“E.T” (1982) Watch Along

🚨Spoilers Below🚨

This movie should be called “E.T The Emotional Rollercoaster”!!!! Nothing more devastating than seeing E.T laying half dead in a river next to a raccon!!!!

It’s soo crazy to have grown up hearing “E.T Phone Home” (but not a crazy amount) and playing Sharks in pools because of “Jaws” and I had never seen either! But that is the influence these movies have had on pop culture!! Steven Spielberg is truly one of the great film makers of our time ❤️

Again, amazed by the amazing work of the Puppeteers, the score by John Williams played on my heart strings, the shot compositions and cinematography was incredible! And that kid Henry Tomas deserved an Oscar! What happened to him? I hope he’s had a great career and not destroyed by being a kid actor! He was SO BELIEVABLE they all were amazing! Spielberg def knows how to pull a performance outta ppl, especially kids!

Bring your tissues! Never thought I would cry so much for a puppet! And I don’t even care how he fits into the milk crate!!! I loved those bike/car chases!!!!

Let me know your thoughts on E.T! Another one checked off the AFI list ✔️

Thanks for being here for my Bday Movie Month! And this week was oh so magical! You guys keep the dream alive and I thank my lucky stars everyday to have the best crew ever!

❤️✨❤️✨

What more can be said about the puppeteering and Henry Thomas' performance? But to me the family drama aspect is just as compelling. The mother is trying her best to suppress her feelings about the separation while her nerves are frazzled from dealing with some mini-emergency every hour. But she clearly adores her children and is delighted by their antics (think of her muffled laugh after “penis-breath”). The writers could have made the older brother a douchebag, but you can tell that he really cares about his siblings (and as the oldest child with the longest history with the father, he empathizes the most with his mother’s situation). But I think Gertie is the hidden MVP. Drew Barrymore’s performance could easily have been the weak link, but instead it’s what elevates this film to the status of a true classic. Apart from the two bicycle scenes, my favorite part is when Gertie is reading off of the TV. Many child actors could have fallen into the trap of being either too cute or smug, but Gertie just nails it. She’s not reading to impress an adult, she’s doing it simply for her own sake to reinforce her knowledge (like she’s “in the zone” or a “flow” state). As we’re watching, we’re so proud of her because we can see her taking a big step towards becoming an independent member of society. The genius of the scene is when Gertie hears E.T. say “Beeee”. Our pride in Gertie is mirrored by Gertie’s pride in E.T., but Gertie’s feelings are much more intense because E.T.’s breakthrough is so unexpected. We can see the excitement in her face as she sees that, by speaking and reading, E.T. is also on his way to becoming a regular member of her family and the community (which makes her having to say good-bye at the end that much sadder). Great choice for your birthday film! (And the best antidote to wipe away the disaster of The Room! 🤣🤣)

Really enjoyed re-watching this after many years. Spielberg says that cinematography shouldn't draw the audience out of a film, but I couldn’t help but notice how patient the camera was with so many beautiful, lengthy shots (like the backyard in the moonlight). I can't recall another blockbuster with such peaceful editing; I think a faster pace would ruin the immersion.

P.S. I actually was in Montreal one Halloween......my impression was you guys do Halloween WAY cooler! Incredible home-made costumes! I remember I saw a kid dressed as Charlie Chaplin! Maybe it's just Montreal, but that's been my line ever since to people: Canada does Halloween cooler. (Buffalo does a wild Halloween also....and they're ALMOST Canada. Maybe it's a northern thing?😂)

"I need a red hoodie immediately" 😂 "Can you make it up the ramp, E.T.?" You cracked me up 10,000 times during this reaction, often during crying parts. That was such a fantastic reaction. Definitely edit that one down! So happy you got to see Drew! When I think of Drew Barrymore....that's what I think of! No matter how old she gets, she's always going to be Gertie to me! I can't talk about my personal experience with this movie without talking about two other movies you haven't seen yet, Close Encounters and Poltergeist, so I'll just leave it as: FANTASTIC reaction! You're bawling about E.T. face down in a ravine...and still managing to crack a joke about him being on a bender!!!! That's like a magic trick!
