It wasn't just the last third of the movie that Kubrick couldn't stand. In the book Jack was a loving, genuine family man. The dislocation of Danny's shoulder WAS a genuine accident, but he always felt guilt over the incident that it set up the events that followed. The point of the book was the descent of Jack into madness while his son was able to watch and track this happening because of his telepathic powers. Kubrick felt the movie made a better ghost story so filmed it that way.

Haha, funny intro on YT! You should give people "the Tony" when they annoy you IRL There are tons of interpretations of this film (including some loony ones about Kubrick's faking of the moon landing). The one I like best is that it's an allegory about the foundation of the United States (often referred to by Americans throughout history as a "city upon a hill"). The hotel manager, Mr. Ullman, says that the hotel was built on an "old Indian burial ground" and that the building crew had to repel attacks by Native Americans (from what I understand, these details were not in the book and were added by Kubrick). I think the blood symbolizes the atrocities (slavery, killing of native peoples) that were part of the establishment of the US, and the "shining" of Danny (the next generation) and Dick are their insights into the country's traumatic past. (Wendy doesn't see visions until she discovers Dick's corpse.) Interestingly, the photo at the end shows that it's a July 4th party -- American Independence Day. Anyway, The Shining might be the most overanalyzed film in history, so there are plenty of other ways to think about it.
