My assumption is that this pause is similar to the one Tesla took when switching from linear programming to neural nets for FSD. They had a breakthrough with the hand design, and rather than push ahead with the current design they put things on hold to perfect the new one. Elon is a master at ignoring “sunk costs” and always pushing for the perfect solution. These two traits will sometimes create the illusion that Tesla is behind, but imo will result in a much more disruptive and ideal result in the end.
