The Patriot (2000) Watch Along

Comments

This is a loose adaptation of historical events. But Jason Issac’s character was based off of a British officer named Tarleton. The battle at the end was based off of the Battle of Cowpens. Daniel Morgan, who was mentioned in the movie, was the commander of the colonial army. He defeated Tarleton there and the tactics were roughly the same as in the movie. Tactics of the day were linear because the smooth bore muskets they used at the time were not very accurate. Approx. 75 ft. They would line up in rows and volley fire. The front row would fire then move to the back and reload. The idea of a volley was that you would maximize your firepower. It was all they knew, and tactics in war are usually based on the previous war. The idea of linear warfare goes back to the days of spears and the phalanx formations that were pre gun powder. Smooth bore muskets were easier for armies to manufacture, operate and cheaper to build. Rifled muskets were also present among militia, and were far more accurate but generally took longer to reload. Muskets at the time were flint lock. Which means they had a flint stone that would spark the powder igniting the prepared shot. The flint spark would ignite a small amount of powder that was in a pan on the musket. The ignition would flash and create smoke near the face of the soldier firing. This is why you see them turn their heads when they shot. So they wouldn’t get burned by the flash of powder. This also reduced the accuracy.
