Road to Perdition (2002) watch along

Poll winner is up! Thanks for all your votes!!!

Wow, what a perfect title for this film. I watched it last night, and it’s still sitting heavy on my mind—in the best way. There’s so much to unpack, but the storytelling through cinematography stood out to me the most. Some favourite shots from a film!

This movie is ART.

I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t seen it yet, but if you have, let’s talk about it on Discord! You all know how much I love cinematography, and this film is a masterclass. The use of colour alone blew me away—I touched on it a bit in my outro. Sam Mendes is so intentional with his direction, and even though I had a couple of very minor nitpicks, they’re so small that I bet a rewatch would smooth them out completely.

Unlike anything I've seen from him before, Tom Hanks delivers such a quiet, contemplative performance here. Combined with the powerful score and amazing visuals, you’re completely immersed in this world. The noir vibes, the heavy emotional themes, and the care put into every frame really hit me harder than I expected.

The character design, set decoration, and colour work are stunning. It’s such an interesting perspective on father-son dynamics, family loyalty, and revenge. A deeply affecting film that lingers with you long after the credits roll.

Lots more in the outro of just pure after-movie feels!!!!

Really loved your reaction!!! Great perceptions, beyond my own thoughts on first watch.

Not sure if someone mentioned this in this comment section, but just wanted to let ya know, this movie was based on a graphic novel of the same name by Max Allen Collins.

Moe howard

LOL! He's still really good in Munich, though

This movie is so good and Daniel Craig did such a good job that it completely ruined the James Bond movies for me. 😂

Thomas Richter

Loved the reaction, always loved this movie. Needs Criterion treatment.

Brian's Dog

Great Reaction! As stated before, Tyler Hoechlin would go on to portray one of the best versions of Superman in the tv show Superman & Lois. Worth checking out for sure.

Good reaction, as usual. I don't mind the F-bombs the least bit. Comes across as natural, which is what we want. As you indicated, this movie can get to one at times. I like the exchange between father/son when they were at that house with his arm healing from being shot. My Dad was harder on me than on my 5 younger brothers (e.g., I was the only one he used the belt on), but he also involved me in more and trusted me with more responsibility at a younger age. Early in the movie in referring to Connor, you said "He is not to be trusted," I thought the same. We both soon found out that was so true -- and maybe even more than we could imagine. I was thinking Sullivan could have taken the $25,000 and brought Michael to Ireland -- but how could he? I like this movie. I tend to prefer happy endings in my old age, but the movie did have an introspective ending. I watched this movie maybe 20 years ago but don't really remember it. I vaguely remember not being blown away by the movie -- I think because I found casting Tom Hanks in that role as awkward. However, now I better appreciate how versatile an actor that Hanks is and I am now fine with him in any role. I am not a Bond connoisseur, but my two favorite Bonds are Sean Connery and Daniel Craig. I also like Daniel Craig in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2011) and "Munich" (2005). As for Tucci, I watched a couple of episodes of that food show "Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy" (2012-2022) -- I liked it. Paul Newman was old in this. I've watched "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969) and "The Sting" (1973), each a couple of times in the last 18 months or so, and each starring Paul Newman with Robert Redford who make a charismatic duo. Other Paul Newman movies I am up for are "The Hustler" (1961) and "Cool Hand Luke" (1967) (as you likely know, is AFI Top 100) -- I don't remember how much of those two movies I have seen before.

Everytime I see Paul Newman I think of The Simpsons joke where Homer accidentally destroys a farmer's field, and the farmer shouts, "OH NO, THE CORN! Paul Newman's gonna have my legs broke!" Paul Newman was known as kind and charitable man, the money from his food products go to charity, which makes the Simpsons bit so funny and ridiculous at the same time.

Wow! Glad Ames loved it! It won a poll so it clearly has its audience but, even under the liberalist interpretation of the genre, this movie's about as Noir as Dumbo.

You've got to get your eyeballs on Butch & Sundance and Cool Hand Luke and The Color of Money if all you know about Paul Newman is salad dressing. 😉 He and Robert Redford were matinee idols in their prime.
