The Haunting of Hill House Episode 5

Prepare yourself for a revelation that shakes the foundations of your understanding of life itself.... (you can't).

Comments

I love this show deeply but I was on edge waiting for you to find out the truth of BNB! I won’t spoil it in case you watch Bly Manor, but Hannah’s episode made me feel similarly. So much so I had to step away from the show and only finished it like a year ago 😭💔 Great but DEVASTATING television

Lillie Feller

I still remember how I felt finishing this episode the first time. The ending really does send you into full emotional free fall. Next episode is my fav in this season.

roseforthethorns

Victoria Pedretti is just such an incredible actress

EJRI

This episode always makes me cry 😭 Whenever you're watching episode 5 of a Mike Flanagan show, you just know you're gonna be blown away 😅

EJRI

Yep. That jumpscare got all of us.

Joshua Scott

Girl. There's a jump scare in episode 8 that is the best I've ever seen ever ever ever. Don't have anything in your hands.

Emma Nichole

THE SILENCE AT THE END WAS SO LOUD 😭😭 I understood every moment The concept of being haunted by your own death for your entire life - cursed from the second you stepped foot in that house to a fate you can’t escape… horrifying. And I think the house was able to “honeytrap” and lead Nellie in particular so easily to her demise because of her weakened mental state 😕 my girl had been broke down over years by her own ghost and the call of the haunted mansion ☹️☹️ Mike Flanagan and his horribly traumatic metaphors 😭 “Her wedding song is pretty too.” I literally added it to my playlist 😭😂 Heavenly Day by Patty Griffin!!!

Daniel McGuinness

The actor wore blue contacts that's why his eyes look a bit off. Because the older actor has blue eyes so. But some of the other actors' didn't do that lol.

Leigh Harrison

I think the 1963 version is genuinely scary, and for its time that says a lot.

Angel Tomes

Yeeeaaa….they not finna drive me crazy with this show. Ain’t no way this is how we find out 😭

Quinn

IM ON HOLIDAY IN SPAIN FOR A WEEK I DONT WANT TO WATCH THIS ON MY PHONE!!!! BUT I PROBABLY WILL!!! EPISODE 5 AHHHH

Daniel McGuinness

poor Nellie...she takes "borrowing grief from the future" to the next level 😔

sailorkimmy

You should definitely watch the 1963 version of The Haunting at some point. It’s based on the same book this series was but the series is only VERY loosely inspired by it but it does such a good job of making references. The 1999 remake is also worth a watch not because it’s good but because it’s fun trash.

RiffRanger

I forgot that I had wanted to say that I do know the story of the girl with the ribbon around her neck, that's what I thought the twist was going to be in Orphan. Damn was I wrong! 🤣

Zombies_Are_Real

“Air BNB” KILLEDDD me😭

Noah🩵

Me too girl

Liam Rendos

okay AIR BNB kiLLED me

Em

Omg... I didn't recognize him! The original is such a good movie (and genuinely scary). There is a reason that so many people have wanted to use it as source material. He was also in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (another classic non-horror movie).

Angel Tomes

I think they are too hard on Steve. He was a kid just like they were. He was asleep that final night. He doesn't seem to have any "gifts". And they resent him for it. He's spent his entire life trying to understand, trying to process the craziness that happened...but he can't understand it at their level. He tries to be there for them.

Angel Tomes

been hoping for YEARS to see your reaction to this episode and it did not disappoint 😭💜 so, so grateful for these uploads! never had a show capture my attention and break my heart the way Hill House did. you’re gonna love this second half!

Vee

Man, I haven't thought of that story about the girl with the black ribbon choker in decades, but I completely see how Hill House brought it to mind. The reveal that Nell spent her entire life haunted by the visage of her own death is so emotionally devastating that I had to do what you did and just sit for a moment to process it the first time I watched this show. The fact that the revelation comes just after Nell is given this illusion of being reunited with Arthur and being seen/heard/understood by her siblings just makes the blow hit harder. It's painful and shocking and so well-done. ' This show really goes hard on showing the suffering the whole family feels as a result of their time in Hill House and it does such a good job of making these incredibly traumatized characters feel like real people by making you feel so much empathy for them, being sad for their losses, frustrated by their actions and choices, and making you want so bad to see something better to come their way.

LurkingTrashPanda

You should watch the 1999 Haunting movie after this series. I’d love to see your reaction to another interpretation of this story!

Slayrogen101

I’m so glad Nell gagged Steve like that, he deserved it. Also Nell was wearing the same outfit when she scared him in his apt.

angelo

I loved your reaction to Theo and Nell’s fight. A lot of people judge Theo harshly for that, and I get we all feel awful for Nellie, but - in that moment - she did cross a lot of boundaries, lashing out and isolating herself more. She’s breaking down and it’s horribly sad, no doubt about it, but others get hurt too. It’s the same with Steven except I don’t feel bad about him at all lol. Nellie breaks my heart. You processing the ending was SO REAL! It took me a hot minute to process what we had realized just then.

Ana Fox

I had my tissues ready for this one!! I interpreted it as if Nell was seeing her life flash before her eyes as she died, but because of her abilities the "live" versions of her saw her back and since she was so young the first time and afraid, she saw a version of herself that was scary (wearing all black instead of all white and her hair in front of her face) and that's just what she saw every time. Still it's so sad. Yeeeesh! Also, dang, you are so good at spotting the background ghosts! I missed most of them my first time watching this.

Taco Wolf

Just wanted to let you know that I'm having such good time watching this with you! Haunting as it may be 😆 Also last night I came home and heard my roommate was being loud. I just went straight to bed. Woke up and on the wall in blood it said "Aren't you glad you didn't turn on the light? PS Tell Alanda to add Waxwork (1988) to the list" 🤔Odd right?

Ethan Sin

Truly hope you ok 😆

HBK713🏄🏾‍♂️

This is what I’ve been waiting for! So many tears, truly one tragic revelation after another 😭🤍 PS. ‘Who the fuck are y’all?!’ sent me

Joel Amatore

When you said I'm an earlier episode Arthur wasn't husband material, obviously I couldn't comment, but internally I as like Alanda nooooooo you have no idea! 😭😭😭 Finding out her husband died and she was the BNB this whole time was devastating. Nell had such a pure heart, and in a way it killed her. I'm also really glad you did not have a hot beverage in your hands!

Zombies_Are_Real

I’m an empath. This show too much 😭

Joe

That jump scare didn’t make me jump but you did 😂 When you screamed I literally jumped up off my bed from your screaming 🤣 You scared me.

Brandy Henry

Girl I was waiting on you to get to this episode! I low key wanted to skip it personally! But it’s sooooo freaking good this director is amazing

Indica Jay

I CANNOT believe this dropped on the first day of my water fast. I need snacks for this!! I will be strong and wait. I WILL BE STRONG.

Nyssa Rawther 🍉

I was glad when Nell embarrassed Steve during his book tour because it was true, how dare he be such a hypocrite. It was such a sad scene though as she wants to be heard but she gets shooed aside because it will hurt his professional image

Zach Boardman

Arthur and Nell's physical acting is so good. So much of their time together is in the montage but just by their body language they sell that these 2 are in luuurrrve 😭

a cup of cait

Nell's psychiatrist is played by Russ Tamblyn (TWIN PEAKS) who played Luke in the original (and certified classic) THE HAUNTING (1963), the first adaptation of Shirley Jackson's masterpiece novel THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE.

Justin Lafleur

You got me watching this show and now I'm hooked on it right along with ya girl! The writing is so good. I hope you watch Bly Manor next . I def wanna check that out as well.

La Toya Sheri

This was the episode that broke me. The idea that she was being followed by death from the moment she entered that house is terrifying, but also the little clues about who the bent neck lady is throughout are genius. This show is so heavy, it is something that I have to be in the mood to rewatch, but the detail shine in the rewatch because you can focus on the little details in the back. The creepy children, the shapes in the fog in the window, the fact that when the locket goes from her mothers hands to hers at the end there, the chain changes from gold to rope. This whole story is told in the shadows and the ticks that show you what something is, while obfuscating what that thing is. This is why I love Mike Flanagan. That said, a big part of the magic is the crazy talent of this cast-- they sale every moment and you don't want to take your eyes off of them.

Taraji Jones

This episode!!! I remember binging this with a friend years ago and liking it, but this is when it all clicked into place for me. The idea of you haunting your past, present, and future is still bone chilling to this day. Whew. (Also: I know we’ve got tons to get through, but if you’re still looking for thrillers, can I recommend Strange Darling? It’s got fine ass Joel from Smile in it, plus Mother Grapefruit from Insidious 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️)

Ty Breezy

The way all of us during the first viewing were so up in arms about the husband being MIA only to realize he tragically died in front of Nell 😭 Damn this show really said the Crain children shall not be allowed to have any good things.

Daniela Sannino

THE GAG OF THE CENTURY FR ALANDA omggg but now we get into the juicy adult sibling storylines!!! can't wait to see what you think of the second half of this show!! your reactions have not disappointed in the least i'm so sorry you have to go through this journey 😂😭💛

soggytacos

My friend, I think that's the first time I've ever heard you actually scream. It was a good one too. This episode DEVASTATED me the first time I saw it and revisiting it just now, it hits just as hard. Poor Nell haunted by herself for her WHOLE LIFE! I hope you can breathe now, friend. You need to do an overall video at the end to just talk about the experience.

Waylon Jordan

This is one of the best episodes of television ever. I’ve seen it 4 times or so at this point and I’m still BAWLING my heart out every time. 🥺

Trini Kat

"AirBNB" IM SCROMITING

misery (the pig) 🐖

Episode 6 is my favorite episode of any TV show ever.

Nat B

I really think Mike Flanagan is my favorite contemporary filmmaker. Everything he does is just so good.

Nat B

Unrelated to the show.... Tell us about "The Roommate Risk," back there. Lol

Matthew Shields

"she's living crazy. Her phone doesn't even have a case on it." 😂

Matthew Shields

That’s Mike Flanagan for you: scare the shit out of you one minute and then break your heart the next

WolfHunter18

When I saw you sipping your drink during the vending machine scene, I was like ‘She’s gonna mess around and choke when that jump scare happens’ LOL!

Michelle Roebuck

I remember calling it as Nell was haunting herself THROUGHOUT YHE REST OF HER LIFE! That hurt me so bad because Nell deserved better. All these years later and it still hurts smh. But just know from now on, shit is really about to get real 😳😳😳

LaTrese Harris

CRYING this is a such a great representation of trauma in family, it breaks my heart 😭

Connor Castle-Boulay

I remember when I first watched this and thought, "Damn, Flanagan, why not just kick me in the nuts? It'd hurt less." I can't think of anything more bleak than Nell HAUNTING HERSELF her entire life but not understanding how or why until the moment of her actual death. She never had a chance. Not ever. It's the saddest shit. Even Queen Sidney P would be like, "you win, girl. Can't compete." DEVASTATING.

Aidan Halliwell

it's funny but also doesn't make a huge amount of sense - Nell and Steve snickering at Shirley finding out, saying something about "30 years for her to figure it out" when they also only just found out themselves that night when they caught Theo in the act! So maybe dial down the smugness a bit, LOL.

BlacKnightSun

The most devastating episode Mike Flanagan has ever done (and yes, I know there are some strong contenders, I've watched all his stuff). Every time you said something about how sad or grim this is, I was just like, "It gets so much worse." Even when NotMommy pushes her off, still, "It gets worse!" The Bent Neck Lady revelation is just that shattering. Also, Alanda, I'm betting you are familiar with Emily Dickinson's work, but in case you don't know this particular poem or just didn't think about it - I urge you to go read I Felt a Funeral in my Brain and think about it in relation to the final sequence.

BlacKnightSun

See the fucking show was already great before this episode. But episode 5 and 6 really fucking skyrockets it into a whole other level. Like this is CINEMA. It is divine TV!

Simone

This is taking me back to how I felt seeing that ending…😭 it’s so tragic! Also, that vending machine jump scare has to be top 5 for you between this and everything else you’ve watched lmao!

RJ

The fact that Nell was haunted by her own death her whole life is terrifying and so well done. Her fate was fixed the moment she sat foot in Hill House.

Michael Instone

I've watched close to 100 Hill House reactions over the years. I am a true FlanaStan. And I have never waited with more baited breath than for your reactions, because I know you have the intelligence, insight, and empathy to truly pay attention to and understand his work. So excited to see your reaction to the next part. It's some of the best filmmaking I've ever seen.

Polly Keown

Yes, Lake Mungo is a masterpiece. It's very much in the same style emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually as Flanagan's stuff is.

Polly Keown

omgggg it’s up!!! I was about to go to sleep but HECK NAH!

Ana Fox

The fact Nell was haunted by her own death for her entire life is so devastating. That jump scare got me the same way the first time I saw it.

laura

love this ep so much the twins are my surrogate children

K Rose B

Oh also! I have to recommend the movie Lake Mungo. For a horror movie it is... so sad. But it's one of Mike Flannagan's favorites, & when I watched it recently my first thought was of Hill House & Nellie specifically.

Allison

This is the episode that broke me

Carmito

Alanda is so much stronger than me, I sob at Nellie's dancing with Arthur through the house every time.

Allison

Poor Nell. That poor baby.

Joe

My heart jumped for joy when you posted! The best part is the show only gets better!

Adri

This whole show is absolutely brilliant but whew this is one of the toughest ones for me. That reveal hits so hard.

Alex

To quote Alanda ‘this fucking show!?’

Joe

Okay,…just finished…..speechless. I’ll see you episode 6. What the hell was even that!? How horrible. how absolutely horrible.

Joe

I cried so. hard. editing this ep...

Alanda

my need to deflect with humor so I don't break down in screeches is just so... like I know it's not funny but if i dont make a joke ill DIE😖

Alanda

She's an absolute powerhouse!! My heart is broken with a downturn of her mouth!! like it's actually unreal

Alanda

I've literally had to sit in silence for 15 minutes lol this was the One thing I vaguely know about this show going in and it still managed to gag me

Kadiesha

also Victoria Pedretti's eyes in this episode, my lord. She manages to make them yearning, manic, and dead all at the same time and idk how she does it

Kate

Girl, I was worried for your health with that straw during the vending machine scare. Lol then you called her “air b.n.b.” and I cackled so hard I started coughing and was worried for my health.

Vicki M

oh look I'm crying....

Alanda

oh wow!! 😭

Alanda

gagged me literally and left me speechless like....

Alanda

yeah I don't think he did anything wrong! I was too on guard against him because I was scared and didn't know why he was absent and he was wholly innocent!!!😭😭😭

Alanda

right! I've had minor sleep paralysis before. It never lasted long and I never saw anything because I couldn't even open my eyes. But my mind was awake and I couldn't move and it was literally the most terrifying feeling I've ever experienced. Like I felt like I was suffocating and couldn't do anything. Experiencing it regularly with accompanying nightmares is just beyond what I can even imagine. I pray to every force in the universe that you're able to find ways to lessen this

Alanda

I'm gonna need 5-7 business years to get over that ending

Kadiesha

Girl. How did you scream like that without opening your mouth!? This might be the weirdest and most unsettling episode I’ve ever seen. I just passed the 52 minute mark. I’m in shambles.

Joe

Just finished the reaction... That jump scare also got me good the first time but the reveal at the end?!?? Tears.

Pierre Brown

Girl I forgot you’ve already seen Episode 6 so you KNOW 😳😳

TheBrendanV

As someone w/ chronic nightmares and sleep paralysis since I was a kid they did a good job showing the panic and the emotion of the experince but in real life none of that twitching or gasping is happening. You're 'paralyzed' ... my wife could be looking right at me during an episode and she'd never know anything was wrong

Simone Cherie

My poor baby 😫 I guess why the thing with Arthur never bothered me is because like he said, he's not a doctor. She probably wasn't going to be his recurring patient or anything. I saw my sleep tech exactly twice lol.

Dess

this episode is so so so difficult </3

Logan

I feel like you now fully understand why Mikey Flanagan has our asses in an emotional chokehold. And as good as Hill House is...Bly Manor is somehow MORE beautiful and tragic. Not as "scary" but still with the horrors. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️

RinCaimo

the silence at the end had me DYING! 😭😭😭😭😭😭 when I first watched this ep, I was shook for DAAAAAYYYYYSSSS! loved the reaction 🫶🏾

Ryan

idk if anyone else has pointed it out in these comments or previous ones but the dad has freaky contacts to match the older version 😭

Dana (Dah-Nah)

Fun fact: the actor who played Nell's therapist played Luke in the original Hill House movie, The Haunting (1963).

Andrew

First of all, I am glad you didn’t die! Secondly, I started giggling right before the “scene” because I had a full blown recount of how I reacted 🤣

Drama King

Also Nellie flushing her pills because her being on her meds would make Luke’s urges to relapse come back(the twin thing) makes my heart break so bad like she was willing to throw away her help & levelness to help her twin brother☹️☹️☹️ SHE ALWAYS THERE FOR EVERYONE ELSE & she had no one when she needed people the most AH😭😭😭 Nellie my kindred spirit frfr

bribricutie3

This one was so messed up smh

Ny Swagtaz

TRUE DEVASTATION😩

I.H.W.T

Nellie's dancing breaks me every goddamn time. Been so jazzed to rewatch this generational trauma slash horror fest with you all

Rachel

this show got me looking for demons in all the wrong corners 😭😭😭

Alanda

like we've lived in such a constant state of emotional violence that I couldn't take the love story at face value 😭😭 I spent most of it on edge waiting for him to betray us!!

Alanda

sorry love 😭

Alanda

Alanda's immediate distrust of Arthur never fails to tickle me.

Kate

The way the adorable love story in the beginning made me momentarily forget the TRAUMA that would ensue...I was just happy to see Nellie happy 😭😭

Tlemona

This has to be planned 😭 I always get the notification before I have to do something 😭 I can't wait to see it tonight ✨✨✨

Horror Nights

You can just see the wheels turning so clearly lol

Cass Reid

That wedding scene with Theo is such a wonderful respite in all the trauma

Cass Reid

I love Shirley’s face when she’s watching Theo dance.

Vicki M

It's 1AM here but I'm ready! I'm watching this serie for the first time also! Kind of scared but let's go!!!

Joh

shattered and speechless

Alanda

This episode did really break my heart when I first seen it 😢

Zach Boardman

oh we're on the same vibration i feel 🙂‍↕️ I hope your day takes a turn for the better (and if not that it flies by and tomorrow is sweeter💛💛💛)

Alanda

Having a rough day because yah know story of my life atp & 11ths are just triggering days for me now😭😭😭 can’t wait to watch the is because this episode always gives me a good cry session to let out, & you literally always come through when I need ya🥲💖 you aligned with my spirit or something like?!

bribricutie3

the funnest of funs!! (emotional turmoil) 😭😭

Alanda

🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️💛💛

Alanda

oh that sounds so good!! I'm number one lover of a lil sweet treat 😭

Alanda

I remember so clearly taking a long walk in a park after this episode, tear-stained and shattered, welcome to the glorious agony of this twist

Cass Reid

Soo.... having fun?

☆Cam☆

ALEX OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Alanda

like spare us please my god 😭😭😭

Alanda

Yayyy! I can eat snacks AND watch you get traumatized lol.

tallasianchick

What a nice after work treat! I don't have a fun drink, but I am about to dig into some spiced sweet potato pancakes 🥞

Kadiesha

I usually watch while I'm at work but I don't think I can wait until tomorrow.

RC Flores

👁️ 👄 👁️

Joe

nell goes off her meds every time luke goes to rehab 🙃😭

Alex Manning

no cause let me tell you...Nellie finding the love of her life while fighting trauma from her childhood and then when the bent neck heffa took him from Nellie I was ready to fight her ass a take that head fully off of her shoulders...only for us to find out Nellie was actually haunted by her own death this whole time...my heart breaks for her even after all these years😭 also: fuck that therapist for telling her the house is "just a carcass" and him being the reason she goes there to "face it"

world of tinashe

exactly 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️ (also be careful this is hard enough sober 😭)

Alanda

The queen has posted! Lemme light this blunt up.

Jesus Garcia

I regret to inform you that this is only the beginning of the emotional torture. I have watched episode six and...

Alanda

This one shook me to my core BUT THE SIXTH ONE!!!!!!!!?????? That was one of the best episodes of TV I've seen in my entire lifetime. 😭

Alanda

I haven’t started it yet and as I super tight, virgin with this show…I have to say…some of these comments (and your title) are making me realllllll nervous over here 😬

Joe

I have 24 minutes of work left, then I will promptly be shutting off my laptop, grabbing a beverage and watching this reaction unfold. I cannot wait 😊

Brian Bolin

Truly had me gagged when I first saw this 😭

Ailish

Quick! Turn off the lights! Our favorite show is on!

Joe

Yaaas the queen has made her entrance

The Cinema With James

*One* of the moments we’ve all been waiting for… 👀😭

Dylan Krolicki

Okay. This is the one. I knew watching this episode it is one of the best shows I have ever seen. This one is so sad and tragic but that ending twist is genius. One of the best twists I have ever seen.

Dominik

This is the one I’ve been waiting for. Devastating isn’t even the word

Destiny 🩵

I HAVE BEEN IN NEED OF THIS!!! I AM READY TO BE DEVASTATED!!!!

Pierre Brown

yeah…yeahhhhhhhh🫩, Flanagans pen was unfortunately on fire

E.

I’ve been waiting for this one!!
