UaRoB: Chapter 48 — The Last Gasp of the Westerlands

Comments

Getting the reach on board is a sound idea, but he doesnt need the Tyrells exclusively for that. If the florents are siding with stannis whats to stop other bannermen from breaking away from the Tyrell hegemony? After all it was the Targs that gave highgarden to the roses in the first place whose to say they can't and won't do it again. That being said a marriage alliance is always a good choice yet him going straight to offering his own hand before giving up his cousins is wild. Willis and Garlan I believe are both free to marry and getting the next head of house as an in law is a better and safer option then crowinh margery queen.

She would have political power with an army at her back, it would benefit Jon having more men. But them being loyal to someone else... not so much.

Jajasx222

Barristan POV is in my list! We will see what happened to him all this time soon.

Jajasx222

Good analysis. We will see how it goes. It all depends on the tyrells right now.

Jajasx222

Those are two of their valid options, the problem is that Margeary us a few months pregnant already, and moon tea becomes dangerous. There is always the possibility of supporting the child's claim, he/she would be a true Barathron, and if the Reach sees the other contenders weaker they would have the strongest hand.

Jajasx222

With Margaery's pregnancy the Queen of Thorns is going to be very pragmatic. I can see possibly 2 choices either keep the pregnancy and see about getting in with Stannis through the child's blood connection, or get rid of the child to make way for Margaery to marry Jon or someone else. With Daenerys supposedly barren what Jon can do is marry both Daenerys and Margaery. It's been done before with Aegon having his sister brides and Maegor. Marry Daenerys to get the dragons and possibly trueborn Targeryens and Margaery to get the Reach and children.

It needs to be pointed out that moon tea is a thing and is actually more effective for abortion than it is for birth control. And this is the kind of world where you do hard things if they are necessary or in your best interest. For survival's sake. It’s more feasible to ally with a new king that has (nearly) 3 kingdoms in hand and put him on the throne, than it is to put a yet-to-be-born heir on the throne with 1 kingdom behind him (or her , it’s not like they’re guaranteed a boy, and if it’s a girl I doubt Westeros is letting that happen). I also doubt the entire Reach would be behind them if the Tyrell's tried to go for the crown themselves anyway. So Margaery is still an option in my book. She’s also the best option because A: Daenerys isn't here right now B: Even if Dany was here, her dragons are too small to make a difference, and would be in danger (which is why Gael is at the moat) C: Nearly 3 kingdoms + Reach = war is almost over Jon/Daemon needs solutions now, because the war is being fought now. Dany is a “future” solution, not a “now” solution. And I don't see blood purity as a good reason to marry her either. If Dany can have children, Jon's kids can marry her kids. Dragonseeds were able to bond to dragons. Having more cousins as marital options would probably be a good thing. Targaryen cousins don't have to be an issue. No one but the heir to the throne should be getting a dragon. There are no wild dragons so keeping track of the eggs should not be a problem. Vaults exist. Or if they need to be warmed in the volcano, get better security for dragonstone. This only becomes complicated is Danaerys makes herself a problem. She may be the mother of dragons but she is only the rider of one of them. The other 2 don't need to be in her possession. Also Jon is the Tyrell's best option. The Lannister's can threaten all they want but their gold is moving north as we speak and the South has never been able to make it North and never will. So Lannister's with a lacking army, no gold, and the death of Loras Tyrell on the hands doesn’t sound like an appealing proposal no matter how many positions they promise. And if the Tyrell’s do join Jon, there is absolutely no reason they would turn on him. Killing your king who’s giving you benefits is stupid. Nothing would be gained by that. Margaery is NOT Cersei, and Jon is NOT Robert. There is no reason they can't have a decent political marriage.

V83

Dang, they don't know that Maegaery is pregnant... Yet. Still I'm really hoping for a Barristan pov soon enough I want to know what's happening with Dany!!!

Simplexity

The western lands are spent, no extra levies or support is coming from that area. In fact considering the ironborn and rebellion threat it makes more sense to let part of the northern army stay and hold the land for the rest of the war and after. The Redwyne heirs should be in the red keep, so no support there. I agree that the Tyrell’s should want to join Jon most of all. The reach while having a large army don’t have great commanders excluding the marshes lords, who are busy now that Dorne is in in full rebellion. So the reach really doesn’t have a lot of strength to bargain. Under a good commander they are the strongest kingdom, but in reality they are useless.

So they’re unaware of the pregnancy cool cool. In terms of who they’re most likely to join and least likely to I’d say Themselves/Jon as #1 #2Aegon #3Joffrey #4 Stannis The reach can still fight and hold its own against any other kingdoms especially split as they are now. But if they remain on the defensive and allow the North to fully subjugate the west they can add the west to their army and replenish all the lost forces they’ve had I suppose Joining the winning side who can offer them a lot Is also more in their interest. Aegons force is weak and Stannis is now mortal enemy #1 so joining up with the guy who controls half the realm already would make kt an easy victory but they wouldn’t have a Queen on their side at all not unless they try to offer Desmera redwyne Both Joffrey and Aegon would have to make them give tons of positions of power in order to get the Tyrell’s on their side but I doubt they’d want the trouble considering Jon has done what no man since Lann the clever has done and captured the rock

Invictus

Loool that would be pretty funny to see but probably isn’t something that fits in line with the vision of the story

Invictus

Margaery's pregnancy might be an issue. Actually, a big one. If it wasn't for that, I would say she is a better option than Danereys given how mad and arrogant she is after a certain point..but that all depends on when Barristan can get to her. If it's before she claims an army of unsullied, then she's a good choice..after? Not so much.

SwiftFate

Amazing chapter! I can’t wait for House Clegane to burn. I don’t think Margaery would be a good wife for Jon, not with the Queen of Thorns scheming. Hopefully Jon dragon grows up fast so he can start riding. Euron Greyjoy is going to be a very big problem when he returns.

EM

Nice chapter. Hoped to see some more of Jon in the subjugation of the westerlands. Maybe going after deep den and sylverhill. To secure the eastern road into the heart of Westeros. Deep den should be secured for sure, any mines and strategic positioning the lannisters have into their own lands would be lost. I hope he doesn’t marry Margeary, the Tyrell’s don’t deserve anything boons after siding with the younger brother instead of the old one. I do see the strategic value of it though, swords and the unborn lord of storms end in his Daemons hands. I look forward to the division of the western’s lands at the end of the war. A Karstark in the Crag to have a sunrise and sunset family. Then you have six Blackwood sons for Ashermark or Kayce. An umber for crakehall. A Ryswell for Sylverhill. The last Glover for the golden tooth. You still have even more castles and lands left over. With lords mansions in lannisport for extra sons and daughters. Robb and Jon should each take one of the Lannister twins as a concubine. Keep that Stark tradition alive, kill the fathers, sons to the wall, steal the land, burn the keeps and marry the daughters. There could be enough Lannister daughters for Jon, Bran, Rickon and Robb. Give a few to the Karstarks too and you finish setting up the myth of Lannister folly for millennia. Looking forward to more.

Sweet chapter very interesting the way the candle come into play there might be more out there aswel as claiming the valerian steel sword blackfyre from the false dragon aegon and with his dragon growing it wont be long until he's ready!

Stuart Rees

Great chapter! Thanks so much for sharing!

Manderly would probably be the worst choice, as there could be tensions due to their exile. Long time ago but in this world old memories sit and scab on new skin.

Jace Hasher

The Lannister’s are getting absolutely destroyed in your AU. Cersei’s stupidity and Joffrey’s Psychopathy still started their fall, but Tywin’s brutality in the Riverlands comes back to bite him, as who wants to be allies with someone who rapes, pillages, and destroys nobility, even those that surrender (Poor Darry, I’m still sad about them since they’re such a cool house😢). Tyrell’s are definitely not going to side with him, Loras was their golden boy. Frey’s aren’t going to side with ANYONE definitively until a winner is clearly shown. Honestly, even the Vale is iffy, because even if they get Littlefinger to do his thing and kill Lysa, they more than likely aren’t going to be on board with the fact that they assassinated Robert AND Ned as they care about honor almost as much as the North.

GalacticTNT

You write The brother scenes extremely well. I don’t think sending glover south was the best idea manderly makes more sense, your story though and hopefully it won’t matter.
