【Shoost Tips】 Expression technique using layers of light.

Hello everyone.

Recently, I have been experimenting with the new "Add Layer" feature in Shost v0.11.0 to create an Anime atmosphere.

Each of these examples focuses on a different point of adjustment. Since it would make the article very long to present them all, I would like to present a technique that focuses on the expression of light.

Expression technique using Glow layers.

Here is a scene that will be explained this time.

I will explain in turn. First, please see the initial state.

This is just the background and characters placed in Shoost. From here, we will first make adjustments using the same Shoost functions we have been using.

We blurred the background, adjusted the colors, etc. From here, I will add more airiness and glow expression.

Shoost has a flare function (glow function), but I felt it lacked expressive power when I wanted to make detailed adjustments. Therefore, we will use the "Add Layer" function added in Shost v0.11.0 to add glow expressions. Prepare a "glow image" and place it.

Here is the glow image we will use.

Prepare an elliptical gray image. Place this image with "Add" as the Blending mode.

For this background, the glow image is placed with the image of light spreading from the back of the center to the front.

The first step is to add light between the background and the characters, using Color Correction to adjust the colors as they are placed. Shoost flare function can only add light to the periphery of the screen. Therefore, if you want to add glow to the center of the screen, you can use an image to expand the range of expression.

Using the same method, we will now add glow from the layer above the character. Adjust the orange areas to be brighter and the blue areas to be darker.

It is fine in this state, but I added strong lines of glow as accents.

The scene is now complete. By making the screen black and white, it is easy to see how the light is expressed, so when making adjustments, it is best to do so while setting the saturation value to 0 and making the image black and white.

The scene data presented in this article is attached for your reference. Please take a look if you are interested. You can check the data by loading the file "SampleScene.shoost" in the folder.

To check the data, move the scene to a folder directly under the C drive and load the scene. (C:/ShoostSample_Scene) Otherwise, the link to the image will be broken.

Have a good Shoost life!

This actually looks really cool. I've been curious to replicate a similar look in something like photoshop/after effects itself to give my characters/animations a legit modern anime look/glow. It's cool to see it's possible to bring on the same effect right in shoots.
