Note from JM:

FYI for Modern Times:

The best version is available on the Criterion Channel (you can sign up for a free 7-day trial)

https://www.criterionchannel.com/checkout/subscribe/purchase

For US viewers, Modern Times is also available for free with an Amazon Prime subscription. But the video is not quite as sharp as the CC version, and the audio sounds slightly muddled. It's still a very good version (has the original score; some Chaplin features on Amazon have a bastardized, boring piano score)

Canadian members can also sign up for a free 7-day trial at Criterion Channel. It's also available on Apple TV CA, but I don't have Apple TV so I can't say how good the quality is.

Actually I found a really good version of MT on YT. It's the Criterion version. Video is slightly less crisp than CC, but the audio is very clear. (The sound is surprisingly important for this "silent" film.)

YT channel name is "MasterMarketing"

Make sure to increase resolution to 720p in setting

Also, opening YT in Firefox (instead of Chrome) lets you use picture-in-picture mode to resize the screen to your preference (if you're watching on a computer)

Hope this helps!

I liked your intro. Because 1936, I wasn't expecting silent film (or for-the-most-part silent film), but then read was the last great silent film. While I have liked some physical comedy over the years (e.g., on SNL, etc.), I am typically not big on silent or physical humor, but impossible to deny that this is a comedic masterpiece. Incredible orchestrated physical movements. Incredible acting. Plus, for me, a fun way to capture history of the time. I had forgotten that the depression lasted till 1941 in US, which I guess makes sense b/c that is when US mobilization/industrial production for WWII really got going. So 1936 was in the middle of The Great Depression. His female companion is good actor and pretty. As you may know (and most commenting here surely know), I read that they married irl, and then she later married Burgess Meredith (Rocky's trainer). I enjoyed your animated reaction.
