast between how kids and adults handle those kinds of situations. Both their perception of time and the kind of encouragement is much different. And then comes Frieren and treats Richter like a kid by teasing him how he CAN'T fix Fern's staff XD And Richter is like: "I see what you're doing, but I need this win to feel better, so gimme!" XD Just shows that people don't really "grow up", they just age and pretend it means something :) Which harkens back to what Heiter said in one of the flashbacks: "My mind has hardly changed since I was a child. I've simply been pretending I've been an adult until I can make it as an ideal grown-up. I'll probably keep pretending until the day I die."

Milosz Skowronski

That might have been the key in defeating the Demon King. Serie said demons are very sensitive to mana and as far as she knows, until now the Demon King was the only one who saw Frieren's suppressed mana. Maybe the Demon King could block or nullify anything that's registered as a spell, so Frieren had to cast something that the Demon King could not detect or register as a spell. I really hope we get some flashbacks of the fight, or maybe Frieren gets in a situation she has to use that spell again, because I really wanna know what's up.

Brickland

I think it's something beyond magic, like transcending into something more. But you could be right that it's essentially concealing the mana of the magic cast. I found it interesting that when the copy did the "spell" a magic circle formed under her and she didn't need a staff to cast it, im sure that has to be some sort of clue.

Jaded_J

This has intrigued me for a while too.. not only could Fern not detect it as a spell, Frieren's replica cast it while having no arm (arms?) This show, and japanese fantasy in general, tend to take a lot of inspiration from classic DnD (like mimics) and when this moment happened all I could think was "oh shit Frieren has psionic abilities?!" lol but I don't think that's the explanation here

C. A. Rockefeller

Himmel said he found the spell of flowers beautiful while not removing his eyes off of Frieren. It’s the details in this show man…

killezio3 killezio3

One dialogue you missed at around 17:50 was Serie saying that Lenen could beat Frieren in a battle, which is nuts

killezio3 killezio3

From what Denken said during the first test, not even the most skilled mage can conceal the mana you use for casting a spell. So either the Height of Magic that Frieren used is casting a powerful spell that costs no mana or being able to completely conceal the mana used for the spell. Or maybe I'm completely off base here.

Brickland

It hit me like a hammer that the season was ending when the preview quotes were just gone. I didn't want it to end either.

William Roberts

When Serie walks out of the hall and says, "In the end, that boy never saw the fluctuations in my mana either" she's referring to Lenen (old guy she was speaking bluntly too) the first 1st Class Mage ever and her student. However that is also a hint to the viewer that she also suppresses her mana, despite it being as large as Frieren's mana unleashed, and therefore she is ridiculously powerful. It is also why she smiles when Fern tells her that she is seeing her mana fluctuate because that demonstrates to Serie how powerful Fern can become.

Drift3r

In the 2nd episode. Where Frieren makes the field of flowers at the church ruins. Eisen and Heiter are shown to both be amazed by the spell. Himmels face is more of a nostalgic look like he's reliving a memory. And it turns out he was. It's details like that that just take the show further and further beyond anything else. Rewatching this episode I can feel my heart preparing itself for the finale again.... Help

Camvrcz

Serie: "You were lucky." Frieren: "That's right. I was lucky." Frieren's response means something totally different than what Serie means, and its something Serie doesn't understand. I cant get over how much I love the dialogue and subtext in this anime lol.

Jonathan H

Something I had a thought about was maybe Himmel learned about the language of flowers because of the spell Frieren used when he was a kid, whether because flowers became significant to him at that moment or because he thought they were significant to Frieren if that was the spell she used to comfort him.

Jake Thompson

Lernen being unable to see the fluctuations in Serie's suppressed mana is the same reason someone standing in Trafalgar Square can't see England.

hurryupmode

This ep is one of my favorites. Btw do the naruto pain streams have a time schedule or are they random?

Shady

Thanks for the reaction, and you're right! Here we reach one of the core lessons of Frieren. The beautiful thing is all those countless years dedicated to revenge, the plan Flamme orchestrated to hide mana in order to kill the demon king, it failed. The demon king saw past it. But that one fleeting moment of affection and love at the end of Flamme's life, where she chose to share that flower spell with Frieren, didn't fail. It led to Himmel choosing her and brought the party together. The flower spell saved the world. And Serie is a very interesting character to me, her suppressed mana is the size of Frieren's fully unleashed mana. She judged Frieren not on how powerful she currently is, but how powerful she SHOULD be now if she hadn't "wasted" her time. Fern on the other hand, as a young mage less than 20 years old and even fewer years of mage experience under her belt, accomplished something that only the most powerful first class mage and the demon king himself did. It's no wonder Serie jumped at that opportunity- Fern is a prodigy and her potential is incredible. Serie gives off the feeling of someone who says things she believes should be said or are pragmatic, regardless of her personal opinion. She says Flamme was someone she taught on a whim, and yet reminisces about her like a mother who lost her child. She says the flower spell is useless, and yet decided to have the test in a greenhouse completely surrounded by flowers. I think it's just a separation between what she thinks is the tough but "right" thing to say, versus whatever her internal feelings might be.

The Blue Savior

Fluctuating mana is a sign it’s being suppressed, so the mana that Serie has shown that is equal to an unsuppressed Frieren is her holding back massively. Needless to say Serie is a complete monster, and Fern showed her talent by being able to see that. Something which even her current star pupil was unable to see despite all the years he spent with her.

Matthew Moore

please release the last today 😭

Douglas Ferreira

Just makes you wonder how terrifyingly great Serie's mana truly is if that's what it looks like when she's suppressing it. And poor Lernen being scolded for not noticing over the 50 years despite having no idea what she truly means (even though he is evidently the only first class mage there that she had any hopes of to notice).
