The creator is actually FULLY unhinged and used to make a comic called Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, that was just as dark as it sounds. (And basically had himself as the main role of this deranged serial killer. The art style was VERY similar to this and I read it when I was FAR too young lol) That guy made a show for Nickelodeon and this was the absolutely WILD result. He infused this show with the ugly, dark (incredibly stupid) side he sees in humanity and basically founded an entire SUBCULTURE all on his own. I swear, this show was the spawn point for all the little Hot Topic freaks back in the day. Truly a great moment in media culture in general. The guy did his best to keep the show weird and about as dark as a kids show could realistically get. I'd be SUPER pumped to experience this one again.

This is still a pretty unique show in its own right, some shows come close in style but the art is still very unique and while some plots are typical the commentary underneath ages well. Unfortunately it's a complicated mess for why it got cut short so early but what's here is still a fun ride. also it's not stated enough but the show's music really doesn't get enough credit, Kevin Manthei does a great job

Like, there are a bunch of episodes that were half-animated and Nick went "fuck it, this show's too expensive, you've gone over budget 3 times, you're months behind schedule, and the showrunner keeps sneaking images of GIR covered in blood in the show. you're all fired". But this show was STUPIDLY popular despite that. It was basically the face of 00s mallgoth culture. Early 00s Nick didn't realize the potential of appealing to the teenager internet audience, so they just shut it down (a mistake they'd make a second time a decade later, when they had the rights to a short called "Adventure Time" that was getting a huge amount of buzz on the internet, but decided it wasn't worth bothering with and let a different network pick up the rights). Hell, if you look at Nick's history as a network, the whole channel is basically a series of fuckups held together entirely by good branding.

2025-08-14 14:24:11 +0000 UTCI used to watch the series when I was a kid, and I really enjoyed it. It’s unfortunate that it only lasted for two seasons. However, it did make a comeback on Netflix in the form of a movie in 2019. So, I recommend that you watch the series first, and then the movie.
