Book 6 Early Access: Chapter 12
Added 2024-03-15 15:36:51 +0000 UTCA chase scene, multiple text input sequences, observation tags and introspective choices—this chapter has a bit of everything! It even has some...lore.
People who know me (or have asked me SoH questions before) know I'm not a big fan of lore. My stance on worldbuilding is that if it's not a necessary detail to the story you're trying to tell, why bother wasting brainpower on it? It also poses a very real danger: the act of putting down even a seemingly insignificant detail (ex. Tosh's favorite fruit is cantaloupe you guys!) ties your hands for the future, which is why retcon'ing even exists.
I know not every author shares my opinion, and I know some readers really enjoy lore and that all the extra details help them feel immersed in the world the author is trying to sell them. But for me, I'd rather the story beats and characters perform that role instead. Lore has a 'memory tax' on readers—and that's a very real problem in a world where some can't spell Masami or Masashi right!
Worldbuilding for the sake of it just isn't worth it in my opinion, but I guess that's one of the many reasons I'll never be a Tolkien!
