This film was nothing like I expected! It’s such a fascinating watch that I’m still processing it. One thing that truly stood out was the editing—it was so well done, I can easily see how it might have influenced other filmmakers. I shared more of my thoughts in the outro!
Thanks for watching with me!!!! I hope you enjoy it!!

Ames, thanks for taking on this terrific, challenging film. I wrote in another comment about my favorite shot - it's at 36:21 of the film proper (from the start of the Paramount logo) when John first sees a glimpse of the mysterious red-hooded character scurrying away. We think the view is from John's vantage point, but the zoom at the end belies that it's not a POV shot. It's as if the camera itself isn't sure where it needs to look, at the last second catches sight of the red-clad figure, and then desperately tries to focus in. My reaction has always been that at this moment, not only does the audience not know where things are going, the FILM ITSELF doesn't know either. Goosebumps for me every time.
The color red, mirrors, broken glass and ceramics, ubiquitous water - these and other motifs appear so frequently one can spend whole viewings trying to notice everything and piece together meaning from them (like John examining the mosaic). I noticed several new things myself during the watch-along, and I will mention three of them while trying not to give too much away - viewers might want to look out for them on their next viewing (or have already seen for themselves):
• When we first see Heather (the blind sister) in the restaurant, she is wearing an outfit in a distinctive color (not red). See if you can find this color somewhere else in the film and decide if it has any significance.
• There is frequent emphasis on eyes, sight, and seeing (and seeing but not recognizing what is seen). Check out one of the signs that John and Laura stop under on one of their walks through the city.
• See if you can make out what is depicted on the brooch that Wendy (the sighted sister) wears.
Thanks again.

Nothing like a good foreign thriller to frustrate, creep you out, and up your anxiety.
