Fat Dad Club, part 6: Sketches

I very nearly went with the alternative version of the bathtub scene with Carl and Joe, but I could get their angles into a place I was happy with. Sometimes as an artist I try to forge ahead and just make it work out of a sense of sunk-cost or sheer belligerence, but I knew I could do better with that image, so ended up reworking it entirely. I figured since we see Joe's face in the group picture, it will be okay to have him facing away in the bathtub one, plus we get to see more of a frontal of Carl and his growing bulges of flab. These were both quite complex images to put together.

With the kind of artwork I make, where I want to depict big men getting bigger in all their glory, it’s not always easy to work in interesting angles because I’ve got to show their bodily progress off, but I do try to mix it up as much as I can. And thank you!

Really excellent pictures this time, Lokitu. The group hug perfectly and delicately displays the emotion of each participant, and you do a fantastic job of showing how those wonderful bellies fit together in close proximity! The bathtub picture you chose is an unusual angle - really cinematic - and I think you made the right call going with this one. I seem to spend hours at a time re-examining your body of work, Lokitu - and every time I find some new detail I hadn't seen before. I may have told you this before (I'm getting both old and fat, so my memory's not what it was!), but you are my favourite artist by miles.xxx.

Thank you! Yeah, I feel like I was close to getting it, but couldn't quite stick the landing.

I think there's something there in the alternative image of Carl and Joe in the tub! But I can definitely understand the feeling of working in something and not getting it the way you like it. Great job as always!
