SPOILERS AHEAD!! I am always amazed by the ability of certain films to make you care about the characters, even highly-flawed characters that are not in themselves, very relatable or likable. The film introduces us to an assortment of decidedly-odd family members, each with their own peculiar foibles and eccentricities. I found the narration made it quite difficult to connect to any of the characters. Tim is painfully shy and lacks confidence. Kit Kat is a perennial flower child who is constantly making poor choices about her life, her job, and men. Uncle Desmond is in his own happy disconnected world. Tim's dad seems like a peculiar character, always buried in a book or narrating an epic ping-pong battle. Tim's mom seems generally irritated by life. If you add in an extremely implausible supernatural premise complete with an abundance of gimmicky, contrived situations, the film doesn't look very promising. However, if you survive the first two-thirds of the film, willfully suspending disbelief a dozen times and tolerating the many cringe moments, you'll finally, and surprisingly, get to the good stuff. By the third act, everything has changed and the emotional impact really hits home. Tim has found true love and Mary is obviously the right girl for him. Tim's dad shows his true wisdom and the father-son bond is strong and touching. Uncle Desmond is the sweetest person alive, ... and Kit Kat! By the end of the film, I was astounded to realize, I don’t want to live in a world where Kit Kat is unhappy. This evolution of the characters (or perhaps the evolution of viewer's perception of the characters), is amazing and so skillfully done. While I think the overall message of the film is a good one, what makes this film special to me is the perfect moments that are created by just the right words, said in just the right way, at just the right time. A few of those moments just crushed me, 😢 including Uncle Desmond, when he says, Uncle D : Your father, I think, is not so well. Cancer. Tim : Yes. Uncle D : I'm very unhappy about it, Tim. At your wedding he said he loved me. Tim : He does. I know. Uncle D : That was the best day of my life. So this is probably the worst. And Kit Kat when she says, "Maybe, just maybe, I'm the faller. Every family has someone who falls, who doesn't make the grade, who stumbles, who life trips up. Maybe I'm our faller." That just destroyed me. 😭 Of course, the whole father-son bond between Tim and his dad was very touching and personal. You mentioned how much you missed your grandparents, Ames. My own dad passed away several years ago and I can’t even begin to imagine how wonderful it would be to see him and spend time with him again. Priceless. So, while this movie is not everyone’s cup of tea (and perhaps many viewers never made it to the third act), I’m really glad you had a chance to see it Ames. You’ve got a good heart and a very sweet way of appreciating the special moments in a film and allowing them to touch you emotionally, without being overly critical of the rest. What a delightful experience it was for me to share that with you! You’re the best! ❤️ Christmas came early for me this year.

Well, that was AWESOME!! So many feelings and thought-provoking "what would I do?" moments in the film. To avoid spoilers, I'll save most of my comments for later, but it was a delight to watch this one with you Ames. Thank you for being so sweet and happy for me that my movie pick was chosen. What an unexpected surprise!! 😲 I guess the Wheel picks what the Wheel wants!!
