That's a *great* question! Since I work digital, I have a folder designated for sketches and preliminary pencils. There are several layers in there, and there are many colors – blue, purple, green, etc. So, when I start drawing on that layer, the lines appear in those colors. The only time my lines appear in black is when I'm on a "final art" layer. This accomplishes two things. (1) I never accidentally do my final inks on the sketch layer. If you ever talk to artists who work digitally, they'll tell you how many times they've done this — and how difficult it can be to fix. (2) I can draw one figure in one layer and another part of the illustration in another layer — and then move those two shapes around independently of each other without ruining either.

Question: why blue line in digital? My understanding was always that pencils were done first because you cannot erase the inks, so there had to be two steps before you could apply the color and wanted to remove mistakes. With digital, you can erase "inks," so why not start there?
