3D Lighting and Thinking

Hello everyone,

Today, I'd like to have a casual chat with you. Every day, I check X (Twitter) to find interesting techniques and information, and when I come across a post that catches my attention, I save the link in a memo-like format so that I can look into it later and put it into practice.

The other day, while reviewing my memos, I found a great post about lighting that I'd like to share with you.

https://x.com/Satoshi_Tomioka/status/1705394869680943116

This post is by Satoshi Tomioka, and it clearly explains the basic lighting methods used in 3D lighting, such as key light, fill light, and backlight. The post is in a tree format, making it easy to understand when reading through it in order. (I'm posting this in Japanese, but I think you can understand the meaning from just looking at the image.)

Shifting gears a bit, in my case, after reading a post that interests me, I try to test it out myself. When I do, I further research lighting techniques, and I find many helpful articles.

For example, this article.

https://www.premiumbeat.com/blog/replicating-3d-lighting-from-a-movie/

explains in an easy-to-understand manner how to recreate the lighting techniques used in movies using 3D. The character's facial expressions, texture, and sense of depth can change significantly depending on the lighting. It's clear that knowledge of lighting is just as important as modeling when it comes to making characters look attractive.

In this way, starting from a single post and researching various topics can lead to new and interesting discoveries. When you find something interesting or intriguing, I recommend looking into it yourself and trying it out, even if just a little, as it will become part of your experience.

Today's post ended up being more about my thought process than about lighting, but there are many other techniques that I'm interested in, so I plan to talk about them from time to time in the future.

I hope this will be helpful for your creative activities!
