Sophie's Choice (1982) watch along

#91 on the AFI List

Sophie's Choice was a brilliant film. It's hard to say that when something is so sad and difficult to watch at times. But the movie was poetry in motion. From the tones and colors of the film to the performances—which solidify in my mind why Meryl is the G.O.A.T.—the story was delicately woven like sweet, poignant nectar throughout. I was touched and moved in many deep and meaningful ways. The heartache one endures and carries, the sweet melody of friendship, and the horrors of war will be forever embedded in my soul after watching this incredible film.

Sophie's Choice (1982) watch along

Sophie's Choice has easily, one of my top ten favorite performances from anyone ever. This was only my third watch, but I actually like it better each time. I'm still blown away by the performances of everyone here, not just Meryl. It's the type of film I imagine when people use the word Drama. The surprise isn't there anymore on a rewatch, so it is easier for me to just immerse myself in her storytelling. I pay attention to every facial expression, every change in color from scene to scene, and I even enjoy the slow pacing more. It's a bit longer than it needs to be, but we are prepared for that going in. It still lingers afterwards. Usually, I only have that feeling on a first watch, but this is one that stays with you. It's always interesting to me how the same films will affect a different emotional response for each of us. We just had Platoon yesterday. I've seen that plenty, but shared it takes an extra effort kind of night to convince me to take that on again. Most of the time, it's a no from me. But then...I can watch this one over and over without getting too emotional, because of what I am pulling out of it. I may be more focused on the literary drama, or just highly aware this is adapted fiction, so I can tie it less to reality. At the same time, there are plenty of people who love Platoon, have no problem getting through it, but throw up an immediate wall with this one, saying they just can't/don't want to do it. I can one hundred percent respect that too. We all have our own experiences that get us to where we are, and sometimes we don't really know where those lines are drawn for us, until they are challenged. On that front, film may be the most effective (or at least one of the safest or healthiest) mediums for that level of self-discovery.

Agreed, after this, it was like DeNiro doing Raging Bull two years earlier. It upped everybody's game! Ironically, DeNiro and Streep (and Keitel!) did a movie together right after this, Falling In Love, about two people having an affair. Movie is ok but the two of them are at the top of their game, you really believe these two are in love. Anyways, about to watch this now!!!

This film CEMENTED Meryl as the GOAT. A title she never relinquished since. Great novel and an even better film adaptation. This was what? 15 years before Shindler's and for many people? Their first exposure to what it was like living in a concentration camp. Has there ever been an actress who can master an accent as well as Meryl? This movie really had everything. Love. Guilt, Loss. Envy. Jealousy. betrayal. sacrifice. devotion and also touched on mental illness.
